A Glimpse of Recovery
It’s all about perception, and the words you choose to describe your point-of-view. The best phrase I’ve heard so far this year was captured in a book title: “Bulls Don’t Blush, Bears Don’t Die,” by Scottsdale-resident Dr. Barry Asmus. The book itself explores the limitless opportunities emerging from a borderless and knowledge-driven society, as well as international economic and political trends that are shaping business. Nowadays it’s all about the global economy.
The senior economist for the National Center for Policy Analysis has been named by USA Today as one of the five most requested speakers in the United States – and after hearing him speak at NAIOP’s second annual Casino Night 2009, it’s easy to see how this man got that reputation.
At the humble benefit for the Foundation for Blind Children, Dr. Asmus sailed through his speech with an easygoing attitude and direct captivation of the audience with one word – economy. He went over the history of the U.S. economy, the current recession and strategies for recovery. There was something for everyone, regardless of his or her market specialty or background. And I’m happy to say I wasn’t the only one taking heavy notes…
Did you know that in the beginning humans went through 10,000 years with no economic growth?! Freedom and prosperity are necessary for growth, however, Dr. Asmus points out that, “poverty is the natural condition of man.” It’s in poverty that we realize how blessed we truly are, gain humility and delight in the smaller things in life. Smaller things like the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln. At only 272 words, a total of 10 sentences and taking only three minutes to deliver – that speech captured the Civil War’s devastating impact and still holds power to this day.
What about recessions? I know you’ve heard this comment before, but recessions come and they go. There have been as many as 47 recessions in the United States since 1790 – and we the people have survived each and every one of them. The Great Depression and the Great Recession – we will conquer this one just as we have in the past. It’s all about how we conquer it that makes the difference.
Dr. Asmus’ advice to recovery? “The surest route to recovery is to encourage creativity and to allow people to keep the money they make.” It’s all about freedom and free markets – harnessing the power of incentive to produce prosperity, and keeping the fruits of our labor.
