SRP recognizes Champions of Energy Efficiency

SRP honored seven innovative businesses and organizations for their energy-efficiency efforts and savings at the inaugural Champions of Energy Efficiency Awards event.

The awards are part of SRP’s efforts to encourage commercial customers to take advantage of the SRP Business Solutions programs to reduce energy use and save money.

“Utility costs can be one of the biggest expenditures for businesses, and SRP has made an effort to assist companies in reducing those costs,” said Dan Dreiling, SRP director of Market Research and Customer Programs. “The organizations we recognized today are to be commended for their efforts to implement new technologies, institute behavioral change and forge paths for energy efficiency.”

Through its Business Solutions programs, SRP partners with commercial customers to help them decrease their energy use, which defers the need for future energy generation, reduces emissions and helps control costs.

As a result of these efforts, last year SRP surpassed its energy-efficiency goals with commercial customers providing a combined annual energy savings of 195 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), which is equivalent to powering more than 10,000 homes for one year.

Helping local firms grow is the cornerstone of SRP’s economic development efforts. The utility’s award-winning customer service team helps local business owners by providing critical information about potential sites and money-saving rebates on energy-efficient upgrades and new construction.

SRP’s Sustainable Portfolio Principles, which guide decisions regarding energy-efficiency measures and the acquisition of renewable energy resources, have established a goal of meeting 20 percent of expected retail requirements with sustainable resources by the year 2020.

The award recipients, chosen from 14 finalists, are listed below. Profiles of all 14 finalists can be found at srpnet.com/awards.

Large Business – Fry’s Food and Drug: The retail food company took advantage of the SRP Business Solutions rebate programs to implement 50 projects in 30 metropolitan Phoenix stores, encompassing roughly 2.1 million square feet of store and administrative space. So far, Fry’s has realized 1.2 million kWh in energy savings per year and shaved peak demand by more than 140 kilowatts.

Midsize Business – Capri on Camelback, Greystar: The organization implemented a lighting retrofit in which every light bulb on the property was replaced with energy-efficient lighting resulting in annual energy savings of more than 600,000 kWh – enough to power more than 50 occupied apartments for an entire year.

Small Business – Temple Beth Sholom of the East Valley: A lighting-retrofit project reduced annual energy use by 47,000 kWh resulting in an overall annual savings of 50 percent.

Schools K-12 – Isaac School District: The district’s HVAC systems were upgraded saving nearly 500,000 kWh of energy use annually, which is enough energy to power one school for an entire year.

Colleges and Universities – Maricopa Community Colleges: The college district realized an annual savings of 1.1 million kWh (enough to power more than 60 homes for one year) through retrocommissioning and upgraded lighting projects.

Charitable and Nonprofit – St. Daniel the Prophet Roman Catholic Parish: The parish developed a new energy-saving strategy for the entire campus – replacing old outdated lighting with new lighting technology – resulting in a 46 percent savings in energy costs.

Outstanding Achievement – Banner Health: Cardon Children’s Medical Center implemented low-cost energy-efficiency measures that resulted in savings of more than 2 million kWh in the first year. Banner updated several buildings under the SRP Standard and Custom business solutions programs resulting in 1.5 million kWh of savings. The combined energy savings are equivalent to powering more than 190 homes for a year.

Ronald McDonald House Completes $2.1M Capital Campaign

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix has completed a two-year, $2.1 million fund-raising campaign to cover all construction, furnishing and decorating expenses for the Valley’s third Ronald McDonald House and the first in the East Valley.

Renovation has begun on the 12,600 square foot former health care facility on the campus of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa, which is expected to open in November. The 248-bed Cardon Children’s Medical Center is operated by Banner Health.

The new facility will feature 16 bedrooms, including 2 apartments with kitchens for families with children with suppressed immune systems; a community kitchen, living and dining room; play area for children and outdoor area for adults and children. When completed, and in combination with the other two Ronald McDonald Houses, up to 79 families will have a home-away-from home every night. The new House will provide 5,840 nights a year.

