Arizona’s 25 Most Influential Minority Business Leaders

What would you do it you opened the pages of this magazine and saw Jerry Colangelo listed as one of the 25 Most Influential Minority Business Leaders in Arizona? You’d do a double take, but it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.

Consider this: Among 439,633 Arizonans under age 5 in 2012, this is how the Census broke down those numbers:

• Hispanic: 196,776 (44.8 percent)
• Non-Hispanic white: 171,888 (39.1 percent)
• American Indian and Alaska Native: 22,198 (5 percent)
• Black: 18,617 (4.2 percent)
• Asian: 11,311 (2.6 percent)
• Two or more races: 18,088 (4.1 percent)
• Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander: 755 (0.17).

If you combine numbers like that with the fact that 91.7 percent of the nation’s population growth between 2000 and 2010 was attributed to racial and ethnic minorities, with the largest segment of population growth occurring in the Hispanic community, lists like this — the 25 Most Influential Minority Business Leaders in Arizona of 2014 — could become obsolete in our lifetimes.

Until we get there and as our state’s minority population moves toward majority status, it’s important to notice that the state’s most dynmanic business leaders have helped fuel our economic recovery and growth … and many of them just happen to be minorities. And while the future looks bright, we still have work to in overcoming outdated perceptions. According to a 2012 Minority Business Enterprise Report commissioned by the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Phoenix MBDA Business Center, a significant portion of minority-owned businesses in Arizona have had problems earning the trust of their customers, suppliers, peers and lenders and need support from within the business community to help break down some of these misconceptions and stigma.

The 25 Most Influential Minority Business Leaders in Arizona, whom you will meet below, have changed that perception.

Benito Almanza
Arizona president
Bank of America
Heritage: Mexican-American
A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Santa Clara, Almanza has been with Bank of America for 34 years. He is a member of the Teach for America Arizona Board.
His hope for professional legacy: “Working every day with great teammates to make our community better and surrounding myself with strong leaders and developing them to replace me.”

Glynis Bryan
CFO
Insight Enterprises Inc.
Heritage: Jamaican
Bryan is responsible for setting the company’s financial strategies; ensuring the company has the appropriate financial and operating controls and systems in place to support future growth; and serving as a financial and business advisor to the leadership team.
Her hope for professional legacy: “Setting a standard of excellence in an organization and helping teammates reach their full potential.”

Debbie Cotton
Director
Phoenix Convention Center
Heritage: African American
Cotton manages a staff of 240 employees, a budget of $47.5 million and is the city’s chief representative to the state’s tourism and hospitality industry.
Her hope for professional legacy: “Throughout my career, I’d like to be remembered for adhering to high ethical standards and inspiring individuals to pursue careers within public service.”

Heritage: Peruvian and Mexican
De la Melena, who directs the state’s leading advocate representing more than 60,000 Hispanic business enterprises, has 20 years of global brand management, business development and Latino marketing experience gained from conducting business in more than 30 countries.
His hope for professional legacy: “For helping the lifeblood of our economy, small businesses, prosper – especially minority-owned businesses, now one-fourth of Arizona’s total. Our future global competitiveness depends on it.”

Enos is the 23rd president of the Salt River Community and the second women elected to the office. Enos is the first member of the Community to become a lawyer and practiced in the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office for 11 years.

Her hope for professional legacy: “The top qualities I’d like to be remembered for is someone who was unafraid to try something new and to do it with integrity for the good of my people.”

As the CEO of one of the nation’s largest systems of community colleges, he is leading MCCCD to address the community’s education and workforce training needs.

Griffin leads Arizona’s largest minority-run business with more that 2,500 employees.
Her hope for professional legacy: “I would like to be remembered for creating a legacy of self-sufficiency and volunteerism in my community. My Tribe needs only to seek within themselves and have confidence in the beauty of their abilities to continue this legacy.”

Since he was named president and CEO in 2004, Kong has guided Best Western International through a brand resurgence, winning numerous awards for training, social media and ecommerce initiatives. Brand Keys ranked Best Western No. 1 in customer loyalty for four consecutive years.

Luna leads Helios Education Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals in Arizona and Florida to succeed in postsecondary education. He is the former president of Valley of the Sun United Way and has held positions with Pepsi, IBM and the Office of Governor Bruce Babbitt.

