Carondelet completes $17 Million Renovation

After a year of renovation and construction, the Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute (CHVI) will celebrate its official opening this month. The $17 million project is part of a major expansion of Carondelet Health Network’s heart program on both Carondelet St. Mary’s and Carondelet St. Joseph’s campuses. Nine of the 20 cardiac and vascular specialists employed by Carondelet have joined the Network this past year.

CHVI is located on the first and third floors of St. Mary’s Hospital. The Institute includes a dedicated Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit; a 21-bed, all private room progressive care unit; a 34-bed telemetry unit; two cardiac catheterization labs; three dedicated operating suites; an electrophysiology suite with cardiac arrhythmia ablation capability; and an endovascular surgical suite for complex aneurysm repair.

“We are so proud to offer Southern Arizonans the very latest in cardiac and vascular care technologies, coupled with one of the most highly skilled teams of physicians, surgeons and nurses,” said Dr. Amy Beiter, president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Hospital. “Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute is truly an extraordinary combination of high-tech and high-touch care.”

One highlight of the new Institute is the hybrid operating suite—a cardiac catheterization lab and cardiothoracic operating room combined. This OR is equipped with ambient lighting, high-tech equipment that dramatically reduces radiation exposure for patients and physicians, and video streaming—making it the only hybrid OR of its kind in the nation. The design of the hybrid OR streamlines workflow and creates a more relaxing environment. It offers clear sightlines and open spaces, reducing a patient’s potential sense of isolation. Clinical studies have shown that, in this specific environment, patients who remain awake during surgery require less medication for anxiety than in traditional surgical environments.

The hybrid OR is also equipped with the highest quality X-ray imaging for optimal visualization during complex surgical procedures. Lastly, this modern surgical environment will serve as a remote classroom, producing streaming video that will allow physicians and medical students anywhere in the world to observe and learn new techniques and procedures.

“The vision of Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute is to be nationally recognized as a premier destination for modern cardiovascular care through clinical excellence, research and physician education,” said Michael Hecht, MD and chief medical officer of Carondelet Specialist Group. “Our expert medical team has formed a unique collaboration to provide the highest quality, most comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients.”

St. Mary’s has received several national recognitions for quality patient care in the last few years. It has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence, a Distinguished Hospital for Critical Care and is among the top 100 hospitals in the nation for stroke care.1 St. Mary’s has also achieved the Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing it among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for quality and safety. A Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center, St. Mary’s was also honored in 2013 by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association with a Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care.

Arizona Hospital And Healthcare Association Adds Carondelet CEO To Board

The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) is pleased to welcome James K. Beckmann, Jr., President and CEO of Tucson-based Carondelet Health Network to the AzHHA Board of Directors.

As a member of the AzHHA Board, Mr. Beckmann will provide leadership and representation on behalf of the collective interests of hospitals and the patients they serve throughout Arizona.   Carondelet Health Network is Southern Arizona’s only Catholic, not-for-profit healthcare network, which includes four hospitals and serves a three-county region of 1.3 million residents.

“We are delighted that Jim has joined the AzHHA Board, and look forward to the insights and experience he brings to our Association,” said AzHHA President and Chief Executive Officer Laurie Liles.  “With his diverse career in the healthcare and insurance industries, Jim’s perspective will be particularly valuable given Arizona’s dynamic healthcare environment.”

“At Carondelet, we certainly recognize that strengthening healthcare, locally and regionally, requires our active participation,” said Beckmann.  “For that reason, it is a privilege for me to join the efforts of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association’s Board of Directors in ensuring Arizonans have a vital and valuable healthcare system available to all in the future.”

Jim Beckmann joined Carondelet Health Network as President and CEO in October 2011.  Prior to coming to Tucson, he served as Senior Vice President for System Support Services at Carondelet’s parent ministry, Ascension Health, based in St. Louis, Missouri. Ascension Health is the nation’s largest Catholic, not-for-profit healthcare system, providing care in more than 1,400 locations in 21 states.

In his Ascension role, Jim had executive management responsibility for Ascension Health’s supply chain, risk management, corporate responsibility, operational resources and Facility Resources Group.  Prior to joining Ascension Health in 2003, Beckmann had an extensive career in the insurance industry.

Beckmann was born in Columbus, Georgia, and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Applied Mathematics from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and an MBA from the University of Tampa in Florida.

The AzHHA Board has 15 members.

HCLA 2011- Hospital Executive

Honoree: David Veillette, President and CEO, Cancer Treatment Centers of America

David Veillette - AZ Business Magazine Mar/Apr 2011David Veillette, president and CEO of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, is a leader and innovator in medical technology — and his accomplishments are evident across the country.

In 2002, he built the first all-digital heart hospital in the nation at Indiana Heart Hospital. Then, in 2008, Veillette established the first all-digital cancer hospital in the nation, Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The digital aspect of the hospital allows for improved efficiencies. It provides access to real-time patient data, improves communication across departments, creates development of treatment plans more quickly, reduces medication errors and cuts the turnaround time for lab results.

Living by the motto, “It’s only and always about the patient,” Veillette prefers to roam the halls of his hospital instead of sitting behind a desk. This way he can meet with hospital visitors and assess the experiences of his facility firsthand. Veillette also has an emotional investment in his patients, often holding a patient’s hand as he or she receives chemotherapy or drinking a cup of joe with a family member as they anxiously wait for their loved one to complete surgery.