“We now know it’s possible to be relieved and thrilled at the same time,” said Executive Director Nancy Roach, who has been at the helm of the organization for 14 years and has overseen fundraising and construction of two of the three Ronald McDonald Houses in the Valley. “Being able to serve families in the East Valley has been a longtime goal of ours. The community fully understood that by helping to fund this project, they ensure that families traveling to Cardon Children’s Medical Center can stay close to their children.”

The original Ronald McDonald House is located at 501 E. Roanoke Ave. A second House opened in 2008 on the campus of Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

The $2.1 million was secured primarily through private donations from individuals, foundations, corporate supporters and Valley-based McDonald’s owner/operators, who have committed to provide up to $150,000 of required operating expenses for the first three years. The Ronald McDonald House does not receive direct funding from the McDonald’s Corporation, but is generously supported by McDonald’s restaurant owner/operators in Central and Northern Arizona.

Among the largest donors to the project are the Gila River Indian Community, The Kemper Marley Foundation, The Halle Family Foundation, SRP, The Thunderbirds, Ronald McDonald House Charities Global and other generous community donors.

Plans for opening celebrations are underway and details will be announced later this summer.

Chester Bennington to co-chair Stars of the Season

Banner Health Foundation, a philanthropic resource for nonprofit Banner Health, today announced that Chester Bennington, lead singer of the rock bands Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington, has signed on as co-chair of the 5th annual Stars of the Season fundraising soirée for Banner Children’s at Cardon Children’s Medical Center. The event, which will establish integrative cancer care at the medical center, will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Omni Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Montelucia in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

A longtime supporter of the hospital, Bennington will serve alongside his friend David Curran, MD, a pediatrician in the East Valley, immediate past chairman of the department of Pediatric Medicine at Cardon Children’s, and co-founder of Stars of the Season with his wife, Tina.

Bennington and Curran will be supported by event vice chairs Bruce Ektin, DDS, and Mike Fenlon. Stars of the Season advisory chair Tina Curran will work collaboratively with the four gentlemen, all of whom are active members of the Advisory Council of Cardon Children’s Medical Center, the planning committee behind the highly popular Stars of the Season event.

Bennington became involved with Cardon Children’s Medical Center shortly after it opened in late 2009, when his wife, Talinda, began serving as a volunteer. He made several trips to the hospital to support Talinda and visit with patients and families. When planning for the inaugural Stars of the Season began in 2010, the Benningtons immediately pledged their support. On tour and unable to perform at the event, Chester secured friend and fellow rocker Art Alexakis of the multi-platinum band Everclear as the event’s entertainer. Each year since, Chester has performed for guests of the sold-out affair alongside friends and famed musicians, including Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington in 2013.

Recognizing the incredibly generous gifts of time, talent and treasure the Benningtons have given to Cardon Children’s Medical Center and Stars of the Season, the Advisory Council named Chester and Talinda honorary chairs of the 5th annual Stars of the Season.

SRP Donates $50,000 Toward Ronald McDonald House

Salt River Project has approved a $50,000 donation toward construction of a new Ronald McDonald House on the campus of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa.  The new House will be the first in the East Valley and the third in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The new 12,600 square foot Ronald McDonald House will be located in a renovated former residential facility adjacent to the hospital.  The House will include 16 bedrooms, kitchen, common area, indoor dining room, two outdoor dining areas, work spaces and an outdoor play area.

The two operating Ronald McDonald Houses are located at 501 E. Roanoke Ave. and on the campus of Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

“For more than 100 years, water and power have been essential to SRP’s mission of building a strong Arizona. Equally important is our commitment to improving the communities where we work and live,” said SRP President David Rousseau.  “We are proud to support Banner’s Cardon Children’s Hospital, which provides the East Valley and Arizona with access to quality pediatric care, as well as the Ronald McDonald House Charities as it provides vital services and comfort to families in times of great stress and crisis.”

