The men and women recognized at the event were all featured in Az Business Leaders magazine, which profiles the state’s most influential and dynamic business leaders in Arizona. The magazine is published by AZ Big Media, which also publishes Az Business, Ranking Arizona, AZRE, Experience AZ and several other Arizona-based publications.

“When we came up with the concept of Az Business Leaders magazine, we wanted to create a publication that was a guide to the people with whom you want to do business,” said Mike Atkinson, president and CEO of AZ Big Media. “Each year, over the course of about two dozen meetings, we sort through more than 5,000 contenders to find those women and men who have the biggest impact on Arizona’s economy and that’s who we profile in the magazine.”

Fittingly, the welcoming remarks were delivered by Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, who was also one of the leaders featured in the magazine.

Earning the distinction of Arizona Business Leader of the Year was Kathleen Goeppinger, president and CEO of Midwestern University.

“The business leader of the year has done what some may say is the impossible: she has built and grown a medical school from the ground up during a time when the healthcare industry has been in turmoil,” said Robert Milligan, CFO of Healthcare Trust of America, Inc., who presented the award to Goeppinger. “Her efforts have helped feed an educated workforce to an industry that has been exploding in Arizona. And the school that she started from scratch has more than 3,000 students and has an annual economic impact of more than $300 million a year, which boosts all our bottom lines.”

Experts say quality education equals quality jobs for Arizona

The formula is simple: W = $. A well-qualified, educated workforce equals high-paying, deeply entrenched Arizona jobs and statewide economic growth.

“There are too many buzzwords and not enough solutions,” muses Rick Heumann, Chandler’s vice-mayor and a passionate education advocate. “If we don’t do something now, we’re going to lose an entire generation. The legislature cannot continue to starve schools and colleges and expect the economy to grow. Incentives will not overcome lack of qualified workforce.”

Heumann, and other business leaders also say that the solutions are more than just funding. It’s a challenge through the whole system to create opportunities and relevance for today’s students to become tomorrow’s well-qualified workforce.

“Arizona education has to produce the talent needed to find a job and fill the gaps in the workplace,” says Steve Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council. “We need to create more robust opportunities to inform students about career opportunities and the need for education.”

The Arizona business community is finding opportunities and step-by-step trying to bring change to the state’s education system. This is a marked contrast from political attacks on Common Core that one business leader confided are demonstrations that the legislature just doesn’t understand education or economic development.”

“There’s too much rote and not enough reason,” sighs Joan Koerber-Walker, president and CEO of the Arizona Bioindustry Association, Inc. “America is a world power because we know how to think. We’re losing our edge. Not only does STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) need to be at the core of what’s being taught, students must see relevancy to real life and learn to be creative and critical thinkers. It amounts to a needed change in the way we teach.”

Student retention through high school

“Ensuring that all our students are graduating from high school is simply the biggest priority,” sums Cathleen Barton, Arizona education manager for Intel. “We need students to graduate and be career- or college-ready,” she adds.

Study-after-study shows that students need education to get ahead. Barry Broome, CEO of Greater Phoenix Economic Council says that education is part of good economic development. “Improving education is a long-term investment for Arizona. Right now, only a small percentage of high schools generate half our college enrollment. That needs to change,” he says.

“We’re losing students at an unacceptable rate,” worries Bob Enderle, director of community relations at Medtronic. “About a quarter of our students don’t graduate high school, and that rate is higher in ethnically diverse populations.”

“Making education connect; making it more relevant will help keep students in school,” echoes Dave Cano, the company’s senior manager for continuous improvement and a member of Grand Canyon University’s STEM External Advisory Board. “When students don’t graduate, they earn less, the spend less and the add more costs to the system.”

Heumann adds that workers in minimum wage jobs do not earn enough to cover the costs of their services. “We need to help our students qualify for better jobs and then we need to make sure we have the jobs in the market,” he says. “With a high-paying job, a worker adds more value to the Arizona economy.”

Better education means a better economy

Eve Ross, W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc., director of public policy and strategic initiatives Ross about the vicious cycle, “Students are not getting a connection between what’s being learned and how it applies to careers. There are many well-paying careers that require some college, but not necessarily a four-year or graduate degree,” she says. “We need a whole class of student understanding and interested in manufacturing. We’re not talking about a worker tightening bolts on a parade of black Fords. We’re talking about workers who can see how things are made, and come up with ideas to make it better.”

“It’s a simple formula for economic growth. If we can’t attract well-paying careers, Arizona is not going to collect tax revenue for basic services,” she says. “We need a workforce who can read and understand a workplace; students who can do the math and innovate.”

Arizona does education well, but in pockets, says Koerber-Walker, “Schools are short on resources and there are many gaps creating ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots.’ We’re at the bottom of the barrel in too many ways with education. Business will not come if kids are prepared for the jobs.”

