Haunted Boutique Resort Offering Ghost Tours

As one of the oldest resorts in the Valley with a rich cowboy history dating back to the 1930’s, it’s only natural that The Hermosa Inn would be home to a few friendly spirits still wandering the grounds. From original owner, cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, to a “Pink Lady” on a bridge and unexplained moving objects, this luxury boutique resort is now offering a Hermosa Hauntings package, where guests will receive two creepy cocktails from Last Drop at the Hermosa upon arrival, in addition to a guided ghost tour of the property.

“While we have accumulated quite a few ghost stories over the years, all the spirits that have been encountered seem to be quite friendly,” said Managing Director Michael Gildersleeve. “With so much interest from guests over the decades – and even more so in recent years with the popularity of rivaling ghost hunting shows on television – we thought it fitting to offer a package that gets our guests into the holiday spirit, and maybe even allows them to have an experience of their own with an on-property spirit.”

Valid October 1 – November 3, 2013 and starting from $246/night, the Hermosa Hauntings package includes an overnight stay, two creepy cocktails – Last Drop’s “Eye for an Eye” (recipe here) – upon arrival, and a guided ghost tour through the property.

Ghost stories that have been reported from throughout the Inn include the following:

Closing the Door
Apparently Lon likes the doors shut. A maid actually quit after having doors shut on their own multiple times while she was cleaning the guest casitas.

A Pat on the Head
A guest came into the restaurant to show her friends some of Lon Megargee’s original artwork that hangs in Last Drop (the portion of the Hermosa Inn that was Lon’s original art studio and residence). The host showed them the way, walked in the other room, had his hands full and when he came back to the guests (still with both hands full) the woman was looking up in the air. Our host asked what she was looking at, or if the roof was leaking from the rainy day, and she said “No, you just patted me on the head.” He assured her that he did not, as his hands were full.

Cowboy in the Mirror
Yet another maid quit her job at The Hermosa Inn; this time due to the reflection of a cowboy that appeared in the mirror behind her. When she turned around, no one was there.

Lady in Pink
Multiple guests have asked “Who is that lady in the pink gown walking over the bridge by the pool?” While we don’t know who she might be, a lady in a floor-length flowing pink gown (something not of this time period) does appear to guests in the late hours of the night or early mornings as she walks across the bridge.

Lon Did It
Oftentimes candlesticks will somehow fall out of their candlestick holders and other objects seem to move on their own or be misplaced. Decorations on the host stand have been “pushed” off, and a host was talking to a guest at the bar when a bottle of tequila flew off the shelf and broke multiple glasses. The staff will often joke “Oh, Lon must have done that!”

Kids at Play
One of the restaurant’s evening dishwashers refuses to work alone at night because she has seen children of times passed playing out in the parking lot upon leaving at 1 or 2 in the morning, in addition to seeing the Pink Lady mentioned above.

Spirits in the Cellar
When workers were doing construction in the underground wine cellar of LON’s, they had left various tools in disarray and went upstairs to get something. When they came back down, all their tools had been neatly placed in a row. There have also been accounts of doors opening/closing and lights going on and off.

75 Never Looked So Good

Next time it’s your birthday, invite the world famous Dale Chihuly to come. That’s exactly what the Desert Botanical Garden is doing to commemorate its 75th anniversary. Credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from the realm of craft to fine art, Chihuly has long held a love affair with the Sonoran Desert. And now he’s putting that love affair on display for the second time at DBG during Chihuly in the Garden. The exhibit blends the distinct shapes and colors of the desert region – think agave plants and the bold and brilliant sun – with Chihuly’s signature touches like brightly adorned glass balls in wooden boats. Behold Chihuly’s brilliant ability to weave his ornate pieces of art into the garden’s 50,000 indigenous plants including the iconic saguaro, cholla cactus and palo verde November 9, 2013 – May 18, 2014. The last exhibit, which ran in late 2008 and early 2009 attracted more than 550,000 over six months.

