The sun is shining and weather is beautiful; time to get outside and enjoy it! But wait… Before you walk out that door, be sure to protect your skin from the harmful rays. Although most people relate the warmth and sun to sunscreen, sunscreen should be applied every day, and not just if you are going to be outside!
UVB rays cannot penetrate glass windows, but UVA rays can, leaving you prone to these damaging effects if unprotected. Even on a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds, while sand reflects 25 percent of the sun’s rays and snow reflects 80 percent of the sun’s rays.
Sun protection is the principal means of preventing skin cancer and premature skin aging, so take it seriously and follow these guidelines for protected fun in the sun!
What to look for
Sunscreens can be applied under makeup, or alternatively, there are many cosmetic products available that contain sunscreens for daily use, so that you can stay protected and beautiful. Look for a physical sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
How much to apply
One ounce, enough to fill a shot glass, is considered the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body properly. Sunscreens should be applied liberally to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors, and should be reapplied at least every two hours or after swimming or perspiring heavily.
Even so-called “water-resistant” sunscreens may lose their effectiveness after 45 minutes in the water. And don’t forget that lips get sunburned too, so apply a lip balm that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
