Fired Pie delivers with hot new concept

Here’s the beautiful thing about Fired Pie: In less time than a typical commercial break, the staff at Fired Pie can make you a fresh pizza that suits your taste and specifications.

Fired Pie is the latest Chipotle-inspired build-your-own-meal, fast-casual dining concept to hit the Valley. The creation of veteran restaurateur Fred Morgan — the former CEO of Oregano’s — and partners Doug Doyle and Rico Cuomo, Fired Pie’s pizzas take three minutes to bake in a brick oven after customers choose their sauce, cheese, meats, vegetables and herbs.

“The fast-casual concept is really exploding,” Morgan said. “What we’ve been able to do here is create a concept that delivers high-quality gourmet pizza at a cost and convenience that appeals to the customer.”

During a recent visit to Fired Pie, that concept created a taste sensation.
We opted to try a pizza and the Steak & Blue, one of Fired Pie’s signature salads. Signature pizzas include Hawaiian barbecue with barbecue sauce, mozzarella, Canadian bacon, pineapple and cilantro; meaty Italian with tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, capicola and sausage; and tomato basil with two types of mozzarella, tomato, basil and garlic. We chose to build our own pizza with tomato sauce, pepperoni and fresh mozzarella.

Pizzas and salads are $7.75, regardless of the number of toppings.

During our visit, both dishes were exceptional. I grew up in an Italian family in New York, eating amazing homemade pizzas that my Italian grandmother spent all day preparing, so I am very discriminating when it comes to Italian food. But I can honestly say that Fired Pie’s pizzas match or exceed the quality of other Valley pizza restaurants, and they even give my grandmother a run for her money. Sorry, Grandma. The quality of the ingredients far exceed the expectations one would have from a high-end Italian restaurant, let alone a fast-casual restaurant. But Fired Pie takes that fast-casual concept to a whole new level.

The great thing for me is that one of Fired Pie’s location is at Park Central Mall, which is right across the street from my Central Phoenix office. And customers are already lining up to take advantage of the three-minute cooking time that makes a Fired Pie pizza a healthy lunch option for downtown workers.

If you do decide to get off the healthy train for a moment, words cannot adequately express the mouth-watering deliciousness of the Fired Pookie, Fired Pie’s soft-baked chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream that only costs $3.

Trust me on this one. If Fired Pie doesn’t have you at pizza, they’ll hook you by Pookie.

Two New Tenants Coming to Westgate in August

IT’SUGAR and RazzleberrieZ will open their doors this August at Westgate Entertainment District, adding even more family-friendly variety for West Valley patrons to enjoy.

IT’SUGAR, best known nationally as a novelty candy store, offers the world’s largest boxes of Nerds, Sweethearts and Pop Rocks, five pound Gummy Bears as well as candy themed accessories like Tootsie Roll shaped pillows and candy scented lotions. The new store will offer a fully stocked candy bar filled with a variety of favorites like gummy bears, hard shell candies, gumballs and much more. IT’SUGAR will be located in the 2,543 square-foot space next to Margaritaville, across from Yard House in the former Ride Makers location. Opening August 28, this is the first West Valley location for the company with four other Arizona stores in Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix.

“IT’SUGAR is the ultimate mixture of fun and indulgence. Guests can choose from over 70 toppings like fresh cut fruit, healthy granola, trendy mochi, Ghirardelli syrups and more.

Terminix Bringing 300 Jobs to Glendale

iStar Financial announced today that Terminix, the world’s largest pest control provider, will open a new customer care center at Westgate Entertainment District in October that will bring as many as 300 jobs to Arizona and help invigorate activity within the office buildings of the Entertainment District.

At 32,800 square feet, the deal is the largest office lease in Westgate’s history. The Memphis, Tenn.-based company is expanding its customer service operations to Arizona and will take over the entire second floor of the east office building beginning October 1.

“With Westgate’s attributes, including over 15 on-site restaurants and abundant parking, we strategically and aggressively targeted large corporate users and are pleased to announce the full-floor lease to Terminix,” said Jeff Teetsel, development manager of Westgate Entertainment District. “This is the largest office lease in Westgate’s history, and is another indication of our positive momentum. With our direct freeway access and ease and efficiency for employees to walk to lunch, we have a uniquely desirable mixed-use environment for office tenants.”

The announcement comes on the heels of strong leasing activity at Westgate Entertainment District in recent months including signed leases from Buffalo Wild Wings and Whiskey Rose Bar & Grill and the recent openings of Chipotle, Gallery Glendale and The Arizona Republic, which relocated its West Valley office earlier this year.

“This lease is a validation of the market’s response to the nearly $1 million in investments iStar has made in upgrades to the property over the past year that includes improving the parking lot and common areas and installing new signage to benefit office tenants,” said Teetsel.

Terminix, a company with revenues exceeding $1.3 billion, is the largest subsidiary of ServiceMaster, one of the world’s largest residential service networks. Terminix services more than 3 million residential and commercial customers in 47 states and 14 countries.

“This new Arizona facility reinforces our commitment to enhancing the Terminix customer experience and providing one-call resolution to any customer questions or concerns,” said Larry Pruitt, president of Terminix.  “Terminix already earns best-in-class service ratings from customers, and this new center will help us take that service to an even higher level.”

