Valley Leadership announces Man & Woman of the Year

Valley Leadership announces Tom Ambrose and Ambassador Barbara Barrett as the organization’s 2012 Man & Woman of the Year. The pair will be honored for their distinguished service to the community at an awards luncheon in March.

Ambrose is well known in the greater Phoenix Metropolitan area as a community leader for nearly four decades. He joined the management team at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) as Executive Director in June, 2010.  Prior to that, Ambrose spent 37 years with the Phoenix Suns working in public relations, marketing, advertising and foundation management roles. For 17 years, he was the executive director of Phoenix Suns Charities.
Under his leadership, the Phoenix Suns Charities grew from a good idea in 1988, to a high impact community grant-maker by raising and distributing over nine millions dollars in grants and scholarships over the years

“Tom’s commitment to our community has impacted dozens of organizations across the Valley,” said Jerry Lewkowitz, co-chair of this year’s Selection Committee.  “The nonprofit landscape is filled with landmarks to his efforts.”

Barbara Barrett is President and CEO of Triple Creek Guest Ranch, perennially ranked among the top hotels in the world.  Until November 2012, she was also Interim President of Thunderbird School of Global Management, the world’s #1 school for international management.  Previously, she was Ambassador to Finland, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, CEO of the American Management Association, a Fellow teaching Leadership at Harvard and Chairman of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy.

“Starting with her participation in Valley Leadership Class I, Barbara has proven her commitment to our community over many years of leadership,” Sue Glawe, Selection Committee co-chair, said.   “Her list of accomplishments is a shining example for our community.”

Ambrose and Barrett join a prestigious list of past Man and Woman of the Year award recipients spanning 63 years.  U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater was honored as the inaugural Man of the Year and most recently Sue Glawe and Jerry Lewkowitz were recognized as the 2012 recipients.

The newest inductees will be formally recognized at a luncheon on March 21, 2013, at the Arizona Biltmore. For more information or to purchase seats or sponsorships, call the Valley Leadership office at (602) 952-6760.

Veolia, Subway partner to help those in need

Veolia Transportation, provider of quality bus service to the City of Phoenix, and Subway Restaurants of Arizona, are asking residents from across the Valley to join them in “stuffing a bus” for those in need this holiday season. On three consecutive Fridays, Veolia Transportation and the City of Phoenix will park a festive holiday-themed bus at one Subway location across the Valley, and are asking members of the community to come donate toys, clothing and other household items to benefit families and children in need this Winter.

To thank each member of our community for the donation, Subway will present each person who gives with a special coupon entitling him/her to buy any six-inch sandwich and get a second six-inch sandwich for free. In addition, Subway has teamed up with Otis Spunkmeyer and Shamrock Farms to offer all those who come out to support the events free cookies and milk.

The first of the three community events will take place at Subway Restaurant located at 4326 E. Cactus Road in Phoenix – just west of Tatum on Cactus – from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited to join in the festive giving opportunity.

“Members of our organization will also be on hand to graciously accept any type of cash donation, which will go directly to helping the many children in this community who need us this holiday season,” said Laura Capello of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona.

“Veolia Transportation has a long history of serving the Phoenix community. This Stuff A Bus project is a great way for us to support the community and to say thank you to community residents,” said Barrick Neill, of Veolia Transportation.

Lights, Water, Music: 3rd Sound Wave Music Festival

The 3rd Sound Wave music festival presented by Disco Donnie and Steve LeVine Entertainment & Public Relations (SLE) has been scheduled! This is Arizona’s first electronic dance music (EDM) festival, which debuted in 2011, held at a waterpark. Don’t miss this unique event taking place on Saturday, September 29 at Big Surf Waterpark at 4 p.m.

“Our goal was to be the first to bring electronic dance music fans in Arizona an experience they had never had before,” says Steve LeVine, SLE’s Chief Entertainment Officer, “and the third installment of this festival is promised to be bigger and better than ever!”

And this year, internationally acclaimed DJ Calvin Harris will be headlining the event. Harris has made waves in the EDM scene since 2007 and has worked with well-known artists, including LMFAO and Kylie Minogue. You may have even heard his tracks, “Feel So Close” and “We Found Love,” which features Rihanna, on the radio every now and then.

As the list of other internationally acclaimed DJs are being confirmed, this year’s event is anticipated to be the largest. In the past, Sound Wave hosted 20 international and national DJs, including Kaskade, Kraddy, Boys Noize, Diplo and Porter Robinson.

The Sound Wave music festival will also feature art exhibits, three stages that work within a functioning waterpark, bars, VIP sections and more. Those with VIP tickets will be granted access to two private water slides, a private bar, as well as a collectible VIP laminate. General public tickets are now on sale.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona.