The investment in education for tomorrow’s economy comes at a crucial time. Arizona has invested millions of dollars to ready the education system for Common Core standards. “Common Core came out of the business sector,” explains Broome. “Industry needs a uniform standard by which is can compare education achievement to the same standards in every state. This is going to create some concern in Arizona when the results start coming in.”

Building passion for learning

“The world is rapidly changing. Tomorrow’s workforce needs to be able to adapt to a rapidly changing world.” Hal Halladay is the chief people officer for Infusionsoft, “The system needs to focus on training and teaching students to love learning. Education does not end at graduation. Students must be able to continue to learn in order to be able to handle global change.”

Medtronic has jumped into the partnering role with education. It’s been incredibly rewarding and equally frustrating. “We tried to bring students to demonstrate relevancy between what they’re learning and career opportunities, but the process was filled with road blocks,” says Ederle. “We ended up bringing in teachers as interns. One of the science instructors going through the program said it would change the way he taught physics. That’s a success, as we see it.”

Connecting science and technology to something students understand is the key of generating a passion for education. Zylstra talks about the Arizona SciTech Festival, “We had a physics professor talk about the science of baseball. All of the sudden, the kids were seeing how math and physics are in the world relevant to their interests. It’s this type of change we need in education to connect students to learning.”

“We have a mismatch between skills and opportunity,” Barton emphasizes. “Jobs are changing too fast, and education is not changing rapidly enough to keep up. We need to take schools to the next level of teaching.”

Koerber-Walker is concerned that there has been so much focus on what needed to be learned to pass the standardized tests, students weren’t given an opportunity to understand how to use the learning. “There needs to be improvement in outcomes,” she explains. “Students are lacking in soft skills. They need to learn critical thinking, problem solving and an ability to write and communicate.”

“We’re getting good workers coming out of college,” comments Halladay. “The problem is that while the students have the technical skills, they are not getting training on how to function in a face-to-face environment. They need an ability to adapt to changes and creatively solve challenges.”

Partnership part of a solid solution

“This is not going to be resolved by just giving schools more money,” Zylstra says. “It start with motivating parents to be participants in their child’s education. It requires business to partner with schools.” Enderle and Cano at Medtronic, agree. Barton and Heumann cited examples in their conversation.

Heumann doesn’t mince words. “We’re not competing with Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi for jobs. We’re competing with Texas, California, Washington and New York. Our education investment needs to be at their levels, not the bottom of the heap.”

“We need to re-fund education. The way education is funded does not reflect the needs of business in Arizona,” suggests Koerber-Walker. “Teachers are spending major portions of their own incomes supplying classrooms. That has to stop. We need to invest some dollars to provide schools with the tools to teach the workers we want to offer new business.”

“We have a lot of thoughtful people involved in the process of bettering our schools and workforce. In business, we know that if you don’t invest in training, you start losing ground to competition.” Barton is listing off the solutions she’d like to see for schools. “We want teachers to have the resources to make the curriculum relevant to keep students engaged.”

“Charter schools need to have the same public accountability as public schools,” insists Heumann. “If we have a well-balanced education with pay encouraging bright and effective teachers into the profession, we’re going to do a lot better with students coming out.”

Halladay sums up what a good education system means, “When I try to recruit top-level knowledge workers for my company, the quality of schools is a big reason they will accept or walk away from the job offer. The inconsistency of education quality across the Valley is a major recruiting challenge.”

Heumann sighs, “We can spend millions on cutting taxes and offering incentives. If we don’t have good workers, we’re not going to get good companies locating here. It’s simple economics.”

Not making the grade
Personal finance social network WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2014’s states with the best and worst school systems. WalletHub used 12 key metrics, including dropout rates, test scores and bullying incident rates to assess the quality of education in each state. According to the analysis, Arizona has the 9th worst school system. Here is where Arizona schools rank in individual categories (1=best):

Midwestern Appoints New Dean of Basic Sciences

Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Midwestern University, announces the promotion of Kyle Ramsey, Ph.D., to Dean of Basic Sciences for both the Downers Grove, IL and Glendale, AZ campuses. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Ramsey served the University as the Associate Dean for Basic Sciences.

“Dr. Ramsey is an outstanding teacher, very successful researcher, and effective leader,” Dr. Goeppinger said. “He has earned the respect and admiration of the academic community at Midwestern University and at other institutions across the nation.”

Dr. Ramsey began his tenure at Midwestern University in 1993, providing instruction to students in the osteopathic medicine program while also actively pursuing a variety of research projects. His primary research focus is on Chlamydia pathogenesis and immune responses to chlamydial infection. In 2009, he received the Irvin M. Korr Award for his research from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The award recognizes the lifetime achievements of a basic scientist for his or her commitment to research.

Dr. Ramsey has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings, has published extensively, and has earned significant research grants from the National Institutes of Health and other organizations. After three years on active duty with the U.S. Army, he entered the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences graduate school, completing his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 1990. He completed his post-doctoral work at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and served as Chief of Clinical Microbiology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 2008 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In his role of Dean of Basic Sciences, Dr. Ramsey will work closely with the University’s leadership team to develop and implement programs that prepare Midwestern students for successful careers in the health sciences.