The joint fundraising effort between Ronald McDonald House Charities and Banner Health Foundation has so far raised $1.22 million toward the $2.1 million goal and is expected to be completed by the end of the fourth quarter this year.

“Salt River Project is an important partner for the Ronald McDonald House in our effort to serve the East Valley, and we are incredibly grateful for this generous contribution to help meet our fund-raising goal,” said RMHC Executive Director Nancy Roach.

In 2012, more than 1,850 families stayed at the two Ronald McDonald Houses in Phoenix, nearly 90 percent from Arizona but also from 23 states and 11 countries.  The average length of stay was 15 days.

The new House will be the first serving the East Valley.  Families staying at Ronald McDonald Houses must live outside a 30-mile radius from the nearest House.

No one is ever turned away for not being able to pay the $15 nightly fee asked of families whose children are undergoing medical care in the Valley.

The cost for housing a family for one night is $51.  In 2012, only 12% of families staying at a Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix were able to pay all or part of the fee.  Community donations and contributions help cover the difference between the daily cost and the fee the House asks for those who can afford to pay.

Banner Goldfield Medical Center will open on Friday

Banner Goldfield Medical Center (formerly Arizona Regional Medical Center) will open its doors for patient care at 7 a.m. on Friday, June 14.

The hospital has been temporarily closed for one month while Banner systems and practices were implemented. During that time, new technology and equipment was installed and hospital staff underwent training.

Banner Goldfield Medical Center, located on Ironwood and Southern roads in Apache Junction, Ariz., will provide state-of-the-art, patient-centered care to the communities of Apache Junction and Gold Canyon. The 30-bed hospital will offer an array of medical care, including: emergency services, intensive care, medical/surgical care, progressive care, surgery, imaging, pharmacy and lab.

Banner Goldfield is part of nonprofit Banner Health. Banner Health was recently recognized as a top health system in the nation by Truven Health Analytics. As a Banner Health facility, Banner Goldfield will uphold Banner’s standard of efficient and effective medical care.

The hospital will utilize electronic medical records to ensure the highest level of patient care management and recordkeeping. In addition, the highly skilled on-site care team will be paired with the latest medical technology to provide excellent patient care. Patients in the Intensive Care Unit will be monitored by the Banner iCare team, which provides 24-hour remote monitoring of patients by physicians and nurses via closed-circuit cameras and technology. Banner iCare staff will work hand-in-hand with physicians and nurses at Banner Goldfield to provide an added level of care for patients.

Banner Goldfield will work closely with Banner’s neighboring health facilities and specialty hospitals in the East Valley to meet the health care needs of each and every patient. Patients requiring advanced heart care will have access to Banner Heart Hospital, a center that consistently ranks among the top hospitals in the U.S. for heart care. Patients in need of pediatric care will have access to experts and an array of pediatric services at Cardon Children’s Medical Center. In addition, Banner Health offers specialized care to East Valley residents in the areas of cancer, high-risk obstetrics, orthopedics and weight loss on the campuses of Banner Baywood Medical Center, Banner Desert Medical Center, Banner Gateway Medical Center and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Narang named CEO of Banner Good Samaritan

Steve Narang, MD, chief medical officer at Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz., has been named chief executive officer at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, effective April 26. He will assume the role from current CEO Larry Volkmar, who will continue to serve as CEO until April 25.

Banner Health Arizona West Region President Kathy Bollinger said Dr. Narang will have the opportunity over the next several weeks to work closely with Volkmar to ensure a smooth hand-off of responsibilities. “The collaboration between these two Banner leaders will ensure a smooth transition,” she said.