Roberts specializes in stereotactic radiosurgery and tumors of the brain, spine, and prostate. He also received a law degree from Stanford University and practiced corporate law in the Silicon Valley for start-up companies.
His hope for professional legacy: “I would like to be remembered professionally as compassionate, knowledgeable and having integrity. Also as someone who innovated in an era of health care reform.”

Sanghi, named president of Microchip in 1990, CEO in 1991 and chairman in 1993, is the author of “Driving Excellence: How The Aggregate System Turned Microchip Technology from a Failing Company to a Market Leader.”
His hope for professional legacy: “For building Microchip Technology into one of the most successful semiconductor companies, which achieved an unprecedented 100 consecutive profitable quarters in a brutally competitive industry.”

Song Ong, who chair the Arizona Supreme Court Commission on Minorities, was the first Asian female judge in Arizona and first minority to be named as Phoenix chief judge.
Her hope for professional legacy: “It would be my great honor to be remembered for three primary things: (1) my work in judicial and civics education, (2) the promotion of cultural competency and diversity in the judicial and legal profession, and (3) promoting access to justice for all Arizonans through legal services and education.”

In 2004, Touché became chairman and CEO of one of the largest insurance agencies in the United States, with nearly 200 employees in three offices and more than $300 million in total premiums.

Vermaland, founded by Verma, holds more than 24,000 acres of land in Arizona with a portfolio valued at $500 million. Nabha, the tiny Indian village Verma was born in, could fit many times into the acreage he now controls in the desert Southwest.
His hope for professional legacy: “I saw a dream and pursued it. Success without humility is a curse, but Success with your values intact is a blessing.”

D-backs Announce Most Valuable Partner Awards

The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) announced the winners of last week’s Most Valuable Partner Awards, the unique award show designed to honor the best D-backs’ partners in a variety of categories. The awards ceremony was held at Gila River Casinos’ Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino – Ovations Live! Showroom.

Several D-backs players were on hand to take part in the red carpet Oscar-style awards show, including Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Hill, J.J. Putz, A.J. Pollock and Josh Collmenter. An All-Encompassing Entertainment Experience at Vee Quiva Hotel and Casino

As we drove past the former Vee Quiva casino on our way to attend the grand opening of the all-new Vee Quiva Hotel and Casino, the difference in size and grandeur between the two was astonishing to me.

The new Vee Quiva Hotel and Casino, which opened on July 2, is all about offering an all-encompassing entertainment experience. As Public Relations Manager Melody Hudson commented, “It’s no longer the day of a casino floor and a buffet; it’s offering a wide variety of amenities from dining to entertainment to a hotel, etc.”

There was excitement in the air as the CEO of Gila River Casinos, John James, thanked those who contributed to the project and counted down to the ribbon cutting, officially opening the new facility to the public. There has been great anticipation leading up to the unveiling of this state-of-the-art entertainment facility, and it did not disappoint.

As you walk in the main entrance, you notice the elegant, changing lights in the ceiling that are illuminating the casino floor. The room is also adorned with Frank-Lloyd-Wright-style décor, making it uniquely Arizonan. The casino area is extensive. Gamers can choose from over 950 slot machines, 36 table games, a 550-seat bingo hall and a 16-table poker room.

Vee Quiva DitkasJust off the casino floor is the first Ditka’s restaurant in the Western United States, founded by NFL head coach Mike Ditka. A local favorite, Los Reyes de la Torta, is also a featured dining option. Vee Quiva is one of three valley locations for this authentic Mexican restaurant. Man vs. Food’s Adam Richman came all the way to Arizona to try their “Torta del Rey.” A cozy coffee shop, Panda Express, Fat Burger and Dunkin’ Donuts make up the remainder of the food court area.

Guests can also enjoy live music at two different entertainment venues: VQ Live, a luxurious yet comfortable lounge, and a separate event center that will host various performances. Both venues have the capability of opening up to the outside so guests can enjoy entertainment under the stars during the cooler months.

In addition to the gaming, dining and entertainment features, guests can relax in the 90-room boutique hotel that accompanies the casino. A fitness center and pool are also available. As Hudson mentioned, there are not many boutique hotels on the West side, making Vee Quiva, located just south of Laveen, especially unique.

