SLA Offers $200,000 in Grants

The Scottsdale League for the Arts (SLA), the organization that puts on the Scottsdale Culinary Festival each year, announced $200,000 in donations and grants to support local art and arts education programs in 2013-14. Furthermore, the SLA has created a new, more efficient grant application process as part of its yearly call to local non-profits to submit an application for funding, a program which has provided more than $3.7 million in funding since 2002. New for 2013, the SLA has created an online grants application, which will be available in early July at www.leagueforthearts.org. The grant application package must be completed by Thursday, August 8.

“The Scottsdale League for the Arts is pleased to announce the 2013 Scottsdale Culinary Festival was a huge success and we are excited to offer grants ranging in size from $1k to $15k this year,” says Leslie Rycroft, Vice President of the SLA Board of Directors and Grants Committee Chair. To qualify, applicants must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, incorporated and providing services or programs in the arts or art education within Maricopa County. The SLA will entertain applications from a variety of organizations, provided the focus of the project for which funding is requested is directly related to the arts and/or arts education.

Also new for 2013, the League is requesting that all grant seekers submit their financial data to the Cultural Data Project, which offers a unique system that enables arts and cultural organizations to enter financial, programmatic and operational data into a standardized online form. According to Rycroft, “Many grant-making organizations are using the CDP as it gives the funders a great tool to see all the organizations’ data in the same format, and also gives the reporting organizations a beneficial management tool.” What’s more, the CDP is free to arts organizations seeking funding.

The timeline for the SLA’s 2013-14 grants process is as follows. Online grant applications will be available in early July, are due on Thursday, August 8th, and are scheduled to be funded in mid-September 2013.

Arizona Diamondbacks Give Make-A-Wish Arizona $50,000

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation announced that Make-A-Wish Arizona will receive a $50,000 grant from the D-backs as part of the Grand Slam Awards. In addition, Make-A-Wish America will match the D-backs’ $50,000 donation for a total donation of $100,000 to Make-A-Wish Arizona. The donation will be used to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

“We are honored to be able to help fulfill the wishes of children facing life-threatening medical conditions,” said D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall, who also serves as a board member for Make-A-Wish Arizona. “Make-A-Wish has such a profound impact on children here in Arizona and we are proud to support their efforts of fulfilling dreams and providing much needed hope and strength to battle for life.”

Last year, Make-A-Wish Arizona granted wishes for more than 250 children throughout the state of Arizona. Currently, 417 eligible Arizonan children are waiting to have their wishes granted. Therefore, Make-A-Wish Arizona has created a “Summer of Wishes” campaign with the goal of providing 280 wishes by Aug. 31, 2012. The average cost to fulfill a wish is $7,500 and with the $50,000 donation from the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, the D-backs will help fulfill the wishes of nearly seven children.

Make-A-Wish Arizona does not deny wishes to eligible children, and with a 50 percent increase in eligible wish referrals since 2008, it now takes an average of 19 months for a wish to be granted. The goal is to reduce the time to six to nine months and therefore additional funding is needed in order to grant wishes in a timely manner because when a child has a life-threatening medical condition, time is of the essence.

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of Arizona children who 1) have been diagnosed with a progressive, degenerative or malignant condition that has placed the child’s life in jeopardy; 2) are older than 2½ and younger than 18 at the time of referral; and 3) haven’t received a previous wish from a wish-granting organization. Its geographic boundary for service delivery is the state of Arizona and more than 60 percent of the Foundation’s wish kids reside in Maricopa County.

A wish come true empowers children to fight harder against their illnesses. During the wish experience hope suppresses fear, strength supplants submission, and joy replaces despair. Throughout the team’s 14-year history, the Arizona Diamondbacks have fulfilled several wishes for Arizona youth including special experiences at Chase Field, enjoying a D-backs game and meeting D-backs legends such as Luis Gonzalez.

Make-A-Wish Arizona is the third announced recipient of five to receive the Grand Slam Award. Other recipients include A.T. Still University ($50,000), which funded a D-backs themed dental suite, and Kitchen on the Street ($100,000), which funded a mobile kitchen. The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation established the Grand Slam Awards in 2002 to make a larger impact on community organizations by providing a grant for up to $100,000. The grants are made possible by fundraising efforts by the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation.

ArtPlace Grant Will Give Roosevelt Row Arts District A New Look

Roosevelt Row Arts District (RoRo), in the urban core of downtown Phoenix, is a neighborhood on the rise, with unique galleries, restaurants, and shops. A $150,000 grant announced today from ArtPlace will bring an infusion of art and design to the area, defining the neighborhood as a destination for locals and visitors alike.

An “A.R.T.S. Village” – consisting of shipping container studios, performance space, and a new urban market garden – is central to the plan, which also includes hiring a design team to create a vision for the future development of the district and new streetscape design guidelines to visually define the area.

ArtPlace is a new national collaboration of 11 major national and regional foundations, six of the nation’s largest banks, and eight federal agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts, to accelerate creative placemaking across the U.S. To date, ArtPlace has raised almost $50 million to work alongside federal and local governments to transform communities with strategic investments in the arts.