Wild West Lassoes New Cowboy Joints

Sure Scottsdale is nicknamed “The West’s Most Western Town,” but today the scene is more old west meets new west and a bit more Miranda Lambert than John Wayne. Two new modern-day saloons are adding to the collection of more than 80 hotspots in downtown, dubbed a “desert version of Miami’s South Beach” by The New York Times. The Western swung open its wooden doors with its name written in chalk on April 25, 2013. This honky-tonk is all about local country bands, home-style grub and whiskey cocktails with a cool western meets modern motif as the backdrop – think old church pews, a faux-leather bar, iron bar stools and a well-worn couch.

Just down the street, Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row made its debut on Independence Day as a 1920s-style saloon with a new country vibe and live tunes from national and local acts performing on a stage hanging from the ceiling directly above the bar. The owner, Bentley, who just so happens to be a Grammy-nominated country star and Phoenix native, is bringing a taste of the South to the desert with a comfort-food menu with items such as shrimp and fritters, fried pickles and BBQ grilled chicken chockfull of local ingredients. Self-serve beer and liquor on tap will quench any cowboy’s thirst.

Where can you get a satay daging beef skewer for dinner and a s’mores sandwich for dessert? Look no further than the Food Truck Caravan in downtown Scottsdale, which takes place each Saturday from 7:30 – 11:30 p.m. Featuring eight or more gourmet trucks from foodie havens such as Grilled Cheese Truck, Liberty Biscuits, Satay Hut, Spice It Up, Stickaberry, SuperFarm Food Truck and Udder Delights, expect everything from Southern comfort food and organic sliders to curriesand classic diner cuisine. Step in the 2,000-square-foot gallery in downtown and encounter artists such as Dave Bigelow, whose starkly beautiful crosses are carved locally in a small woodshop; Wyatt Moody, whose sculptures tell the story of mankind’s journey and connectedness to the Earth; and Sherry Herradence, whose mixed media prints depict her fascination with bold colors, flowers and the four seasons. Top Hospitality Trends in 2013

Gone are the days of the “staycation.” Guests are craving function over flourish, and intimate spaces rather than overbearing enclaves. The hospitality trends of 2013 are all about comfort, simplicity and high-quality experiences.

While it changes with the year, and the economy, the trends we’re seeing now are showing that the majority of people are leaving the recession behind, putting a focus on the value of travel and are looking to purchase an experience rather than an item. Below is a glimpse of what 2013 will hold for hoteliers, restaurateurs and travelers alike.

Top Hospitality Trends in 2013

Cozy vs. cutting edge

It’s no longer about which designer worked with a hotel to give it that cutting-edge design, statement furniture and bright color scheme. In our ever-busy day-to-day lives, people are craving comfort and cozy spaces, rather than a “cool” space with no functionality. Take, for example, the lush leather couches that adorn the casitas and are placed throughout Last Drop at the Hermosa; they provide a feeling of warmth and comfort, rather than being a piece of furniture that is meant to be looked at, instead of used.

Locavores unite

While celebrity chefs have come to the forefront of the hospitality industry — and TV screens — across America, guests are becoming more and more concerned with the food itself, rather than a creative presentation from a big name. The locavore movement that focuses on everything that is locally produced, raised and grown, will be — if it’s not already — a major component of the culinary mission for resort restaurants. As we have already begun here at LON’s at the Hermosa, the property’s one-acre garden provides the majority of herbs, citrus and vegetables, which are used in the LON’s kitchen, in addition to those supplied from local farmers.

Quality of experience

There is an air of optimism among guests, and 2013 is looking to be a year where travelers are back to doing exactly that: traveling. Say “goodbye” to staycations, as most people are now beginning to place a higher value on splurging in order to get a high-quality experience and a stress-free trip, rather than an item. Whether the recession shed a light on the unimportance of having more “stuff” than the next guy, I’m not sure; but there has been a shift, and the value of travel is only going up.

