JAMIE LOVES IN APRIL… SPRING HOME

Following up with last month’s column, I am giving you tips and tricks to make your home fresh and new for spring!

foyer2-011Paint it black

If you are looking for a fresh and elegant look for your home, then the answer is simple- paint all your interior doors black! If your doors are in good condition and good quality, paint them in semi-gloss paint. But if you are worried of showing the flaws, then I would suggest painting with a satin finish paint. Benjamin Moore or Farrow and Ball are my favorite paint companies to turn to when looking for the right black. Quick tip — leave the surround or casing of the door your wall color.

ContainersClean your counters

Put away your toaster, hide the microwave and for all those items you want to leave out on the counter, find attractive containers to put them in. For example, if you use your sugar or flour find a beautiful set of glass containers or white modern containers to store them in. Try these glass containers from Ateriors Home for a clean look, available through jamieshop.com.

PullChange your hardware

Are you wanting to update your kitchen, but don’t have the time or money to go through an entire renovation? I have an easy solution for you. Change out all the hardware on your cabinetry. It’s an easy way to update the look of your kitchen with little effort. Try something new like polished nickel knobs, or clear glass knobs! I personally am in love with these pulls from Sherle Wagner. Visit jamieshop.com for more hardware choices!

Enjoy your spring cleaning!

3 Necessities For An Organized Home And Life

Jamie LOVES in January — an organized home and life.

With the craze of the holiday season over, it’s time to sit back and relax — that is, after all your cleaning and organizing is done. Because, let’s be honest; there are many things that get overlooked and pushed back on your “to do” list. It’s time to enjoy the first month of the New Year by cleaning out your home, and therefore, your mind. Here are some of my favorite necessities for an organized home.

West Elm Modern Weave Storage Bins

Storage bins

Are you like me and have numerous of magazines piled up, but cannot seem to toss them out because you may want to look at them one day? Store your magazines properly by name and year of magazine. Storage bins do not always have to be clear plastic ones; so many companies make ones that look great in your office. West Elm and The Container Store make bins in all shapes, sizes and colors for your organizing pleasures.

Hermes Agenda

Agendas

Because it’s a New Year, that means I get a new agenda! I cannot live without my agenda; I am so busy, it’s hard for me to remember where I have to be. I love the idea that I can just go to the day and see what appointments I have. It’s the best way for me to organize my life. So many of my favorite designers (like Hermès) make beautiful agendas; so do some research and buy your favorite.

Lafayette Chest by Baker Furniture

New dresser

The New Year is a great time to go through your closet and get rid of the items you haven’t worn in over one calendar year. Organize your clothing by buying yourself a new dresser for your bedroom, like this Lafayette Chest by Baker Furniture — and fix up your room while you’re at it!

This chest and others can be purchased through JAMIESHOP.COM.

Enjoy your new organized life and the New Year!

Jamie LOVES: Bookshelves!

3 Tips For Your Bookshelves: Movement, Display And Color

Jamie LOVES in December … bookshelves!

I have an extensive collection of books in both my home and office. I love collecting books from trips that I take from all around the world and from my favorite designers for inspiration. My collection is also comprised of books that I have received as gifts over the years.

Books should never be stagnant; I think of them as having a life of their own. Unless you are in a public library, after books have been taken off the shelf and read, they are rarely placed back in the same location. Bookshelves should lend themselves to this type of environment. They should be loose and open to change.

Bookshelves: Create Movement

Create movement

It is quite common when clients ask what to do with their bookshelves. Many people think that they should have a tight bookshelf, packed with books lined up vertically.  This could not be further from the truth. Create movement on a bookshelf by clustering books and leaving some space in between. Stack books horizontally and even lean a book.  By doing this, you are not only creating a visual rhythm, but you are not pressured to go out and purchase a ton of books just to fill your shelves.