Terminix conducted a site selection process throughout the western United States, narrowed the focus to Denver, Salt Lake City and Phoenix, and ultimately selected metro Phoenix and Glendale specifically.

CBRE’s Bryan Taute and Brad Anderson represented the landlord and Newmark Grubb Knight Frank’s Aaron Sommer, of the Atlanta office, and Geoffrey Waldrom and Dan Dobric, of the Phoenix office, represented the tenant.

The City of Glendale Economic Development Department worked to expedite permit processing and coordination to help the tenant meet its expedited occupancy target date. Jeanine Jerkovic in City’s Economic Development department coordinated the City’s efforts, along with Department Director Brian Friedman.

Food, Entertainment & Shopping: Tempe Marketplace

I headed up to Tempe Marketplace to check out the shops and restaurants that keep college students returning throughout the school year. Being a student from Arizona State University, many of the people within the city of Tempe and college students gather here to pass the time. Whether you want to go to the movies, try new restaurants, or even shop for new outfits or dorm supplies, Tempe Marketplace has what you’re looking for.

Starving by the time my boyfriend and I arrived, we were tasked with the choice of which restaurant to choose. Some of the restaurants available are California Pizza Kitchen, Lucille’s Smokehouse Barbeque, Kabuki, Red Robin, Chipotle and the Thirsty Lion.

We decided on Chipotle, a Mexican grill offering burritos, bowls, tacos, and even kids meals. The variety allows you to make to the right choice, such as vegetarian style, chicken, steak, and barbacoa beef. As we emerged from Chipotle, full, we were quickly tempted by the smell of popcorn in the air (thanks to the nearby Harkins Theatre) as well as the ice cream and frozen yogurt eaten by passersby (from Cold Stone Creamery and Mojo Yogurt, respectively).

Escaping temptation, we made a quick stop into Claire’s, greeted with Justin Bieber hats, flip-flops, purses and other colorful treasures for teens and young girls alike. If you know what you’re looking for, there are numerous earrings and jewelry that are perfect for even a college student’s wardrobe.

In search of pop culture attire more our age group, we ventured into Hot Topic. From Mario to Disney, you can’t help but pick out a variety of things you simply can’t live without.

With so many stores within a few steps of one another, we quickly visited 20 shops, including Tilly’s, Journey’s, Pac Sun, Lids, Oakley, Target, Ross and World Market.

Tempe Marketplace is also the perfect place to stay updated with upcoming shows at ASU Gammage. The previous season was posted, but other upcoming events that Tempe Marketplace sponsored are listed along the paths between the various stores.

Near Barnes & Noble, there is a kid-splash fountain for little ones to play in. Many happy moms were taking advantage of this amenity and watched their little ones play as they sat in the shade. The area, called The District”, has free Wi-Fi, and Tempe Marketplace is pet friendly.

I look forward to another visit to Tempe Marketplace to explore the stores as well as try more food from the variety of restaurants.

Chipotle Helps Celebrate Earth Day With Free Burritos

This Earth Day, April 22, Chipotle Mexican Grill will reward eco-friendly customers with a free burrito, bowl, salad or order of tacos if they purchase a Chipotle-branded repurposed billboard bag from Chipotle’s online store, store.chipotle.com, between now and April 14. Chipotle will donate all of its proceeds from the sale of the bags to the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.

In keeping with Chipotle’s commitment to finding more sustainable solutions, the lunch bags are made through a unique process called “upcyling,” in which billboards sourced directly from Chipotle’s outdoor advertisements are given a second life by transforming would be waste into ultra-durable, one-of-a-kind, products using less energy than traditional recycling methods. Each lunch bag purchased through April 14 will include an eco-friendly card with a unique barcode that a customer can redeem for a free menu item on Earth Day. The cards are printed on tree-free stone paper that is made from limestone salvaged from construction sites and quarry waste.

“We are changing the way people think about and eat fast food,” said Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle. “For us, that starts with serving food made with better ingredients from more sustainable sources, but that same idea impacts all facets of our business. We are always pushing ourselves to find better, more sustainable practices for everything we do, and looking to educate our customers about these issues and why we think they are so important.”

Designed exclusively for Chipotle by Loomstate, a pioneer of sustainable apparel, and made in Denver by Billboard Ecology Partners, the lunch bags are available exclusively through Chipotle’s online store. The bag design features a classic top-roll adjustable strap closure, reinforced side seams and handle, and a convenient extra-large back pocket. The black back and front panels of the bags are the reverse side of the billboards while the side panels showcase unique front-facing billboard designs that differ by bag, meaning that each is truly one of a kind.

For every 20,000 lunch bags made from retired Chipotle signage, landfills are spared some 78,000 square feet of billboard vinyl — enough material to cover 2.7 Olympic swimming pools.

Lunch bag supplies are limited and customers must purchase their bag between Monday, March 26 and Saturday, April 14, 2012, in order to receive it in time for Earth Day. Each lunch bag purchased through April 14, 2012 will include a card containing a barcode, which customers must present to redeem their free Chipotle menu item. Each customer is limited to one free burrito, bowl, salad or tacos per barcode presented.

All proceeds from the lunch bag sales will go towards the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, which launched in August 2011 with the debut of “Back to the Start,” an animated short film available at YouTube.com/Chipotle. The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation provides funding to support sustainable agriculture, family farming, and culinary education.
