Chillin’ at home: These are some hot design ideas to keep your home cool through the summer

It’s no surprise that many Arizonans cringe at the thought of the inevitable summer
heat. With an average summer temperature wavering around 100 degrees, the
struggle to keep cool can seem impossible. Our homes can now serve as a getawayfrom the scalding summer months, as Arizona’s best designers shared their professional tips and tricks on how to keep any home cool and breezy this season.

Screen Shot 2013-07-12 at 11.00.09 AM

Paint colors

Blues, greens and cool purples are the perfect paint colors to use in order to keep any room looking and feeling light and airy. Amanda Billings of CoCo Milano’s recommends “Mountain Air” by Sherwin Williams if you are looking to try a different shade on your walls. For those of us with white walls, Valerie Borden of Chimera Interior Design suggests
incorporating deep blue, lime green or bright orange accents to keep the space feeling cool and looking hot.

Fabric panelsScreen Shot 2013-07-12 at 11.00.21 AM

If you aren’t going for a total repaint, Jamie Herzlinger, owner of Jamie Herzlinger
Interiors, suggests creating fabric panels for your walls to create a breezy feel and
integrate cool colors into any room. All you have to do is find your favorite summer
material, get it framed, and hang it on your wall as a fabric panel.

Ceiling fans

If you are looking for a stylish ceiling fan to keep a cool breeze flowing throughout your
space, Herzlinger recommends Modern Fan Company. According to Herzlinger,
they make the process of choosing a striking ceiling fan much easier. Borden
recommends their Aurora fan because it not only helps spread the breeze, but also comes with a beautiful up light.

Screen Shot 2013-07-12 at 11.00.38 AM

Windows

In order to keep the heat out but still enjoy your view, roller shades serve as the best option to cover your windows. According to Hart, a 95 percent open roller shade will
tremendously reduce the amount of UV rays entering your home and will noticeably
lower the temperature. For those who prefer draperies, Herzlinger advises lining them with blackout fabric. By lining your drapes you will dramatically decrease the heat that enters your home.

173436124Leather

Despite the belief that leather will leave you sticky and sweaty, it can actually reflect
the temperature of the room. Borden recommends top grain leather, because it is
typically between 12 and 14 percent water and will acclimate to your body temperature. Because leather is an organic material, it can “breathe” easier than most fabrics.

Flooring

It’s not surprising that carpet has a tendency to hold in heat. Instead, Adrienne Hart,
owner of ModaScapes Interior Design, suggests opting for a natural stone orScreen Shot 2013-07-12 at 11.00.46 AM
anything that is naturally porous in order to let air flow through freely. Although,
you do not have to completely eliminate all carpet within your space. “A nice area rug can balance your need for defining a space, good acoustics, and a touch of warmth
within your space,” Billings says. For an outdoor space, one should incorporate sandblasted limestone in a light color, because it does not trap heat, according to Borden. “You can walk barefoot on a 120-degree day and not have to rush to the emergency room,” she says.

Screen Shot 2013-07-12 at 11.00.52 AMNatural Fiber Fabrics

There’s nothing worse than sitting down on your couch and immediately starting to
sweat. Microfiber, better known as polyester, is the worst offender for working up an instantaneous sweat. “You could sweat just from sitting on it, because it is made from oil and oil heats up with friction,” Hart says. Natural fibers, such as cotton, serve as a more breathable alternative. The only downside to natural fibers is their lackluster stain-fighting abilities. But don’t fret, Herzlinger has provided us with the perfect solution— slipcovers. “Slipcovers are ideal because you can use them over and over again, year after year. And they can be washed, so if you have animals and kids, no need to stress!” she says.

JAMIE LOVES in March… Outdoor fabric!

For the next three months I will be writing a series dedicated to Spring and all the great things that come along with this exciting season, especially in Scottsdale. Such as the fabulous weather, cleaning, landscaping and more. So stick around the next couple of months for tips, tricks and more!

Today I will be discussing the best outdoor fabrics to use. Not only are they durable and hold up in any kind of weather, the patterns are gorgeous. Many of my favorite companies to work with now produce stunning fabrics that I often use outdoors as well because they are so durable. Great for clients especially those with pets and children.

