Although Giving Tuesday, a day in which people from around the country were asked to donate to the charity of their choice in the spirit of giving back, has passed, that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to give back. And this Saturday, you’ll have your chance.

In honor of World AIDS Day on Saturday, December 1, Sprinkles Cupcakes will donate 100 percent of its proceeds from sales of its famous red velvet cupcakes, specially decorated with red ribbons, to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is an organization with a mission to prevent pediatric HIV infection and to eradicate pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy and prevention and treatment programs. Elizabeth Glaser and her two friends, Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis, founded the foundation after the death of Glaser’s daughter from AIDS. Unbeknownst to Glaser, she passed the virus onto her daughter Ariel through breast-feeding and to her second child, son Jake, who contracted the virus in utero. While trying to treat Ariel for her illness, Glaser realized that doctors had no clear idea on how to treat the child because most drugs on the market for HIV treatment at the time was aimed at only adults, and no HIV drugs had yet been tested and approved for children. When Ariel lost her battle with AIDS in 1988, Glaser feared her son was also in danger. It was then that she decided to set up a foundation to raise awareness and money for pediatric HIV research.

Glaser lost her battle with AIDS in 1994, however, her legacy lives through Jake, Glaser’s two friends and the millions of women and children around the world who have been helped by her foundation.

Since Sprinkles partnered with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in 2010, the company has raised $11,000 toward the cause. This Saturday, show your support for women and children everywhere by simply indulging in your favorite dessert treat.