Bookshelves

On display

I often walk into a home and see empty shelves because many people are not sure what to do with bookshelves if they do not collect books. Even if you are not a book collector, you can use the shelving to display your favorite home accessories, such as candle sticks, decanters or family photos. Use the few books you do own, and mix them in.

Another trick that can make a sparse shelf look full is by adding a mirror to the back panel.  The mirror will not only reflect the items you have but also reflect the entire room, almost making the shelf itself disappear.

bookshelves

Add color

In order to keep your shelves from looking too messy or cluttered, consider trying to stick to one color or tone of colors. Like in this photo, I mostly decorated with gold accessories.  If you have an array of books, try grouping them by size or by color to maintain order. If you really want to have some fun, try painting your bookshelves a dark color and filling them with all white books and accessories!

Enjoy your bookshelves; don’t be afraid to mix it up, and try new things!

3 Must-Haves For Your Guest Bedroom This Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for family, traditions, parties, eating too much and lots of house guests.

So, do you have your guest bedroom ready? Here are the essentials that every guest bedroom should be stocked with!

guest bedroom tips

Blankets

Nights can be very cold around the holidays. Make sure your guests keep warm while they slumber. Lay a throw blanket out across the foot of the bed prior to their arrival. My favorite blanket for guests is the Hermes Blanket because it is classic and is made of wool and cashmere.

guest bedroom tips

Soaps & Lotions

In the guest bath, be sure to have brand new soaps and lotions. Gift sets are great because they match the scents for you, and the packaging is so nice, they create eye-catching displays. Leave a note for your guests to take home their bath products. They will feel like they just stayed at a five-star hotel.

guest bedroom tips

Fresh Flowers

Be sure to always have an arrangement of fresh flowers placed on the bedside table. Casa Lilies are my all-time favorite. They go with any decor, and the aroma is intoxicating. With such an alluring scent, guests will never want to leave their room.

Enjoy your holiday season my friends; be merry, be happy, be healthy!

Love,

JAMIE LOVES: How To Put Together A Home Gym

JAMIE LOVES in October… learning how to put together a home gym.

Once the children leave for college, or the spare bedroom doesn’t get any more use, many people find themselves turning the extra space into home gyms. But how does one make a home gym feel like a real gym and not just a bedroom with a treadmill in it? Let’s learn together!

Basement Gym, Photo: Rob Karosis, houzz.comMirror, Mirror

Mirrors are not only important so you can watch your form, but they also reflect the light around the room and make your gym look larger. Do not to just hang the mirror on the wall, but frame it out to add beauty and warmth. You want your gym to be a place that you want to be. If the space isn’t inviting, you won’t use it. Paint the walls a color you enjoy, hang art, even add a chandelier if there’s room!

Home Gym, Port Bristol Custom, Photo: houzz.comWell-Equipped

Only buy equipment that you know you plan on using. Don’t buy the latest Chuck Norris-endorsed product just because it looks cool. Ask yourself, “How often do I plan on using the piece?” It is important to plan before you buy, create an outline of the equipment on the floor with blue tape before you purchase, and make sure there is enough room in your space to use it properly.Home Gym, Port Washington Residence, Photo: houzz.com

From the Ground Up

When considering flooring, keep in mind that it is best to have something that both gives and absorbs shock, like hardwood floors. If you have to install new floors, opt for a raised and cushioned floor. There are other options out there as well, like cork and vinyl; or, if you are feeling “green,” you can get recycled rubber floor made from old tires.

Preventing Clutter

Storage is key when designing a home gym; make sure there is adequate space for items like towels, yoga mats and such. If you don’t have a lot of floor space, shelving is always an option.

Enjoy your home gym!

Jamie Herzlinger's Top 3 Fall Home Design Trends

Just like in fashion, trends change every season in home design, too. I always pull my inspiration for home designs from the hottest fashion magazines and blogs. This coming fall, I can’t wait to spruce up my home into the trends for this season.

