Arizona Business Community Supports HB2111

The undersigned organizations and businesses want to express their strong support for the passage of HB2111 with the floor amendment that will be offered by Senator Steve Yarbrough. This final amendment represents major concessions to address concerns that have been expressed by the city representatives.

This final amendment reflects the cities’ request for a separate online portal for the collection of sales taxes in the 18 non-program cities. In addition, the amendment reflects the cities’ demand to maintain the authority to audit single-location businesses in their city. Lastly, the amendment removes all of the changes to prime contracting tax except for the trade and service contractors.

While the Yarbrough amendment reflects major concessions to the cities that undermine some of the important reforms recommended by the Transaction Privilege (Sales) Tax Simplification Task Force, we believe this final proposal still reflects historic progress that deserves final passage.

The Senator Yarbrough floor amendment will provide for the following:

* Single Point of Administration – the Department of Revenue (DOR) will become the single point of administration and collection of TPT. However, at the request of the cities, there will be a separate online portal for the 18 non-program cities. Despite this concession, the cities remain opposed because they want to continue to require businesses making paper sales tax remissions to pay the state and city separately. Their proposal provides most small businesses no administrative relief from making multiple payments to multiple jurisdictions each month.

* Single and Uniform Audit – DOR will administer a standardized state audit program where all state and city auditors are trained and certified by DOR. Despite major concessions from the business community to allow cities to continue to audit local businesses, the cities continue to push for further changes that will undermine much needed reforms to standardize state and local audits.

* Trade/Service Contracting Reform – Service contractors working directly for an owner to maintain, repair, and replace existing property would pay tax on materials at retail and not be subject to the Prime Contracting Tax. During Task Force deliberations, the cities repeatedly conceded that this area of the prime contracting tax was problematic and should be changed. However, after almost a year of study and discussion, they have offered a change to the taxation of service contractors that provides no administrative relief and couples that change with a request that the state give the cities $80 million from use tax collections.

Arizona’s chaotic and dysfunctional sales tax system has been the subject of considerable controversy at the Capitol for over 30 years. The creation of the Task Force, as well as the appearance for the first time that the cities recognized the need for reform, gave Arizona businesses great hope that this system would finally be reformed. We strongly encourage state policymakers to pass a sales tax reform bill that is grounded in sound tax policy and focuses on reducing the extraordinary compliance costs on Arizona businesses.

Cox looks to Honor Environmental Volunteers

Cox Communications, in partnership with The Trust for Public Land (TPL), is seeking nominations for Arizona’s second annual Cox Conserves Heroes awards program. Nominations are being accepted at www.cox7.com/cox-conserves for volunteers in Metro Phoenix and Southern Arizona who are creating, preserving or enhancing outdoor spaces.

A total of $15,000 will be donated to local environmental nonprofits on behalf of the winner and two finalists.

A judging panel comprised of civic and environmental leaders will select three finalists who will then compete to be named Arizona’s 2013 Cox Conserves Hero. The winner will be chosen through an online public vote.

A nominee’s activity must be performed on a volunteer basis and may not be part of the individual’s paid job.

Nominations are accepted through May 20 at www.cox7.com/cox-conserves.

Melinda Gulick was named Arizona’s 2012 Cox Conserves Hero for her long-standing commitment to and passion for Arizona’s open space. Cox Business unveils faster Internet speeds

Cox Business announced that 150Mbps/20Mbps download/upload speeds are available for small- and medium-sized businesses requiring a super-fast connection to the Internet to serve their customers. In Arizona, this level of connectivity is only available from Cox Business.

SRP Offers Free Electrical Safety Workshop

SRP is sponsoring a free Electric Safety Workshop to educate workers on the potential hazards of working near overhead and underground electrical power lines and other utilities. The workshop will focus on tree workers, landscapers and excavators as well as individuals who work around utility lines.

Instruction will be in English and Spanish.

The event will include safety presentations on overhead and underground electrical, gas and other utilities, OSHA regulations, Blue Stake procedures, trenching and shoring demonstrations, and live electrical demonstrations of what can happen when contact is made with power lines. The event will also feature presentations by the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health, Arizona Public Service, Southwest Gas, Cox Communications, Arizona Blue Stake, Arizona Burn Center, Trench Shore Rentals, Asplundh Tree Expert Company and Liberty Wildlife. There will also be safety presentations including a live tree rescue and hazards involving chain saws and aerial lifts.

Participants must be 18 years or older. The workshop includes lunch and a chance to win raffle prizes. Tree workers can receive 4.5 CEUs (A/U/T/M) from the International Society of Arboriculture.

When: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 23. Registration begins at 6 a.m.

Where: Every year, professional tree trimmers, landscapers and excavators are killed or seriously injured in electrical contact tree-trimming and excavation accidents.  Workers also operate dangerous equipment and are vulnerable to serious injuries when working near overhead and underground electric lines and other utilities.

D-backs announce 2013 promotional schedule

The other two bobbleheads will feature fan favorites Paul Goldschmidt (Aug. 10) and Miguel Montero (Sept. 14). The Montero bobblehead will be given away on Hispanic Heritage Day.