With the endless casino games, both local and familiar cuisine, live entertainment and a luxurious place to relax, the Vee Quiva Hotel and Casino definitely delivers on its promise to provide an all-encompassing entertainment experience for both Arizonans and out-of-state visitors alike.

D-backs announce 2013 promotional schedule

The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced the 2013 promotional schedule, which includes three bobbleheads, a Wade Miley Garden Gnome and more than a dozen additional promotional items throughout the season. Individual tickets for each of these games, including Opening Day on April 1 vs. the St. Louis Cardinals, will go on sale on Mar. 4. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Chase Field Ticket Office, online at dbacks.com or by calling 602.514.8400. Fans can also access exclusive presale opportunities by becoming a D-backs Insider at dbacks.com.

The first of the three bobbleheads is the Aaron Hill #BiCycle Bobblehead that will honor Hill for his two cycles last season (June 8). The other two bobbleheads will feature fan favorites Paul Goldschmidt (Aug. 10) and Miguel Montero (Sept. 14). The Montero bobblehead will be given away on Hispanic Heritage Day.

New this year, the D-backs will host a street festival prior to three games throughout the season (Apr. 1, Apr. 13, May 11, Sept. 14) that will feature food trucks, D-backs inflatables and several activities before fans enter the stadium.

Also on the promotional schedule are several $5 College Nights, School Family Nights, Choir Nights and Senior Days as well as Stitch & Pitch (April 13), four educational field trip days (April 29-May 2) and events for the Girl Scouts (May 11), a Camp Day (June 19), Cheer Night (August 31) and a Band Night (September 28). Three Mystery Ball events are also planned for April 27, June 8 and August 10. The club will host post-game fireworks shows, presented by Gila River Casinos, following 10 Friday night home games.

Legends district partners with Southwestern Eye Center

The Legends Entertainment District, a first-of-its-kind joint venture between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns, announced a new partnership with Southwestern Eye Center that features the District’s first static super graphic with a 3-D embellishment. The announcement was made by Legends Entertainment District General Manager Judd Norris.

“The Legends Entertainment District continues to break the mold of traditional ‘billboard’ advertising by bringing to life its first three-dimensional concept,” said Norris. “Southwestern Eye Centers challenged us to do something unique and memorable. Taking that into account, we were able to bring their already recognizable glasses campaign to life on a 36’ x 42’ super graphic. The glasses are so unique that the creator of the image, BlueMedia, has submitted the design into several marketing concept competitions.”

The first-of-its-kind graphic is located on the Phoenix Convention Center Garage at the corner of 5th Street and Jefferson, across from Chase Field. It is one of 36 static signs in the District that also features four LED signs, six window graphics and five custom signs.

The Legends Entertainment District offers customized, larger than life out of home opportunities that run 18 hours a day, 365 days a year. The project was designed to encompass landmark downtown facilities, extending from 1st Avenue to 7th Street and Washington to Jackson Street.

New Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino Set To Open In 2013

With recently built properties at Wild Horse Pass and Lone Butte, it was only a matter of time that the Gila River Indian Community would upgrade Vee Quiva casino in Laveen.

That goal came to fruition today when Gila River Casinos broke ground on a new Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino, scheduled to open a year from now.

Gila River Indian Community officials and other dignitaries were on hand to dedicate the project that will translate into 500 construction jobs and more than 300 new full- or part-time jobs once it is complete.

The new Vee Quiva will feature a 70,000 SF casino; more than 900 slot machines; 40 table games, including 20 poker tables; 550 seat bingo hall; a 3-story hotel with 90 rooms that will boast a fitness center, pool and more than 3,000 SF of banquet space; 2 lounges including a premium Players Club Lounge; a variety of dining options including a food court, coffee kiosk, signature restaurant, a dining option that will remain open all day; and 2,800 total parking spaces including a 1,000 space covered parking garage.

The project is expected to cost approximately $135M. Perini Building Corporation is the general contractor and Friedmutter Group of Las Vegas will provide design and architectural services.

“Rebuilding Vee Quiva Casino is part of our strategic plan the Gila River Indian Community has set in place to refresh its casinos while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the community and creating new job opportunities in Arizona,” said Anthony Villareal, Sr., Casino Expansion Owners Team Chairman.