Personal connections

As a 34-casita resort, we may already be the epitome of having a personal connection with our guests; however, in 2013, this is where many resorts — and travelers — are headed. Social media may have a part in ushering in this trend, as guests are now used to speaking one-on-one with resorts and restaurants via Facebook, Twitter and TripAdvisor. Because of this, larger hotels may be scrambling to keep up in 2013, when boutique properties and bed and breakfasts are already on a first-name basis with frequenting guests.

As guests and hoteliers alike make changes per evolving tastes, the next trend is only around the corner, and 2013 will surely be a year to benefit both parties.

Spending The Holidays At The Hermosa Inn

The smell of evergreen, peppermint and freshly baked pies fill the air as the holidays approach. It’s a time for family and friends to gather, and a time for travel and yearly traditions to be celebrated. While each family has their own way of celebrating, several resorts are starting their own traditions to ring in the holiday season.

Here at The Hermosa Inn, we will be continuing our holiday traditions by hanging the lights, placing poinsettias throughout the property and spreading that holiday spirit through the following festivities:

Ornament and Holiday Card Benefit

Throughout the month, guests dining at LON’s will have the opportunity to purchase hand-painted ornaments ($20 each) and holiday cards ($10 per set) specially created by students from the Scottsdale Artists School. Proceeds from these one-of-a-kind gifts will go toward scholarships allowing children who are less fortunate to attend the school’s Youth Academy winter and summer camps.

Holiday Carolers

Nothing says “holiday” like carolers singing your favorite tunes. “Falalala” will be ringing delightfully in your ears and set your holiday spirit into full swing as Mayneswing, Arizona’s premier, award-winning jazz vocal group sing their holiday cheer for all to hear, exclusively at LON’s at the Hermosa Inn.
WHEN: December 5-8 and 11-15 from 7–10 p.m.

Gingerbread Houses

One of the most unique holiday events we host, which has become a part of many families’ yearly traditions, is our gingerbread house class, where LON’s pastry chef guides participants in the art of creating and decorating their own holiday gingerbread house. Once the walls are built, guest creations — and sweet tooth — come to life with the endless, and edible, materials. Gingerbread houses start at $40 per house with snacks and beverages provided.
WHEN: December 8 and 15 at 2 p.m.

Holiday Brunch and Bazaar

A holiday-themed version of our recently launched Brunch & Bazaar will be taking place on Saturday, December 8. Part daytime dining, part open-air marketplace, this monthly event allows guests to relax and enjoy the views from LON’s patio as we feature cooking demos of holiday soups, salads and cocktails, with tastings that are complimentary with the donation of one unwrapped toy, which will be donated to Toys for Tots.
WHEN: December 8 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Holiday Stay + Christmas Dinner

As is the offering at many resorts across the nation, we are also offering a special holiday package, which includes a one night stay for two, $75 dinner credit per person to LON’s, and a $36 breakfast credit to LON’s. Those not staying the night may also enjoy LON’s three-course Christmas dinner, a la carte, at a price of $75 for adults, and a special children’s menu (ages 5-12 years) for $15, with children under 4 eating for free.

What better way to ring in the holiday season than with cheers to family and friends? Last Drop at the Hermosa’s Spirit Guide, Travis Nass, creates one-of-a-kind custom cocktails and, this month, will be featuring the following holiday cocktail:

White Christmas ($12)

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Partida Blanco Tequila
  • .5 oz Domaine de Canton
  • .5 oz Der Lachs Goldwasser
  • .5 oz Dolin Blanc Vermouth
  • 1 dash salt water
  • 2 dashes AZBL Figgy Pudding Bitters

Directions:

  • Stir and strain into an old-fashioned glass full of ice.
  • Garnish: Rosemary Christmas tree, orange peel star and powdered sugar snow