Out of all the fall home design trends, here are my top 3 to incorporate into my home:

home design trends

True Blood

Although I have a tendency to gravitate toward neutral colors, it’s fun to spice things up each season by introducing a new color into my life. This season, red is the color of choice!

Red is such a great color because it has so much depth and richness. An easy way to add this trend into your living space is by adding a few new accessories — like a great oxblood vase, or a beautiful red wool throw-over your bed. Play around with various accessories and have fun!

home design trends

home design trends

Heavily Knitted

Texture has always been my favorite thing to work with when designing a home. I love texture in unexpected places — like a great, crocodile-skin wallpaper.

This year, one of the top trends for fall are boxy, knitted, sculpted sweaters. I really love a great, knitted throw blanket for a bed. It’s a great way to add a lot of texture to a space without spending a lot of money.

home design trends

home design trends

Very Versailles

This gilded, embroidered trend is all over the runways. Luckily for me, I love gilded everything. Ornate and luxe velvets are always fun to have in your home. I love having these rich patterns and materials in my closet and around my home. A fun, gold mirror is always interesting to have in your home; or, bring gilded in with a small crystal box!

JAMIE LOVES In August: Wallpaper!

JAMIE LOVES in August…Wallpaper!

jamie loves augustFor every project I work on, one of my favorite parts is picking out the wallpaper. There are so many amazing wallpaper companies that come out with new wallpapers every season. From silks, to grass cloths, to leathers — this is not your grandmother’s wallpaper anymore.

One of my favorite wallpapers of all time has been the fish wallpaper from de Gournay. This hand-painted wallpaper company specializes in reproductions of historic prints. Most of the paper is inspired from 18th century chinoiserie and 18th century French designs. The fish is my favorite for many different reasons; I love fish whether they are in a bathroom, or even in the kitchen. And, it’s sophisticated, yet not too serious.jamie loves august

Grass cloth is my all-time favorite type of wallpaper to use. I love how grass cloth adds not only color to a space, but also amazing texture. Grass cloth can warm up a space and can be used in an elegant or casual setting. There are so many amazing companies out there that make gorgeous grass cloths; from Philip Jefferies and Dedar to Thibaut and Zoffany, it’s a blast going through the endless choices.

Enjoy your walls, explore the world of wallpaper, and don’t be afraid to try something new in your home.

JAMIE LOVES In July: Paint Your Toes & Your Walls

JAMIE LOVES in July…

Inspired: Paint your toes. Paint your walls.

I recently came across a beautiful ad for toe nail polish, and I was instantly was inspired to paint the walls of my house the same tone.

Painting walls in your home is easy, so why not change it with the seasons?

Pale green

JAMIE LOVES July 2012

Green has always been one of my favorite colors for every season, especially in the summer. A pale green hue is calming and looks cool. I recently painted a guest bedroom on one of my projects, and it turned out fabulous! I found this nail color to match it, and I can’t wait to try it out on my toes! JAMIE LOVES July 2012

White

JAMIE LOVES July 2012

Who said white walls are boring? White walls are my favorite because they are a crisp, blank canvas for art or photos. White is the hardest color to find just the right hue. Sometimes the white will have pink undertones, or even blue undertones, but this white is the perfect, true white. Nothing looks hotter than tan skin with white nails. Essie makes a beautiful shade of white. JAMIE LOVES July 2012

Soft grey

JAMIE LOVES July 2012

A soft grey is great for every season. There is something that is so relaxing about soft grey. I love using grey for any style of home; it makes the perfect back drop for any room ― whether it’s modern, eclectic, traditional or romantic. Soft grey nails are always in vogue, and they go great with any outfit. JAMIE LOVES July 2012

Enjoy painting your walls and nails. But remember; paint your nails after you paint the walls! Otherwise you will destroy a great manicure.

Love,

JAMIE LOVES

JAMIE LOVES: June 2012

JAMIE LOVES in June …

Fast home fixes that go a long way!

