Did you know that John H. Hammergren is the highest paid CEO, making $131,190,000 per year for McKesson? In fact, the top 15 CEOs all make more than $40M annually. While this fuels the continuing debate over income inequality in America, there is also a growing shift towards tying CEO pay to company performance.

Here are a few examples from the graphic:

  • After peaking in 2007, CEO compensation has fallen, though still double then what it was in the 1980s
  • 6 in 10: Companies in Standard and Poors 1500-stock index tie performance to equity awards – up from just 2 in 10 in 2002
