Waste Management Honored for Ethics

Waste Management, a leading environmental solutions for North America, has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, an independent center of research promoting best practices in corporate ethics and governance, as a 2014 World’s Most Ethical Company®.

This is the seventh time that Waste Management has been honored with this award, which recognizes organizations that continue to raise the bar on ethical leadership and corporate behavior. World’s Most Ethical Company honorees understand the correlation between ethics, reputation and daily interactions with their brand and that the award belongs as much to their associates as it does to them. Waste Management is one of only two companies in the Environmental Services industry honored this year.

“This recognition reflects our most fundamental commitment to keeping the environment—and our people and our neighbors—safe,” said David Steiner, chief executive officer and president of Waste Management. “As an industry leader, we continue to develop strategies to extract value from waste stream to minimize our environmental impact, while at the same time demonstrating a culture where safety and ethics are core beliefs.”

“The entire community of World’s Most Ethical Companies believe that customers, employees, investors and regulators place a high premium on trust and that ethics and good governance are key in earning it,” said Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. “Waste Management joins an exclusive community committed to driving performance through leading business practices. We congratulate everyone at Waste Management for this extraordinary achievement.”

The World’s Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient™ framework. The Ethics Quotient framework has been developed over years of effort to provide a means to assess an organization’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The Ethics Quotient framework and methodology was determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere’s network of thought leaders and from the World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel.

Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (25%), reputation, leadership and innovation (20%), governance (10%), corporate citizenship and responsibility (25%) and culture of ethics (20%).

“Waste Management is proud of this designation which recognizes our company’s efforts in transforming the waste industry to focus on environmental solutions,” said Scott Bradley, Four Corners Area vice president of Waste Management. “We are proud of our employees who help strengthen our reputation as an industry leader.”

Williams named 2014 BTI Client Service All-Star

A shareholder at the international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP’s Phoenix office has been recognized for his commitment to client service in the BTI Client Service All-Stars 2014 report.

Greenberg Traurig Phoenix shareholder Quinn Williams has represented public and private corporations, entrepreneurs and investment funds for more than 20 years.

“Greenberg Traurig is proud of Quinn’s well-deserved recognition as a ‘client all-star,’” said Phoenix Co-Managing Shareholder John Cummerford. “His commitment to delivering the highest level of client service has been recognized and appreciated by many throughout his outstanding legal career.”

In addition to Williams, Greenberg Traurig shareholders Ernest LaMont Greer and Donald Stein are also listed as BTI Client Service All-Stars:

· Greer is a Vice President of the firm and Co-Managing Shareholder of the Atlanta office. His practice consists of the representation of clients in various complex litigation matters.
· Stein, a Washington D.C. Shareholder, represents clients involved in federal regulatory issues, specifically U.S. Customs law and trade policy.

“Quality legal counsel and client service is at the core of who we are as a firm. We congratulate Ernest, Don and Quinn on their inclusion in BTI’s elite group of Service All-Stars,” said Richard A. Rosenbaum, Greenberg Traurig’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are honored to have Greenberg Traurig attorneys recognized for their diligence in embracing and recognizing client needs and achieving their goals as trusted partners and advisors.”

According to BTI, attorneys cannot lobby to be added to the list, self-submit nominations or provide corporate counsel names to be interviewed. The only way to become a BTI Client Service All-Star is for corporate counsel to single out an attorney for a client service performance exceeding all others. BTI conducted more than 300 individual interviews with corporate counsel at Fortune 1000 and large organizations to complete this report. The report lists 330 attorneys from 187 firms.

Steptoe’s Bienstock a ‘Lawyer of the Year’

Steptoe & Johnson LLP partner Floyd Bienstock, based in the firm’s Phoenix office, has been named the 2014 “Phoenix Insurance Law Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers.  The designation is in conjunction with the launch of the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® (Copyright 2013 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, SC).  Best Lawyers is based on a peer-review survey in which nearly 50,000 attorneys cast almost five million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas.

Best Lawyers began designating “Lawyers of the Year” in the US in high-profile legal practice areas in conjunction with its 15th edition in 2009.  Only a single lawyer in each practice area and designated metropolitan area is being honored as the “Lawyer of the Year.”  The lawyers being named as “Lawyers of the Year” have received particularly high ratings in this year’s survey by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity.

At Steptoe, Mr. Bienstock leads the Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith group.  He is an experienced trial attorney with a practice focusing on litigation insurance coverage and bad faith matters, including class actions, as well as complex commercial litigation matters in state and federal courts in Arizona and throughout the United States.

Runoff Election, Early Voting Phoenix Mayor, Council

Andrew Thomas will run for governor

Former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas says he’s planning to run for Arizona governor in 2014.

Thomas served as county attorney from 2005 until he resigned in 2010 to unsuccessfully run for Arizona attorney general.

A three-member disciplinary panel of the Arizona courts disbarred Thomas about a year ago for failed corruption investigations that he and county Sheriff Joe Arpaio launched against officials with whom they were having political and legal disputes.

Thomas is a Republican and he joins a growing list of candidates for governor.

Democrat and former Arizona Board of Regents Chairman Fred DuVal, Republican and ex-Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and Americans Elect party candidate John Mealer have already formally filed to run.

Republicans Sen. Al Melvin and Secretary of State Ken Bennett have formed exploratory committees.

Clean Elections limits raised for 2014

Arizona’s Secretary of State is adjusting funding limits available to candidates using Clean Elections money to run their campaigns.

Ken Bennett’s office says the upward adjustments will be in place for the 2014 election cycle. Participants qualify for public funding by gathering $5 contributions from eligible voters and agreeing to comply with spending and contribution limits.

Candidates for governor will be awarded $754,000 for the primary and $1.13 million for the general election. Secretary of State and Attorney General candidates can spend $195,000 in the primary and $293,000 in the general election. Candidates for Legislature get $15,000 for their primary races and $23,000 for the general election.

The money comes from the Citizens Clean Elections Commission created by voters in 1998. It collects money from court surcharges and tax checkoffs.
