San Francisco-based Turo opened up Scottsdale offices in early April, as part of its recent expansion efforts, according to a spokesman.
Turo, formerly called RelayRides, has 12 employees in its Scottsdale offices, currently, with plans to add more in the near future, said Steve Webb, head of community at Turo. Between its San Francisco offices, and employees working in Boston, where the company was founded, Turo has 120 employees, Webb said.
“We’re really (in Scottsdale) to take advantage of the talent that is available to us in the Phoenix area,” Webb said. “So far our small and growing team has been a huge help in helping us with the company, and the team there as been invaluable so we’re going to double down on that.”
The rental car service was founded by a Harvard Business School student in 2009, and lets folks request a car, or put their own car up for rent. It has hubs at airports, and in 300 cities including services in three Canadian provinces, Webb said.
The service puts the billions of cars out there to use, he said, when they typically sit around from time to time. People can rent a car for at least a day, and up to a year, he added. The marketplace is especially useful if you need a different type of car than what you already own, Webb explained.
The new offices here in Arizona consist of claims specialists, and sales folks, Webb said. This is the first office expansion for the firm outside of its San Francisco headquarters, and initial move from Boston to San Francisco after it was founded.