Silkworks is a company I have used on many projects. A lot of my projects are done in Arizona and, as we all know, the sun here is harsh. Silk works offers various colors, patterns, textures and more.

Silkworks1 Silkworks2

One of my all time favorite companies to use for furnishings, lighting, fabrics and more is Donghia. They have turned their great eye for design into user-friendly, outdoor fabrics! One of my favorite ways to use outdoor fabrics is making large throw pillows. These are great for when you are hosting a party or just hanging out with your family.

Donghia2 Donghia1

Recently I was working on a project with a client who needed a durable fabric because she had five children as well as a handful of animals. Considering this busy home, accidents do happen, so we decided to use an outdoor fabric from Alaxi Textiles. They do not compromise the look and feel of the fabric just because it is an outdoor material. Many times I tell my client that a particular fabric can be used outdoors and they have a hard time believing me!

Arizona is known for our beautiful weather in the Spring, so you might as well fix up your outdoor living space and enjoy truly living outdoors. Enjoy this season while it lasts!

3 Necessities For An Organized Home And Life

Jamie LOVES in January — an organized home and life.

With the craze of the holiday season over, it’s time to sit back and relax — that is, after all your cleaning and organizing is done. Because, let’s be honest; there are many things that get overlooked and pushed back on your “to do” list. It’s time to enjoy the first month of the New Year by cleaning out your home, and therefore, your mind. Here are some of my favorite necessities for an organized home.

West Elm Modern Weave Storage Bins

Storage bins

Are you like me and have numerous of magazines piled up, but cannot seem to toss them out because you may want to look at them one day? Store your magazines properly by name and year of magazine. Storage bins do not always have to be clear plastic ones; so many companies make ones that look great in your office. West Elm and The Container Store make bins in all shapes, sizes and colors for your organizing pleasures.

Hermes Agenda

Agendas

Because it’s a New Year, that means I get a new agenda! I cannot live without my agenda; I am so busy, it’s hard for me to remember where I have to be. I love the idea that I can just go to the day and see what appointments I have. It’s the best way for me to organize my life. So many of my favorite designers (like Hermès) make beautiful agendas; so do some research and buy your favorite.

Lafayette Chest by Baker Furniture

New dresser

The New Year is a great time to go through your closet and get rid of the items you haven’t worn in over one calendar year. Organize your clothing by buying yourself a new dresser for your bedroom, like this Lafayette Chest by Baker Furniture — and fix up your room while you’re at it!

This chest and others can be purchased through JAMIESHOP.COM.

Enjoy your new organized life and the New Year!

3 Must-Haves For Your Guest Bedroom This Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for family, traditions, parties, eating too much and lots of house guests.

So, do you have your guest bedroom ready? Here are the essentials that every guest bedroom should be stocked with!

guest bedroom tips

Blankets

Nights can be very cold around the holidays. Make sure your guests keep warm while they slumber. Lay a throw blanket out across the foot of the bed prior to their arrival. My favorite blanket for guests is the Hermes Blanket because it is classic and is made of wool and cashmere.

guest bedroom tips

Soaps & Lotions

In the guest bath, be sure to have brand new soaps and lotions. Gift sets are great because they match the scents for you, and the packaging is so nice, they create eye-catching displays. Leave a note for your guests to take home their bath products. They will feel like they just stayed at a five-star hotel.

guest bedroom tips

Fresh Flowers

Be sure to always have an arrangement of fresh flowers placed on the bedside table. Casa Lilies are my all-time favorite. They go with any decor, and the aroma is intoxicating. With such an alluring scent, guests will never want to leave their room.

Enjoy your holiday season my friends; be merry, be happy, be healthy!

Jamie Herzlinger's Top 3 Fall Home Design Trends

Just like in fashion, trends change every season in home design, too. I always pull my inspiration for home designs from the hottest fashion magazines and blogs. This coming fall, I can’t wait to spruce up my home into the trends for this season.

Out of all the fall home design trends, here are my top 3 to incorporate into my home:

home design trends

True Blood

Although I have a tendency to gravitate toward neutral colors, it’s fun to spice things up each season by introducing a new color into my life. This season, red is the color of choice!