“Across the country, cities and towns are using the arts to help shape their social, physical, and economic characters,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “The arts are a part of everyday life, and I am thrilled to see yet another example of an arts organization working with city, state, and federal offices to help strengthen and revitalize their communities through the arts. It is wonderful that ArtPlace and its funders have recognized this work and invested in it so generously.”

“With this ArtPlace grant, Roosevelt Row is able carry forth projects that help define our community as a vibrant arts district,” said Cindy Dach, Acting Director of the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation. “Since 2001, RoRo has grown to more than 3 dozen shops, galleries and restaurants and has become a real destination. Our work has always been implemented by a small group of dedicated people and volunteers with a vision for a more liveable community. This grant brings us one step closer to turning visions into realities.”

In the early 1940s, numerous businesses were established along Roosevelt Street, the heart of the Roosevelt Row Arts District. In the 1970s, parts of the area were re-zoned, eventually resulting in a downturn in the neighborhood that lasted until the late 1990s. The blighted area was attractive to artists because the boarded-up buildings and former crack houses were affordable for studio and gallery space. The arts were a major factor in the revitalization of the area and crime rates plummeted as more people began to venture into the area to experience the cultural vibrancy.

ArtPlace received almost 2,200 letters of inquiry from organizations seeking a portion of the $15.4 million available for grants in this cycle. Inquiries came from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The 47 projects selected each take a unique and locally-focused approach to creative placemaking, from the creation of a Jazz and Heritage Center in New Orleans’ historic Tremé neighborhood to generate vibrancy and economic growth for the local community to ARTSIPELAGO, a comprehensive revitalization strategy that combines a number of unconnected arts and cultural initiatives in Eastport, Maine for greater effect.

“These projects all exemplify the best in creative placemaking,” explained ArtPlace’s Carol Coletta. “They demonstrate a deep understanding of how smart investments in art, design, and culture as part of a larger portfolio of revitalization strategies can change the trajectory of communities and increase economic opportunities for people.”

In September, ArtPlace will release a new set of metrics to measure changes over time in the people, activity, and real estate value in the communities where ArtPlace has invested with its grants.

Participating foundations include Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Ford Foundation, The James Irvine Foundation, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation, The Robina Foundation, and an anonymous donor. In addition to the NEA, federal partners are the departments of Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Education and Transportation, along with leadership from the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Domestic Policy Council. ArtPlace is also supported by a $12 million loan fund capitalized by six major financial institutions and managed by the Nonprofit Finance Fund. Participating institutions are Bank of America, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Chase, MetLife, and Morgan Stanley

Virginia G. Piper Charitable TrustAwards $3.6 Million In Grants

The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust announced grants totaling more than $3.6 million—funds that will help strengthen Maricopa County communities in the areas of arts and culture, services for disadvantaged children, youth mentoring, healthcare initiatives, and older adults.

“Expanding the Encore Fellows program will allow us to place additional experienced adult professionals within organizations that may not typically be able to afford this level of talent.”

The Trust’s January through March 2012 investments cover a range of programs such as: developing effective new tools for parents of blind children so they may better coordinate multiple, complex services needed to support and educate their children; enhancing the sites of two significant cultural venues—Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden; and expanding the “Encore Fellows” program—a program facilitated by Experience Matters, a nonprofit that capitalizes on the time and talent of older adults (age 50+) seeking paid or unpaid positions that apply their skills to social purposes.

“Baby boomers are hitting retirement ages at a rapid pace, and there is great momentum to capture their interests and talents. Boomers often see retirement as an opportunity to participate and work in new ways that impact social causes they care about,” said Nora Hannah, CEO, Experience Matters. “Expanding the Encore Fellows program will allow us to place additional experienced adult professionals within organizations that may not typically be able to afford this level of talent.”

Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust will be recognized by the National Council on Aging in Washington, D.C. for its work over the last decade in establishing effective public and private partnerships that support the development and care of Maricopa County’s older adults. On Friday, March 30, Piper Trust will receive the Arthur Flemming Award for its leadership in developing initiatives that promote healthy, independent and productive living for older adults. There are 1.1 million people in Maricopa County who are age 50 or older.

“Piper Trust continues to have great foresight in developing civic opportunities for older adults who want to apply their experience to social causes. We commend Piper Trust’s leadership in making the value of older adults a priority. The Trust’s work in aging is a role model for funders throughout the country who want to make a difference for older adults in their communities,” said Jim Firman, president and CEO, National Council on Aging.

Foundation for Blind Children: Develop tools for parents of blind children to navigate complex delivery systems, $120,000.

Gabriel’s Angels: Expand intervention training to partner agency therapists and therapy teams, $215,000.

Improving Chandler Area Neighborhoods: Expand services for Chandler area youth, $560,000.

Science Foundation Arizona: Provide a challenge grant to secure new donors, $250,000.

The Neighborhood Christian Clinic: Add three half-day health clinics, $150,000.

Valle del Sol, Inc.: Renovate office space to create a pediatric clinic and purchase medical equipment, $126,625.

Arizona Town Hall: Support the 100th Arizona Town Hall on civic engagement, $5,000.

Experience Matters Consortium: Support four additional Encore Fellowship positions, $80,000.

Solecito Services, Inc.: Expand service and restore or purchase medical equipment, $44,500.

Valley of the Sun United Way: Support of the Homelessness and Hunger Funders Collaborative project (continuation of Community Relief Grant), $300,000.
