The Arizona Mining Association (AMA) today announced the recipients of the  2015 Sustainability, Preservation and Diversity in the Environment (SPADE) award for environmental excellence. The award, which is AMA’s top recognition for exemplary achievement in environmental stewardship, recognizes individuals, businesses, organizations and agencies that have made a remarkable contribution to invest in creative ways to protect and preserve Arizona’s precious natural resources.  This year’s awardee is Resolution Copper.

“AMA member companies are leading through action, forging new alliances and developing innovative ways to help Arizona achieve a healthy environment and a robust economy,” said Kelly Shaw Norton, president, Arizona Mining Association. “We are honored to recognize the exceptional efforts of Resolution Copper employees, our 2015 SPADE Award winner, who have gone above and beyond to ensure that Arizona’s natural resources and beauty will be enjoyed today and by future generations.”

Resolution Copper is developing one of the largest copper deposits in the world in the area of the former Magma Copper mine near the town of Superior, 65 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona.  The company plans to operate a world-class mine while protecting the area’s unique natural surroundings and cultural heritage.  The Arizona hedgehog cactus (ACH; Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. arizonicus) occurs in the vicinity of the project and is listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.  Resolution Copper has been proactive in developing and carrying out measures to conserve and protect this unique cactus, working with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, to develop and implement mitigation and conservation measures.  Resolution copper has also teamed up with scientists to expand the known range and distribution of the species and determine the most efficient methods for propagation.  Finally, Resolution Copper has collaborated with Boyce Thompson Arboretum and a local youth group to sustainably propagate and relocate AHC conservation efforts.

“On behalf of Resolution Copper, it is my privilege to accept the Arizona Mining Association’s SPADE Award,” said Andrew Taplin, president Resolution Copper.”  “We are honored to join with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and the young people of our area, to help protect this important resource.  The partnership between business, government and community is a shared value for Resolution Copper. ”
