W. P. Carey School Announces Hall of Fame Members

Two technology mavens and a prominent professor focused on improving our health care will be honored for their accomplishments this month. The three alums will be inducted into the W. P. Carey School of Business Homecoming Hall of Fame at Arizona State University on Oct. 30. Previous inductees come from such diverse organizations as the American Red Cross, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Motorola, Wells Fargo Bank and XM Satellite Radio.

“The new honorees have all blazed a trail in their respective fields, making a difference in their professions, their community and society as a whole,” says Amy Hillman, dean of the W. P. Carey School of Business. “They also set a great example for our current students that there are no limits on how far they can go in their own career paths.”

The 37th annual W. P. Carey School inductees are:

• Leonard Berry – Dr. Berry, a distinguished professor and well-known author, has devoted his career to studying the marketing and quality of services, with a recent focus on how to improve health care service. He has written 10 books and done extensive work with the Mayo Clinic. He is currently examining how to improve the service experience of cancer patients and their families. Berry has received countless major academic awards and is both a fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science and a past national president of the American Marketing Association. He is a member of several boards of directors, including for Lowe’s, Genesco and Nemours Children’s Health System. He is a Regents Professor, teaching at Texas A&M University, and he received his Ph.D. from ASU’s business school in 1968.

• Brian Gentile – Gentile’s impressive tech career spans almost 30 years and major global companies, including Apple, Sun Microsystems (now part of Oracle), and NCR Corporation. He is a leader in “big data” and cloud computing, who recently built and served as CEO of Jaspersoft Corporation. After TIBCO Software recently acquired the company, Gentile became senior vice president and general manager of its TIBCO Analytics products business unit. He has also been a public governor on the board of the Pacific Stock Exchange, a public member of a New York Stock Exchange committee on ethics and business conduct, and a founding board member for several Silicon Valley startups. He earned his MBA from ASU in 1992.

• Chuck Robel – Tech legend Robel served as chairman of the board of McAfee, one of the world’s best-known computer-security software companies, prior to its multibillion-dollar sale to Intel. He now serves on the boards of directors of GoDaddy, Jive Software, and several other public and private companies. He previously helped to manage about $1 billion in portfolio investments as chief operating officer at venture capital fund Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. He has been involved in more than 80 initial public offerings (IPOs) as an adviser, investor and board member. He received his bachelor’s in accounting from ASU’s business school in 1971.

Long-time Cox leader Rizley announces retirement

Cox Communications Senior Vice President and General Manager Steve Rizley will retire at the end of the year. During his 34-year career at Cox in Phoenix, Rizley motivated and galvanized those around him, and created unique relationships with his employees, customers and the Southwest community through his many years of service to area non-profits. Rizley announced his retirement to employees last month.

In announcing Rizley’s decision to retire, Paul Cronin, Sr. Vice President of Operations, Cox Communications said “It’s never easy to say good-bye to a friend and colleague, especially one that has been a part of the Cox Family and the cable industry for more than 30 years. As general manager, Steve worked tirelessly on his employees’ behalf each day, and made sure Arizona was at the forefront of new product launches for our customers, including brining the company’s first gigabit residential product offering to the Valley and the latest Internet speed increases to customers statewide.”

Rizley has long been a community advocate for organizations including the American Red Cross, Greater Phoenix Leadership, Arizona Historical Advisory Commission, and Cox Charities to name a few, and is a past-chair of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and campaign cabinet co-chair for the Banner/M.D. Anderson Cancer Center capital campaign. He has also received several prestigious business and industry awards and honors including the National Cable & Telecommunications Vanguard Award and the “Man of the Year” from the American Cancer Society, as well as the Cable Television Advertising Bureau’s President’s Award.

“Steve’s well-deserved reputation was built on much more than his professional excellence serving Cox’s Southwest Region. During his time as Chairman of our Board of Directors, he left his mark on our Chamber and the business community with strong, visionary servant leadership that has helped shape our organization and our state. We are all indebted to Steve for his dedication and service, and I, personally, am proud to call him my friend.” said Todd Sanders, president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of
Commerce.

The company said it plans to announce Rizley’s replacement in the coming weeks.

Universal Technical Institute Chairman White to Retire

After 37 years of service, John White is retiring this December as the Universal Technical Institute (UTI) executive chairman. White will continue to serve as a member of UTI’s board of directors. White retires as the most tenured employee in the company having played a critical role in the history and success of UTI, along with the advancement of technical education overall.

White began changing the world for thousands of future technicians when he acquired Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) in 1977; the school had just one building, a handful of students and two instructors.

In the early 1980s, White’s vision guided him to launching a first-of-its-kind training partnership with Harley-Davidson USA. This partnership set the stage for a successful strategy working closely with leading motorcycle manufacturers. Soon after Harley-Davidson, relationships with Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda were also formed, driving the creation and delivery of industry-driven education that best prepares technicians to enter the workforce.

Over the years, MMI became the premier brand and undisputed leader in technician training for the motorcycle and marine industries.  White’s visionary leadership and ability to see the value in partnering with some of the world’s leading manufacturers, as a way to help both students and employers, was revolutionary then and has continued to be the core of UTI’s brand and strategic positioning nearly 40 years later.

In 1997, when MMI and UTI merged, White assumed the role of chief strategic planning officer, in addition to serving on UTI’s Board as vice-chair and co-chair, before becoming executive chairman in 2005. During this time, with UTI’s merger completed, White began thinking of ways to build upon the successful strategy he had launched at MMI and how UTI could do the same with automotive and diesel OEM’s.