Dr. Narang, a pediatric physician, has served as chief medical officer at Cardon Children’s since June 2011. Prior to coming to Banner Health, Dr. Narang served in a variety of medical director and teaching positions in Louisiana, including medical director of graduate medical education and medical director of pediatric emergency services at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“I’m looking forward to working with an outstanding team at Banner Good Samaritan,” said Dr. Narang. “We will work together to take its distinguished history of excellent clinical care, teaching and research and create a distinct value proposition around the delivery of high-value and innovative academic medicine in one of the country’s highest performing health systems.”

Bollinger said that Dr. Narang distinguished himself during the interview process as a visionary leader that is highly driven to deliver results. She said Dr. Narang’s impressive relationship-building strengths will be focused on engaging employees, physicians and the community around the excellence that is the foundation of Banner Good Samaritan’s 100-year legacy. “These strengths, combined with Steve’s background as a practicing physician, will be particularly effective in Steve’s engagement with the graduate medical education program,” she said.

Bollinger said it makes her especially proud that Dr. Narang’s selection reflects Banner’s commitment to internal opportunities for growth, development and promotion.
“In his experience as a physician, teacher, medical director and, most recently, as chief medical officer at Cardon Children’s Medical Center, Dr. Narang has amply demonstrated leadership attributes that are critical to Banner’s future as a leading health system in the nation,” she said. “The future is indeed very bright.”

Dr. Narang received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and completed his pediatrics residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He has a master’s degree in health care management from Harvard University in Boston.

Banner Health has recognized five outstanding employees with a Paul L. Singer Award, an award that honors those who not only make a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care, but through extraordinary volunteer work and community service.

Now in its 25th year, the Singer Awards honors Banner Health employees and their impressive community service activities. The 2012 award honorees were recognized Thursday at an event that honored the 54 employee award nominees and the five outstanding individuals who were selected to receive a Singer Award. The five winners received a certificate and trophy as well as a monetary donation toward a charity of their choosing.

The Singer Awards are named after the late Paul L. Singer, MD, a former chief of staff at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix who exemplified a commitment to community service. Banner encourages employees to take its nonprofit mission of making a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care beyond the hospital and into their communities.

Banner Health is one of the largest, nonprofit health care systems in the country. The system owns or manages 23 acute-care hospitals, long-term care centers, outpatient surgery centers and an array of other services including physician clinics and home care and hospice services. Ronald McDonald House opening at Cardon

The Valley of the Sun will be home to a third Ronald McDonald House, and the first in the East Valley, when a former health care facility on the campus of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa is converted into a 10,255 square foot home-away-from home

The 248-bed Cardon Children’s Medical Center is operated by Banner Health. When the $2.116 million renovation, funded primarily through donations, is complete in late 2013, Ronald McDonald House Charities will be able to accommodate up to 89 families a night at its three facilities.

The original House is located at 501 E. Roanoke Ave.  A second House opened in 2008 on the campus of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The new facility will feature 16 bedrooms, including 3 apartments with kitchens for families with children with suppressed immune systems; a community kitchen and dining room; play area for children and outdoor area for adults.

Fundraising for the new location is ongoing.  As of Nov. 1, nearly $967,000 has been raised to support the project, including a generous $500,000 gift from the Gila River Indian Community.

Banner Health Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities are working to raise the remaining $1.15 million necessary to complete the building conversion. McDonald’s owner/operators in the Valley have committed to provide up to 75 percent of required operating expenses for the first three years.

As a nonprofit health care system, Banner Health relies on philanthropy. Charitable contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations fund important services and initiatives, such as the Ronald McDonald House, and helps Banner deliver excellent patient care to more people in more places.

“There has been a tremendous need for a House in the East Valley for quite some time,” says Ronald McDonald House Executive Director Nancy Roach.  “The convenience of being located on the campus of Cardon Children’s Medical Center means that families won’t have to travel the 17 miles each way to the Roanoke House and can spend more time with their children.”

HKS Architects of Phoenix has designed the new house.  UEB Builders is the general contractor.   Historically, community and school groups and organizations, businesses and individuals have adopted and decorated individual rooms. Roach said that the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization will hire up to ten new employees to manage and maintain the new House.

