One local company is making tech classes for kids more cost-effective for area schools. Future Kiddie, a technology curriculum provider based in Chandler that teaches computer skills to kids 3-7 at 20 Valley locations, is now making their innovative programs available to schools in Scottsdale.

Founded in 2011 by Ken and Linda Chan, the Future Kiddie program brings laptops and instructors to schools to eliminate the need for hiring computer teachers and buying and storing expensive equipment.

According to Ken Chan, “Our programs make it easier for schools to offer technology classes to young students.  We bring in the equipment for each class and then remove it when the class is over.  It made sense for us to expand into Scottsdale as it’s a very progressive and forward-thinking community.”

Class rates are negotiated on a per student basis with each school.  Interested schools can also arrange an onsite demonstration of the program.

FutureKiddie classes use laptops designed for small hands and software backed by a curriculum designed to teach younger students basic skills, including how to use a mouse and navigate a computer, and advanced concepts involving S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Special bands are also used to teach kids how to type and use the keyboard.

“The software uses word games and stories to teach children in a way that is fun and that they can easily comprehend. Computers are also integrated as a tool – not taught in isolation. This results in a genuine understanding of technology. Students also learn to use computers properly and to respect technology as a tool they will use throughout their lives,” says Ken Chan.

The classes are currently taught to approximately 200 children at schools in Gilbert, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Chandler and Mesa.  Schools can offer the classes to students one day per week or bi-weekly.

The program has been well received by schools currently participating in the program.

According to Van Phan, owner of the Goddard School on Higley Road in Gilbert, “Ken and Linda come to our school every week to conduct classes. After 3 years, the program remains a major hit at our school. “

She adds that, “The students look forward to their sessions and the real results – our student’s knowledge – is obvious. They go on to kindergarten already having mastered how to use a computer.”

The Chans also own and operate The Mighty PC, a company which provides high-quality refurbished computers to businesses and schools nationwide.