Red is such a great color because it has so much depth and richness. An easy way to add this trend into your living space is by adding a few new accessories — like a great oxblood vase, or a beautiful red wool throw-over your bed. Play around with various accessories and have fun!

home design trends

home design trends

Heavily Knitted

Texture has always been my favorite thing to work with when designing a home. I love texture in unexpected places — like a great, crocodile-skin wallpaper.

This year, one of the top trends for fall are boxy, knitted, sculpted sweaters. I really love a great, knitted throw blanket for a bed. It’s a great way to add a lot of texture to a space without spending a lot of money.

home design trends

home design trends

Very Versailles

This gilded, embroidered trend is all over the runways. Luckily for me, I love gilded everything. Ornate and luxe velvets are always fun to have in your home. I love having these rich patterns and materials in my closet and around my home. A fun, gold mirror is always interesting to have in your home; or, bring gilded in with a small crystal box!

Mom Caves, Scottsdale Living Magazine Summer 2012

Mom Caves Provide Women A Place Of Refuge

From special spaces to Pinterest parlors, “mom caves” provide women a place of refuge.

In France from the 17th to early 19th century, like-minded individuals gathered to engage in enlightened conversation, exchanging ideas and thoughts in art, literature music and philosophy. These gatherings, called salons, were hosted by French women and wives with means within rooms called parlors.

Compare this to the 21st century, and surprisingly not too much has changed — except, possibly, the topics discussed. Gatherings are still hosted by women, but the rooms in which they are held are now known by a different — albeit more masculine and seemingly Neanderthal — name: the mom or woman cave.

Mom cave designed by Jamie Herzlinger; Photo: Laura Moss“You would think in the 21st century, we would have evolved a little bit further than this,” says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interiors in Scottsdale. “It has taken a long time in a really odd way that the woman’s parlor has now come back into being a woman’s cave.”

Instead of the word “cave,” Herzlinger suggests this space is an “incredible retreat” and a refuge that reflects one’s taste.

“I think ‘cave’ is really the wrong word to use for the woman,” Herzlinger says. “Do you think of a Christian Louboutin and a fabulous Chanel suit in a cave? No, absolutely not.”

And these spaces specifically for women aren’t an uncommon addition to Scottsdale residences’ homes. In fact, every project Woman cave designed by Susie Crouch.Herzlinger takes on — and her interior design firm works on anywhere from six to 10 projects a year — has a place for the woman to retreat.

“It has come full circle, and I get asked more and more to do these rooms that reflect these women’s personalities solely,” Herzlinger says. “Everyone needs a room to hide out, be by yourself. Have a coffee, have a cocktail, have a tea, have something, but it’s yours. In the midst of chaos, everybody does need their own space. This room is now being identified.”
Todd Raisanen of TraVek, a design-build, home remodeling company in Scottsdale, agrees, adding that these rooms are a relaxing getaway where women can “recharge their (mom) batteries.”

These woman/mom caves have several purposes and uses. According to the TraVek team, the spaces they’ve built have been, more or less, rooms women have wanted for crafts, hobbies and spas.

“They are rooms with lots of closets or cabinet space, lots of countertop space and a work area for their sewing machines or scrapping or jewelry-making — whatever it may be. The women go here to just relax, work on their hobbies.”

Mom cave essentials include a television; desks, tables or computer areas; and comfortable seating, “so the girls can hang out,” Herzlinger adds. But what’s important is that this room reflects one’s taste and personality.

“You know how people say they have an alter ego? Their room is their alter ego,” Herzlinger says. “It’s like looking at a woman in blue jeans and finding out she’s wearing the hottest, sexiest La Perla underwear. That’s her alter ego — which is actually taking a physical space in the house.”

Herzlinger goes on to add that there are as many styles for women’s rooms as there are shoes in the Barney’s shoe department.

“It runs the gamut, and it has everything to do with total individuality, and it has nothing to do with the overall theme of what exists in the house,” she adds.

While it may be apparent the differences between the man and woman cave, two similarities exist: one, they’re both used to relax; and two, men and women occupy their respective rooms to take part in their hobbies.