“The Ronald McDonald House at Cardon Children’s Medical Center will be a home away from home for our families, providing a level of safety and comfort at an incredibly difficult time in their lives and relieving stress by being with other families facing similar challenges,” said Cardon Children’s Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Rhonda Anderson.  “The partnership between Ronald McDonald House and Cardon Children’s Medical Center will be vital in the healing process for the children and their families.”

A special ceremony at the site of the future House, and including a “blessing of the ground” by members of the Gila River Indian Community, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 on the Cardon Children’s Medical Center campus at Southern Ave. and Dobson Rd. in Mesa.  Additional events, including a Hard Hat tour and official ribbon cutting ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Stars Of The Season: Elite Fund-Raising Event For CCMC

It’s time to pack your bags, and take the trip of a lifetime to the third annual Stars of the Season event benefiting the Cardon Children’s Medical Center (CCMC), Banner Health and the Banner Health Foundation.

On Oct. 27, Scottsdale’s Montelucia Resort & Spa will host an unforgettable evening of cocktails, dinner and entertainment, including a silent auction, which will auction off tickets to NYC Fashion Week. Guests can also expect a performance from Chester Bennington of the band Linkin Park, which donated $25,000 to sponsor a table.

This year’s theme, 1001 Nights, will take attendees on a unique, Lebanese journey through music, entertainment and authentic food. The theme promises to invoke childhood memories with a strong cultural perspective.

All proceeds from the event will help support Cardon Children’s Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Program, which provides care for children born with congenital heart defects or who develop heart conditions early on in life.

But what makes this event even more unique is its dedicated group of volunteers and the teamwork and preparation by Micheline Etkin and Dr. Sophia Yang — two close friends with close ties to Brazil who are this year’s event co-chairs. A diverse advisory council of more than 30 people also assists the ladies in the planning process.

Etkin, a professional model, has always been passionate about children and became involved with the event through one of her old girlfriends, Tina Curran, the chair of the advisory council.

“We can all come together and make an incredible impact,” Etkin says. “It’s so nice to be a part of something so open-minded.” Etkin adds that she has great faith in the program and thinks it’s amazing that children can now get care in their own backyard.

Yang, a mother of triplets, also enjoys helping children and co-chairing the event with her close friend.

The event is already at capacity with an estimated 600 attendees, with tickets sold out by the end of June — before invitations were even mailed out. Luckily, those who are unable to attend the event can still support the cause by donating, sponsoring a table or even purchasing raffle tickets in hopes of being able to attend.

Etkin says she’s proud of both her and Yang’s ability to put on such a popular, extravagant party and tie it to their Brazilian roots.

“We come from the national party capital in the world,” Etkin says. “This is how we are.”

Co-chairing a large event such as this one, regardless of heritage, is not easy. The planning began more than 10 months ago, shortly after last year’s Brazilian-themed Stars of the Season took place.

“It’s like a full-time job, I don’t think I could do this three years in a row,” says Etkin, who would often wake up in the middle of the night to jot down new ideas.

Despite the long hours and stressful planning, Etkin and Yang enjoying putting on something that is both fun and for a good cause. They hope this event will be an inspiration to others, and they enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of the many children they are helping.

David Lincoln and the Lincoln family earned Arizona Business Magazine’s first Lifetime Achievement Award to highlight the 5th annual, 2012 Healthcare Leadership Awards Thursday, March 8 at the Arizona Biltmore.

“Even though this is a lifetime award, I hope that I have a lot more life to live,” David Lincoln joked.