Friedmutter Group, an award-winning, internationally-recognized architectural firm, has  recently completed the Navajo Nation’s Northern Edge Casino, Gun Lake Casino and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Construction is scheduled to begin this summer will take place just south of Vee Quiva Casino’s existing facility. The current casino will remain open and operational during construction until the new Vee Quiva Casino opens in 2013.

What’s New At Chase Field For 2012?

Chase Field, considered by many to be the most fan-friendly ballpark in the country, will open its doors tomorrow and host its first two exhibition games of the season against the Milwaukee Brewers, followed by Opening Weekend April 6-8. A number of additions have been made in order to enhance the fan experience, ranging from food and merchandise enhancements to technology and dynamic signage.

“Much like we feel we improved the club on the field after winning our division last year, we felt it was equally as important to continue to improve the experience off the field,” said D-backs’ President and CEO Derrick Hall. “We strive to provide our fans with the best entertainment in all of sports at a great value and we’re looking forward to seeing them at Chase Field.”

In addition to all the ballpark favorites, Levy Restaurants has added a number of new offerings for fans, highlighted by Meatball Mania, a new spin on an old fan favorite. A skewer of six meatballs is now available in three delicious flavors including traditional beef meatball with marinara, chicken meatball with green chile verde and thai pork meatball with ginger-soy barbecue. Other new menu items debuting at Chase Field include Chicken Tacos and the Ten Pack Taco; delicious vegan options featuring Sloppy Jane and Chilled Vegan Burritos; ballpark must-haves including Candy Shop Popcorn, Gourmet Pretzel Twists and Crispy Potatoes; and the Short Rib Smasher and BBQ Short Rib Dog.

As part of the D-backs Digital Experience at the ballpark, nine concession locations at Chase Field will now offer fans the opportunity to order concession items from their smartphone during the 2012 season.  Fans can order ahead and skip the line by downloading the free MLB.com At The Ballpark app. For the first time ever at Chase Field, fans will also be able to customize their Subway sandwiches this season by using this app.  The locations that will offer mobile ordering are the Red Hot Stands at Sections 105, 118, 126 and 139, Doubleheaders at Sections 305, 316 and 324 and Subway at Sections 125 and 306.

Technological advances will not only enhance the culinary experience at Chase Field, but will continue to improve the viewing experience as well. Once again Digital D-backs is available to fans for free in the ballpark via AT&T Wi-Fi and allows them to watch replays on-demand from their seats, as well as receive up-to-the-minute gameday and ballpark information.

For the first time ever at Chase Field, D-backs fans now have the option to receive their tickets utilizing D-backs FanPass. By choosing this option when purchasing single-game tickets, fans avoid the stop at the box office and can go straight to the gate when arriving for the game. D-backs FanPass allows fans to store their tickets on their credit card and swipe at the gate for entry. A seat locator will be printed for each fan to direct them to their seats.

Season ticket holders who have come to expect the best customer service in all of sports from the D-backs’ Guest Service Representatives will enjoy a newly designed Season Ticket Sales and Service Headquarters at Section 111. This area of the ballpark, created to serve as a one-stop hub for season ticket holders, will feature new flooring, cabinetry and four new video boards that will provide customized messages for D-backs season ticket holders.

All fans will notice seven additional kiosks around the ballpark where they can activate their fan loyalty cards and enter to participate in various popular stadium activities including KachingKo presented by Gila River Casinos and the Circle K Hot Dog Derby. In addition, fans will now be able to sign up for the D-backs Designated Driver Program at any of the 16 kiosks located throughout Chase Field.

In right field, a new Circle K strikeout meter has been installed while other dynamic signage and LED boards will be evident throughout Chase Field.

At merchandise stands throughout the ballpark, fans will find their favorite items from years past, from jerseys and t-shirts to caps and casual wear. An expanded presence of Victoria’s Secret PINK line of products will highlight the new offerings in the main Team Shop on the lower concourse.

Finally, the addition of new technology will help give fans a chance to give back to the community and have the opportunity to win the 50/50 raffle at Chase Field. For every home game, fans can purchase raffle tickets for $2 each, three tickets for $5, seven tickets for $10 and 15 tickets for $20. One lucky fan will take home half the net proceeds from that game’s raffle ticket sales, with the other half benefitting the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation. Fans will be able to watch the 50/50 jackpot total on dbTV, with up-to-the-second updates appearing for the rapidly rising jackpot.