New this year, the D-backs will host a street festival prior to three games throughout the season (Apr. 1, Apr. 13, May 11, Sept. 14) that will feature food trucks, D-backs inflatables and several activities before fans enter the stadium.

ASU Center becomes a resource to teach service

Customer service was once viewed as the cost of doing business.

“Across almost every industry, leaders are focusing on service as a way to compete in today’s competitive marketplace,” says Mary Jo Bitner, academic director for the Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business.

But times have changed. Companies that are in search of new revenue streams are finding that in addition to providing great customer service, offering value-added services to their product lines are helping their bottom lines. And the help them make the most of the opportunities, many are seeking help from the ASU Center, which focuses on research and executive education in managing and marketing services.

“Customer demand and the competitive challenges posed by the commoditization of many products has pushed many goods-based companies to take another look at services as a source of revenue and profit,” says Stephen Brown, director of the Center for Services Leadership, who has spent the past 20 years tracking the growing importance of services as a product. “Many are following market leaders to become goods-and-services companies.”

For example, Boeing has broadened its offerings by adding the lucrative market of services to its aircraft manufacturing. The Hewlett Packard and Compaq merger created a new company whose major product is services. IBM’s impressive financials over the past decade — in shining contrast to its competitors — were largely the result of its service businesses.

“In 2001, we were launching our first fee-based service business,” says Steve Church, president of Avnet Integrated and chief corporate business development and planning officer. “We wanted to offer more services and solutions. We knew a lot, but there was a lot we didn’t know.”

Church says Avnet’s membership in the center — which concentrates on expanding service innovation by combining the latest scientific insights from the academic world with the best of business strategy in the real world — allowed the company to “build a culture of service excellence that focuses on the customer and gives each a great customer experience.”

The Center, which was created in 1985, remains the only one of its kind in the United States, devoted to research and education in the services field.  Its research findings form the foundation of the Center’s executive education program, attended by managers and executives of leading firms.  Member companies include AT&T, Charles Schwab and Co., Ford Motor Company, IBM, Mayo Clinic and others, who sponsor research, fund scholarships, host MBA student teams and participate in executive education.

Many member companies sponsor research that is published in academic journals, and shared at the Center’s executive education forums. Bitner, for example, has been studying the effects of self-service technologies (SST), working with Ford and a major pharmaceutical benefits management company.

“The Center is really a tremendous resource for any company that has a strategy to to improve customer serve or add services to augment its products,” Church says. “We learned that by getting our employees engaged in customer service, we built customer loyalty, it helped us compete, and it enhanced our financial performance.”

Legends district partners with Southwestern Eye Center

The Legends Entertainment District, a first-of-its-kind joint venture between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns, announced a new partnership with Southwestern Eye Center that features the District’s first static super graphic with a 3-D embellishment. The announcement was made by Legends Entertainment District General Manager Judd Norris.

“The Legends Entertainment District continues to break the mold of traditional ‘billboard’ advertising by bringing to life its first three-dimensional concept,” said Norris. “Southwestern Eye Centers challenged us to do something unique and memorable. Taking that into account, we were able to bring their already recognizable glasses campaign to life on a 36’ x 42’ super graphic. The glasses are so unique that the creator of the image, BlueMedia, has submitted the design into several marketing concept competitions.”

The first-of-its-kind graphic is located on the Phoenix Convention Center Garage at the corner of 5th Street and Jefferson, across from Chase Field. It is one of 36 static signs in the District that also features four LED signs, six window graphics and five custom signs.

Healy joins Cox southwestern leadership team

Cox Communications has announced Stephanie Barat Healy as its new director of public affairs for Southern Arizona.  Healy will be responsible for all Cox Public Affairs and Community Relations activities in Pima and Cochise counties.

“We are honored to have Stephanie heading up our southern Arizona Cox Communications Public Affairs team,” said Lisa Lovallo, Vice President and Market Manger, Southern Arizona.  “Stephanie and her family have been in Tucson for many years.  She cares deeply about our community and has a proven track record of bring diverse groups together to address public policy issues in a collaborative, sensitive and positive way.  She will be a great addition to our team.”

Prior to Cox, Healy held the position of executive vice president for the Southern Arizona Leadership Council (SALC). Her experience directing and implementing public policy and external relations activities for SALC will make for a smooth transition into her new role at Cox.

Healy has also served as president of the Hospital Council of Southern Arizona where she managed all aspects of a not for profit membership organization that included fourteen regional hospitals with a purpose of working collectively to improve the region’s health care climate and system.

Healy also held the position of Director of Economic Development for the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce where she oversaw the division’s development of programs that promoted Tucson as a center for global trade and investment.

Healy became a Flinn-Brown Academy Fellow in fall 2011 after being nominated and accepted into the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership; a unique statewide program to nurture and develop leaders. She has also been recognized by Tucson Lifestyle as a key community leader working to build Tucson’s high-tech economy.

After relocating from Chicago nearly seventeen years ago, Healy resides in Tucson and is married to Tim Healy, vice president of Brokerage Services for CB Richard Ellis in Tucson.  The Healys have two children.