Today, it is no coincidence that UTI partners with more than 30 leading manufacturers with their newest partner being General Motors Co.

Before White announced his retirement plans, he made sure that the new partnership he spearheaded with GM became a reality, as UTI has formalized an agreement with GM to develop a 12-week elective training program for UTI students. The program will first be available at UTI’s Avondale campus.

With more than 30 industry-leading brands now associated with UTI, MMI and NASCAR Tech, White’s legacy will continue to positively influence the company and benefit thousands of students and employers across the country for many more years to come.

White has been a generous supporter of the UTI Foundation and a number of other charities, such as the American Red Cross and Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. He and his wife reside in Pinnacle Peak.

W. P. Carey School Honors Top Business Leaders

Three top business leaders will be honored for their innovation and achievements, when they are inducted into the W. P. Carey School of Business Homecoming Hall of Fame this month. They include the head of a famed jewelry company, a high-profile business founder from China, and a corporate leader at one of Arizona’s biggest companies.

On Oct. 17, they will join previous Arizona State University alumni inductees from such diverse organizations as the American Red Cross, Motorola, the U.S. Air Force, Wells Fargo Bank, XM Satellite Radio and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“These stellar inductees represent strength, leadership and accomplishment in the business world,” says W. P. Carey School of Business Dean Amy Hillman. “They demonstrate how far our students can go and have gone in making their mark on the global economy.”

The 36th annual W. P. Carey School honorees are:

> Eddie LeVian, chief executive officer of the Le Vian Corporation, who has made Chocolate Diamonds® a red-carpet staple in Hollywood. LeVian earned a business degree from the W. P. Carey School in 1979 and took his innovative marketing ideas back to his family’s fine jewelry business in New York. The company’s sales have more than quadrupled over the past decade, and the LeVian family is active with many charities, raising $75 million in the past decade alone.

> Canglong Liu, a high-profile business leader in China, who founded one fertilizer factory in 1979, which grew into a conglomerate of major companies, including the Sichuan Hongda Group, now with 30,000 employees and 60 subsidiaries around the world. Liu is chairman of businesses that focus on finance, minerals and real estate. He is also a member of the national committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the standing committee of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. The Hongda Group has given $8 million to AIDS prevention and research in China. Liu received his MBA from the W. P. Carey School’s prestigious executive MBA program in Shanghai in 2007.

> MaryAnn Miller, chief human resources officer and executive leader of corporate communications for Avnet, a Phoenix-based Fortune 500 company with more than 18,000 employees and customers in 80 countries. Avnet is one of the largest distributors of electronic components, computer products and embedded technology in the world. Miller has more than 30 years of experience in human resources and operations management, and is responsible for leading the company’s human resources, organizational development and corporate communications worldwide. She is also a member of the Avnet Executive Board. She received her MBA from the W. P. Carey School’s executive MBA program in 2001.

About 200 alumni, business leaders and students are expected to attend the Homecoming Hall of Fame event on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix. A reception starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony.

Wells Fargo Donates to Yarnell Wildfire Relief Efforts

Wells Fargo announced it has contributed $65,000 to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter for Disaster Relief funds and the 100 Club’s Survivor Fund in response to the Yarnell wildfire in Yavapai County.  Specifically, Wells Fargo will contribute $50,000 to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter for Disaster Relief and $15,000 to the 100 Club’s Survivor Fund for families of the fallen firefighters.

“The enormity of this loss is devastating, and we want to help our customers, friends and communities who have been so tragically affected by this fire,” said Pamela Conboy, Arizona Lead Regional President.  “We know our contribution will help fund the important work of the American Red Cross and the 100 Club in assisting victims of the fire. We truly appreciate their efforts.”

Wells Fargo customers can also donate to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter at 540 Wells Fargo ATMs in Arizona until July 22. Customers will not be charged a fee for using this service and 100 percent of the donations will be sent to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter.

Wells Fargo customers affected by the Yarnell wild fire in Yavapai County should contact their banker and visit their nearest Wells Fargo store to discuss financial options.  Customers who need assistance can call 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557) 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Customers can also visit their nearest Wells Fargo store once normal hours of operation resume.

D-backs Raise $57K For Tornado Victims

The Arizona Diamondbacks have raised $57,000 to help the victims of the tornadoes that hit Moore, Okla. and Oklahoma City.  The funds were raised via personal donations by D-backs players, an online auction with game-used and autographed items from D-backs players and a 50-50 raffle supported by D-backs wives.

The online auction was inspired by D-backs prospect Archie Bradley, a native of Muskogee, Okla. The online auction featured several personal items, including Jackie Robinson Day jerseys from 14 D-backs players, game-worn Los D-backs jerseys from Miguel Montero and Patrick Corbin, Kirk Gibson autographed bobblehead, autographed baseballs and bats and a team-signed D-backs jersey. Fans can still bid on three Paul Goldschmidt items, including game-used and autographed cleats, bat and batting glove at dbacks.com/auctions through June 6.

D-backs wives helped sell 50-50 Raffle tickets on May 25 that raised $11,605 through the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation. The funds raised from the online auction, personal player donations and the 50-50 Raffle will all be donated to the American Red Cross, United Way’s OK Strong Campaign and Moore, Okla. Public Schools to help rebuild the areas hit the hardest by the tornadoes.
