Architect, author and artist Douglas Sydnor, FAIA, reactivated his Scottsdale-based architectural firm douglas sydnor architect + associates inc. (DSAA) after having recently left the Phoenix offices of Gensler as a senior architect and client relationship leader.
As the principal and owner of DSAA, Sydnor will be responsible for client-centric services, business metrics, leading project design teams, delivering design excellence, quality control of all service phases and strategic business development.
Sydnor founded his firm in 1993 and was active for twenty years working municipal, higher education, transportation, commercial and residential commissions. He closed his firm in 2013 to join Gensler.
The reactivated firm will provide architectural services, needs assessment, master planning, urban design, graphics and environmental signage. Sydnor’s firm will also offer existing building analysis, yield studies, entitlements and community involvement.
Sydnor plans to focus the firm on cultural facility projects, commercial and custom residential projects, ranging from ground-up projects to renovations and additions to existing structures.
Adaptive reuse of the existing empty building inventory in the valley will be a high priority for Sydnor’s firm. Sydnor said his firm is committed to health and wellness, evidence-based design, energy-efficiency, being environmentally sound, contextually appropriate and integrating public art.
Sydnor completed approximately 225 projects during his 35-year career exclusively in Arizona. During his career, Sydnor received over 60 professional design awards including awards from the American Institute of Architects, AZRE Magazine RED Awards, IIDA, Scottsdale Environmental Design Award, Valley Forward Association, American Library Association, Southwest Contractor Magazine, Arizona Masonry Guild, Arizona Homes of the Year and more.
Sydnor will continue to work with the Rio Salado Architectural Foundation, Central Arizona Architectural Foundation, Literacy Interactives LLC, American Institute of Architects Arizona Fellows and Scottsdale Heritage Committee for the Scottsdale Public Libraries.
He will continue to work on his quarterly ‘Architect’s Perspective’ Column for Arizona Contractor + Community Magazine. His other interests are lecturing, writing articles, desert gardening, reading, painting, drawing, museums, galleries, film, hiking, biking and traveling.