Summer is a great time to try new things in your life and in your home. Here are a couple of things you can do to make big changes in your home:

Jame Loves: June 2012Lucite living

I love using Lucite chairs in any style of home. Whether it be modern, traditional or eclectic, Lucite chairs are great! My favorite area to use these fun “ghost-like” chairs is in the kitchen or eating area of the home.

I love them especially if you have little ones that make a mess; you don’t have to worry about them getting stained or damaged. You can wipe them down with a cloth to clean them after use. They are also great in small spaces because you can see right through them!

Jamie LovesPrimping the powder room

One of my favorite rooms in a house has always been the powder room. I love it because it is such a small space that you can experiment and try new things there first to see how you like it.

It’s fun to buy a new mirror or accessories. I always love using a crazy wallpaper or painting the walls something different than the rest of the home. It’s great to design the powder room to make it the jewel box of your home.

Jamie LovesFun & funky furniture

During summer, everyone spends a lot of time lounging by the pool and being outside. So make sure your outdoor furniture is not only durable, but make sure it’s fun! I love mixing and matching patterns, color and even brands. Don’t be afraid — outdoors is where we all have fun; let your outdoor furniture have fun, too!

Enjoy your home and your surroundings.

Love,

JAMIE LOVES: May 2012

JAMIE LOVES in May…

Summer Bohemian!

I am so excited that summer is here! Summertime is all about neutrals — neutral cloths, neutral makeup, neutral home furnishing and accessories. Neutrals make for a great color palette in Arizona because it’s like a breath of fresh air in this summer heat.

In the summer, I love nothing more than summer bohemian style; mix and match your life — summer is all about having fun and taking chances!

Summertime Shopping

Healy Bee and Magnolia

Healy Bee, JAMIE LOVESTwo of my favorite hot spots for great summer outfits are Healy Bee and Magnolia. Healy Bee and Magnolia are both chic boutiques; instead of going through countless racks of cloths at department stores, I love knowing that I am going to like everything in both boutiques because they carry all my favorite brands!

Because of the heat in the summer, I love nothing more than to throw on a lightweight, airy top with shorts and a great pair of strappy sandals; slick my hair back, and I’m good to go!

BungalowBungalow is a great place for your furnishing needs and home accessories. They carry all my favorite bohemian styles. Their inventory is constantly changing, so it’s a great place to pop in as much as you can. In the summer, I love doing a room in all off-whites with layered rugs covering the floor.

For the home: The Willows

The WillowsSummer bohemian is so much fun because you can mix and match fun things that you find through your summer travels. If you want to check out great home accessories and maybe some accessories for yourself, head over to The Willows. I have been going here for years, and I love their fun, laid-back style. It’s a great place for those “found” pieces for your home — from a funky candle holder to a really cool lamp. They have it all!

JAMIE LOVES: April 2012

JAMIE LOVES in April…

Spring cleaning!

Spring is the perfect time to go through your home and get rid of all the stuff you don’t need. Revamp the style of your home this spring; make it a place you love to be.

Incorporate the spring trends into your home with just a few simple steps.

Bring spring colors into your home by adding a new rug or new carpet, and clean up your space with new draperies. Once you are satisfied with your home, it’s time to treat yourself with a fresh bouquet of springtime flowers!

JAMIE LOVES: April 2012Flooring

When I am looking for flooring in Scottsdale, I head to Floor Styles or The Flooring Collection. They carry all my favorite flooring manufacturers. Right now I am in love with pastel-colored carpet; it’s fresh and fun without bringing too much attention to the floors.

JAMIE LOVES: April 2012

Draperies

If you want to transform your space without much effort, try changing out your draperies. Take down harsh, heavy fabric, and add something bright and airy. Just by changing your draperies you will be surprised how much your space will change! One of my favorite places to shop for fun, new fabrics is at Dean Warren. They always have the latest fabrics and are so knowledgeable on various kinds of fabrics, patterns and trims.