Cox elevates Arizonan to top HR post

Cox Communications has recently appointed Larry Hofer as vice president of human resources for the Southwest region.  As vice president, Hofer will manage and execute all major HR operations for Cox Communications in Arizona and Nevada.

Hofer, who previously worked as VP of Human Resources for the Oklahoma region, has been with Cox Communications for nearly six years. His leadership qualities and diligent work ethic contributed to Cox Oklahoma’s distinction as one of the Top Ten Best Places to Work, according to Business Journal of Oklahoma

Prior to his time in Oklahoma, Hofer served as VP of Human Resources in San Diego where he earned the reputation as an exceptional business partner and employee. Before joining the Cox Communications team, Hofer held numerous leadership positions with various technology and communication companies like Comcast, AT&T, IBM, Honeywell and Lexmark International.

Hofer graduated from Western Washington University with a B.A. in industrial organizational psychology. He also holds a B.A. in demography/sociology from Western Washington University; a master’s of labor and industrial relations from Michigan State University, a professional certification in Human Resources (SPHR) and is a graduate of NAMIC Executive Program at UCLA Anderson School of Business.

Afterschool Programs Get STEM Grants From Cox

Nine afterschool programs around the state will each receive a $1500 STEM grant from the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence and Cox Communications to support creative efforts to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math into today’s curriculum.

“At a time of shrinking funding in schools across the state, these grants emphasize the critical importance of using an informal STEM approach to curriculum in afterschool and out-of-school-time programs because they remain one of the few opportunities for youth to engage in projects incorporating science, technology, engineering and math,” said Melanie McClintock, Executive Director, Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence.  “The quality of the proposals we received from around the state made the decisions incredibly difficult, but also pointed to the remarkable quality of afterschool programs developed and operating across the state.”
Proposals were submitted from urban, rural, suburban and charter schools across the state as well as from community-based afterschool programs.

JLL completes 240,000 SF industrial lease for CTDI

The Phoenix office of Jones Lang LaSalle completed a 240,000 SF industrial lease in Tolleson for Pennsylvania-based Communications Test Design, Inc. (CTDI).

The long-term lease is part of a national third-party service contract with Cox Communications that will generate approximately 200 new local jobs and fill one of the last three existing, scalable industrial building solutions in the Phoenix market.

“Demand is filling Phoenix’s larger blocks of available industrial space,” said Jones Lang LaSalle Managing Director Marc Hertzberg. “When we evaluated CTDI’s market options, there were really only three viable spaces that could fill their needs. Now that this lease has been executed, there are only two such spaces left in Phoenix for similar users.”

Hertzberg, SIOR, represented CTDI in the lease negotiations with industrial team partner Anthony J. Lydon, SIOR and also a Managing Director in the Phoenix office of Jones Lang LaSalle, and Jackson Cross Partners, which represents CTDI nationally.

The Phoenix CTDI lease is one that will allow the company to service, repair or recycle Cox Communications network equipment, creating jobs ranging from operations to engineering to warehousing, and supporting a centralization/standardization process for Cox.

“Being just 1.5 miles off of I-10 was a major draw for CTDI, who needs efficient Valleywide access to serve Cox customers and business lines,” Lydon said. “LBA’s creativity and financial strength was another deciding factor. It will allow CTDI to occupy their new building very quickly.”

CTDI will take possession of its new space by 4Q 2012. The building is at 8602 W. Buckeye Rd. and is comprised of 238,000 SF of warehouse space and 2,695 SF of speculative office space. It is part of the Westside Business Park, a 66-acre, 1.1 MSF project that is home to other leading warehouse tenants including Staples, CostCo, Bose and International Paper.

Civil Discourse: What, How And Why Now?

It seems to be the topic of many conversations these days. But what is civil discourse, and how can we achieve it? More importantly, why has the call become increasingly louder for a concerted effort to find a different way of electing our leaders, solving our problems and interfacing with each other?

What is Civil Discourse

Civil discourse is our ability to have conversation on topics about which we disagree and to listen to each other’s perspectives. Civil discourse requires respect of the other participants and an appreciation for others’ experiences.

To advance society and improve the quality of life in Arizona, we must be prepared to discuss important, yet potentially contentious issues, such as growth, transportation, healthcare and education. Our democracy is dependent upon responsible residents that can, and will, wrestle with these tough issues, without partisanship, while maintaining respect for the need to hear, understand and take into account different viewpoints.

Join the Discussion

An interactive panel of local experts will be discussing civil discourse, what it is and why it’s important at Valley Forward’s luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel.

Panelists include Paul Johnson, former Mayor of the city of Phoenix and manager of Southwest Next Capital Management; Chuck Coughlin, president of HighGround Public Affairs; and Steve Rizley, senior vice president and general manager of Cox Communications. Tarah Jackson, president of Arizona Town Hall will serve as moderator.

These speakers will be engaging attendees in a conversation on civil discourse, the shifting of politics in Arizona, consensus building and regional thinking. It’s especially important in this presidential election year, which also marks Arizona’s centennial celebration and the 50th anniversary of Arizona Town Hall.