Anderson was instrumental in the planning, development and construction of the $350 million facility that opened in 2009 on the Banner Desert Regional Medical Center campus in Mesa. Before the facility was built, there was not enough adequate pediatric care in the East Valley for the number of children needing attention. Families had to travel to Phoenix or out of state to get the best care possible. Under Anderson’s leadership, Cardon was built “Through the Eyes of a Child,” which is the medical center’s foundational covenant that ensures the specific needs of the children are at the center of every decision, action and discussion that takes place within the hospital’s walls. Anderson, who is a registered nurse, has been instrumental in recruiting, attracting and convincing some of the nation’s top pediatric specialists to relocate and join the staff at Cardon.

HCL Awards 2012 - Susan ZookWith her extensive background in oncology, CTCA selected Zook to serve on the eight-person Senior Management Team during the development and construction of the Arizona hospital.  Overseeing construction of the facility from a clinical perspective, Zook developed a plan to procure a comprehensive array of the most advanced diagnostic tools and radiation oncology treatments previously unavailable to oncology patients in Arizona. Under Zook’s guidance, CTCA was the first hospital in Arizona to purchase Varian’s Trilogy technology; she led the charge for the hospital’s procurement of Calypso; and spearheaded the hospital’s development of the only BSD 5000 Superficial Hyperthermia program in Arizona.

HCL Awards 2012 - Chuck RibbeA dramatic example of Ribbe’s leadership in maximizing efficiencies is CTCA’s Lean Six Sigma program, which he oversees in his role as CFO. Under his leadership, the program eliminated more than 9,800 hours of patient wait time in 2011 alone. An additional 12,000 hours of non-value added employee time were also eliminated. To date, more than 65 percent of the hospital’s employees have been A3 certified, completing a variety of projects that have greatly improved efficiencies across every department of the hospital. Ribbe is ever vigilant about encouraging employees to uncover tremendous opportunities to increase time savings and decrease cost.

On March 1, AZRE hosted the 7th Annual RED Awards reception at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix to recognize the most notable commercial real estate projects of 2011 and the construction teams involved. AZRE held an open call for nominations and a record 116 projects were submitted by architects, contractors, developers and brokerage firms in Arizona. This year, the winner for Developer of the Year was Banner Health.

Banner HealthBanner Health continued its strategic investment in healthcare during 2011 spending hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure the healthcare needs of Arizona residents are met. In September, Banner Health opened phase one of its signature $109M Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center on the Banner Gateway campus in Gilbert. This 130,000 SF facility ushered in a new era of cancer care in Arizona.

In 2011, Banner Health also:

  • Began construction in Maricopa on the 80,000 SF Banner Medical Center, a public/private partnership with the city, creating $130M in economic impact over the next decade.
  • Expanded its pediatric unit at Banner Thunderbird adding 16 beds. The $1.5M expansion is part of a $290M campus expansion project that has added nearly 200 beds.
  • Opened a 100,000 SF, $21M new emergency department at Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa with 103 patient spaces.
  • Began a $71M, 136,000 SF million expansion of Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center’s Surgical Services department.

2012 Arizona Color Run

2012 Arizona Color Run At Tempe Beach Park [Photos/Video]

Hundreds, it seemed, gathered at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe this Saturday, Jan. 28 for the most unique — and colorful — 5k in the Valley: the Color Run.

The Color Run made its first stop of the 20-city tour in Arizona; the race reached capacity with attendees of all ages and skill level, who all gathered for a healthy dose of exercise and the opportunity to get bombarded with none other than colored powder thrown by volunteers, sponsors and staff of the Color Run.

While many weren’t expecting the cloud of powder to make it difficult to breath, many coughing off to the side and attempting to catch their breath, it can be safe to say it was worth it. But what many probably didn’t know was that the product is 100 percent natural and safe. Based off their website, you can apparently eat the powder; many, if not all, of us did anyway.

Marking each kilometer was a yellow, green, blue, purple and pink blitzing station. Once the rainbow-hued cluster of runners reached the end, the party was just beginning. It was now time to collect as many leftover bags of color and prepare for the color throw.

The best part? Proceeds from the 2012 Arizona Color Run benefit Banner Health’s Cardon Children’s Medical Center.