The TraVek team says men typically like to have a place to hang out with their buddies, with the room equipped with a smoking area and/or bar and between two and four large TVs, Herzlinger adds, to watch the game. It’s a place to raise a ruckus and not disturb the rest of the house, the TraVek team says.

As for the look of the room, Raisenan says man caves are more expensive; they’re darker and noisier, so you may have to soundproof. Women caves, on the other hand, have brighter colors and are quieter, he adds.

Herzlinger agrees and says women’s rooms are light and interesting, and usually include a 42” TV.

“The look is more feminine with more pastels and neutral color palettes,” Herzlinger adds. “These rooms are much more about comfortable seating and small tables to put down your glass of wine.”

Whether you decide to use the space to start your next DIY project found on Pinterest, or invite your girlfriends over to enjoy a glass of Chardonnay and catch the latest episode of “The Real Housewives of (take your pick),” the space is yours to transform — so have fun with the design of it, and more importantly, with what you do in it.

JAMIE LOVES In August: Wallpaper!

JAMIE LOVES in August…Wallpaper!

jamie loves augustFor every project I work on, one of my favorite parts is picking out the wallpaper. There are so many amazing wallpaper companies that come out with new wallpapers every season. From silks, to grass cloths, to leathers — this is not your grandmother’s wallpaper anymore.

One of my favorite wallpapers of all time has been the fish wallpaper from de Gournay. This hand-painted wallpaper company specializes in reproductions of historic prints. Most of the paper is inspired from 18th century chinoiserie and 18th century French designs. The fish is my favorite for many different reasons; I love fish whether they are in a bathroom, or even in the kitchen. And, it’s sophisticated, yet not too serious.jamie loves august

Grass cloth is my all-time favorite type of wallpaper to use. I love how grass cloth adds not only color to a space, but also amazing texture. Grass cloth can warm up a space and can be used in an elegant or casual setting. There are so many amazing companies out there that make gorgeous grass cloths; from Philip Jefferies and Dedar to Thibaut and Zoffany, it’s a blast going through the endless choices.

Enjoy your walls, explore the world of wallpaper, and don’t be afraid to try something new in your home.

JAMIE LOVES: June 2012

JAMIE LOVES in June …

Fast home fixes that go a long way!

Summer is a great time to try new things in your life and in your home. Here are a couple of things you can do to make big changes in your home:

Jame Loves: June 2012Lucite living

I love using Lucite chairs in any style of home. Whether it be modern, traditional or eclectic, Lucite chairs are great! My favorite area to use these fun “ghost-like” chairs is in the kitchen or eating area of the home.

I love them especially if you have little ones that make a mess; you don’t have to worry about them getting stained or damaged. You can wipe them down with a cloth to clean them after use. They are also great in small spaces because you can see right through them!

Jamie LovesPrimping the powder room

One of my favorite rooms in a house has always been the powder room. I love it because it is such a small space that you can experiment and try new things there first to see how you like it.

It’s fun to buy a new mirror or accessories. I always love using a crazy wallpaper or painting the walls something different than the rest of the home. It’s great to design the powder room to make it the jewel box of your home.

Jamie LovesFun & funky furniture

During summer, everyone spends a lot of time lounging by the pool and being outside. So make sure your outdoor furniture is not only durable, but make sure it’s fun! I love mixing and matching patterns, color and even brands. Don’t be afraid — outdoors is where we all have fun; let your outdoor furniture have fun, too!

Enjoy your home and your surroundings.

JAMIE LOVES in May…

Summer Bohemian!

I am so excited that summer is here! Summertime is all about neutrals — neutral cloths, neutral makeup, neutral home furnishing and accessories. Neutrals make for a great color palette in Arizona because it’s like a breath of fresh air in this summer heat.

In the summer, I love nothing more than summer bohemian style; mix and match your life — summer is all about having fun and taking chances!

Summertime Shopping

Healy Bee and Magnolia

Healy Bee, JAMIE LOVESTwo of my favorite hot spots for great summer outfits are Healy Bee and Magnolia. Healy Bee and Magnolia are both chic boutiques; instead of going through countless racks of cloths at department stores, I love knowing that I am going to like everything in both boutiques because they carry all my favorite brands!