JAMIE LOVES: April 2012Flowers

Fresh flowers are my favorite, especially in the spring. Fresh flowers have the ability to brighten up any space with little effort. I love keeping flowers, so when I enter my home I am welcomed by that beautiful floral scent. My favorite place to buy great flower arrangements is White House Flowers, they always have the freshest flowers, and their designs are fun and sophisticated!

I hope you all enjoy this April and enjoy the spring. Before we know it, we will be in the triple digits!

JAMIE LOVES: Hiking Arizona

JAMIE LOVES: February 2012

JAMIE LOVES in February…

Being outside!

The average temperature in Scottsdale for the month of February is 74 degrees of perfection. Blue skies above our heads, white fluffy clouds — life is good in Arizona!

Because the weather is just about perfect, and because I made a resolution to health, I like to spend as much time as I can outdoors. I am so excited for the weekends to come so I can do my Saturday ritual. I like to wake up bright and early and head to a mountain for a beautiful hike. Some days I love the challenge of Camelback Mountain, and others days I love the leisure of Quartz Ridge. Either way, after a hike I deserve a nice meal, so it’s off to brunch! Then I am ready for whatever the weekend has in store for me!

I love Camelback Mountain because it is maintained to perfection and everyone you see on the trail is so friendly. I personally like to challenge myself by parking my car at the Echo trail head, which is located right off McDonald, and start up the mountain there.

Once I am at the top, I admire the amazing view and breathe in the fresh, desert air. Instead of going back down the trail I came up, I prefer to hike down Cholla, which ends at East Cholla Way and Invergordon, and I run around back to where my car is parked. Some days this is easier than others, but no matter what it makes for a great challenge.

JAMIE LOVES: Chelsea's KitchenSometimes I like to hike with my girlfriends or daughters, so I love to go on Quartz Ridge, located on 32nd and Lincoln. I love this hike because it’s not too challenging, yet you still get a great workout!

After my morning workout, it is time to treat myself to some great food and coffee at Chelsea’s Kitchen. I love sitting outside on their beautiful patio enjoying the sun while eating the classic French omelet, which includes sautéed spinach, mushrooms and fresh herbs.

Enjoy!

Love,
Jamie

JAMIE LOVES: December 2011

JAMIE LOVES in December…

As I was working on getting my holiday shopping done, I had the pleasure of visiting with my long time friend and owner of Valerianne, Greg Harper. He has just moved his store into a beautiful new chic boutique by Arcadia Farms in downtown Scottsdale. I have known Greg for more than 15 years; it is refreshing to have his fabulous eye bringing us all the beautiful pieces he has.JAMIE Loves: DB Home, Ice Cream Bowl

So, of course, I started my holiday shopping with a little something for myself! What could be better than a new set of gorgeous goose down sleeping pillows. Cloud Nine, all Polish goose down with Egyptian cotton ticking, are my favorite! I love the potential to make all your bad nightmares from 2011 be thrown out with old pillows!

Dbo Ware Pedestal Dessert Bowls

The chicest design in tabletop is to mix up your salad and dessert plates. I found an amazing addition to any dish set you have. DB Home, designed by the artist Dana Brandwein, is making the hottest white bisque pottery ice cream bowl, $175, which doubles as a trifle bowl mousse or even a great candy or nut dish.JAMIE LOVES: Valerianne, French milled soaps

And for all those holiday parties, my favorite hostess gifts this December are…

Cire Trudon

This fabulous candle is a frequent purchase of mine! My favorite scents for December are Abd El Kader and La Marquise for this winter weather!

Soaps, soaps, soaps!

Valerianne has an incredible collection of French milled soaps, which last forever! I am tired of seeing soap pumps in powder rooms; mix it up with different shapes, sizes and scents!

JAMIE LOVES: Tusian Artist TowelsTunisian hand towels

Another beautiful hostess gift are these beautiful hand towels designed by a Tunisian artist. They are made of cotton linen blends, hand tied fringe and are available in a variety of colors and patterns.