Because of the heat in the summer, I love nothing more than to throw on a lightweight, airy top with shorts and a great pair of strappy sandals; slick my hair back, and I’m good to go!

Spring is the perfect time to go through your home and get rid of all the stuff you don’t need. Revamp the style of your home this spring; make it a place you love to be.

Incorporate the spring trends into your home with just a few simple steps.

JAMIE LOVES: April 2012Flooring

When I am looking for flooring in Scottsdale, I head to Floor Styles or The Flooring Collection. They carry all my favorite flooring manufacturers. Right now I am in love with pastel-colored carpet; it’s fresh and fun without bringing too much attention to the floors.

If you want to transform your space without much effort, try changing out your draperies. Take down harsh, heavy fabric, and add something bright and airy. JAMIE LOVES: March 2012

JAMIE Loves in March…

Spring!

I am so excited that spring is here! One of my favorite things about March is Spring Break. Unfortunately, I am always super busy with work in March and therefore cannot go anywhere too far. Lucky for me, I live in one of the best cities, full of activities, amazing hotels, spas, restaurants, shopping and more. So this month I will be taking a “staycation” where I will relax here in Scottsdale. I will be staying at one of my favorite hotels, golfing at one of my favorite courses, and eating at one of my favorite restaurants.

The Royal Palms

JAMIE LOVES: March 2012There are so many amazing resorts from which to choose; this month I will be staying at The Royal Palms. For one, I love the location; it’s right on the base of Camelback Mountain, so the views are breathtaking. Secondly, I love the intimate setting of the resort; you feel at home here. And lastly, I cannot deny a great spa! A massage and facial is just what I need on my “staycation.”

Desert Botanical Garden

JAMIE LOVES: March 2012One of my favorite places to visit in Arizona is the Desert Botanical Garden, and springtime is the best time to visit the gardens — the wild flowers are blooming, and the cacti are so green! In collaboration with Ballet Arizona, the Desert Botanical Gardens brings Topia. The dancers perform with the backdrop of the red rocks as the sun sets. This event goes from March 2-March 26th, so get your tickets now on the Desert Botanical Garden website.

Tarbell’s

JAMIE LOVES: March 2012There are so many talented chefs living in Arizona; one of my favorites is Mark Tarbell and his restaurant Tarbell’s. I love the atmosphere and the people there. Not to mention, the food is super tasty; one of my personal favorite dishes is the grilled organic salmon. This plate with a good glass of wine and great company, there is no better way to enjoy my “staycation.”

JAMIE LOVES: December 2011

JAMIE LOVES in December…

As I was working on getting my holiday shopping done, I had the pleasure of visiting with my long time friend and owner of Valerianne, Greg Harper. He has just moved his store into a beautiful new chic boutique by Arcadia Farms in downtown Scottsdale. I have known Greg for more than 15 years; it is refreshing to have his fabulous eye bringing us all the beautiful pieces he has.JAMIE Loves: DB Home, Ice Cream Bowl

So, of course, I started my holiday shopping with a little something for myself! What could be better than a new set of gorgeous goose down sleeping pillows. Cloud Nine, all Polish goose down with Egyptian cotton ticking, are my favorite! I love the potential to make all your bad nightmares from 2011 be thrown out with old pillows!

Dbo Ware Pedestal Dessert Bowls

The chicest design in tabletop is to mix up your salad and dessert plates. I found an amazing addition to any dish set you have. DB Home, designed by the artist Dana Brandwein, is making the hottest white bisque pottery ice cream bowl, $175, which doubles as a trifle bowl mousse or even a great candy or nut dish.JAMIE LOVES: Valerianne, French milled soaps

And for all those holiday parties, my favorite hostess gifts this December are…

Cire Trudon

This fabulous candle is a frequent purchase of mine! My favorite scents for December are Abd El Kader and La Marquise for this winter weather!

Soaps, soaps, soaps!

Valerianne has an incredible collection of French milled soaps, which last forever! I am tired of seeing soap pumps in powder rooms; mix it up with different shapes, sizes and scents!