Midwestern University invites the community to visit the state-of-the-art Midwestern University Eye Institute at 19379 North 59th Avenue in Glendale on Tuesday, October 7, for an exclusive Fall Designer Eyewear Show.

Glasses and sunglasses frames designed by Jimmy Choo, Carrera, Tura, Titan Flex, and others will be discounted up to 30% off of retail prices. Designer frames will be on display at the Eye Institute’s Vision Center from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM. The Designer Eyewear Show is open to the public.

Anthony Will, D.O., of Midwestern University’s Multispecialty Clinic has been named a Patients’ Choice physician for four consecutive years.

Midwestern Physician Earns Patients’ Choice Award

Anthony Will, D.O., Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) at Midwestern University, and a practicing physician at the University’s Multispecialty Clinic in Glendale, Arizona, has been recognized as a Patients’ Choice physician.

The Patients’ Choice Award recognizes physicians for the positive influence of their work. The honor, tabulated from hundreds of thousands of patient reviews, was awarded to physicians who received consistently near-perfect scores – only five percent of the nation’s 870,000 active physicians in 2013. The award represents the fourth consecutive year that Dr. Will has been so honored.

The awards were given by Vitals.com, an online resource that millions of patients use to rate their doctors on various components of care, including accuracy of their diagnosis, the amount of time they spent with the doctor, and the doctor’s bedside manner and follow-up care.

This surgery results in no post-operative limitations and many patients are discharged within 24 hours. Chow is one of 10 surgeons in the world to perform his surgery.

Midwestern Appoints New Director of Development

Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and CEO of Midwestern University, announced a new director on the University’s Glendale Campus.

Staci Glass has been named Director of Development and Alumni Relations for the Glendale Campus. Ms. Glass brings nearly two decades of administrative, planning, fund-raising, and event management experience to Midwestern. Most recently, Ms. Glass served as the Chief Development Officer of Florence Crittenton Services of Arizona; she has also worked in the past for Hacienda HealthCare of Phoenix and the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association.

Over her professional career, Ms. Glass has been heavily involved in Valley non-profit operations. She has worked with such organizations as the Junior League of Phoenix, Junior Achievement, and Arizona Spina Bifida, and is a past president of the Rotary Club of Phoenix West. She has also volunteered for the Halo Animal Shelter, Child Crisis Center, and the Ronald McDonald House.

“I am both grateful and excited to join the Midwestern University family in supporting the mission of educating tomorrow’s healthcare team and building resources for our students, faculty, and patients,” said Ms. Glass.

In her new role at Midwestern University, Ms. Glass will oversee fundraising and alumni relations for all of the University’s six colleges, including event sponsorship programs, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, major gifts, donor stewardship, alumni organizations and programs, and grant writing.

New Deans Named at Midwestern University

Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Midwestern University, announced new faculty members for the University as a result of Midwestern’s continuing growth.

Thomas K. Graves, D.V.M., Ph.D., DACVIM, was named Associate Dean for Clinical Education, College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), and Mitchell Emerson, Ph.D., has assumed the role of Interim Dean, College of Pharmacy-Glendale (CPG).

Prior to joining Midwestern University, Dr. Graves was Director of the Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine and a Professor of Veterinary Clinical Medicine for the University of Illinois. He has earned multiple awards as an educator, including the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award and the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Graves earned his D.V.M. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry.

A 10-year Midwestern University veteran, Dr. Emerson served as the Associate Dean for the College of Pharmacy-Glendale for the past five years. He has experience as the Acting Chair of the Pharmacy Practice Department and has served many years as a tenured faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as performed extensive work with the accreditation and curriculum standards for the College. Dr. Emerson succeeds CPG Dean Dennis J. McCallian, Pharm.D., who retired after 12 years with Midwestern.

 

 

Midwestern University Expands Leadership Team

Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Midwestern University has announced an expansion of the senior management of the University as it continues with carefully planned growth and ever-expanding graduate healthcare programs.

Teresa Welch Fossum, D.V.M., M.S., Ph.D., DACVS, has assumed a new position as the Vice President of Research and Strategic Initiatives, and Kathleen N. Player, Ed.D., M.S.N., M.B.A., MS-C, has accepted the position as Vice President, Chief Academic Officer, College of Health Sciences.

Dr. Fossum holds doctoral degrees from Washington State University (D.V.M.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D., Veterinary Microbiology), and has been an educator for over 30 years. Most recently, she served at Texas A&M as Vice Chancellor for Global and Corporate Partnerships. She was also the founder and former director of its Institute for Preclinical Studies, and served as the Director of Clinical Programs, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Biomedical Devices, at the Michael E. DeBakey Institute. While Dr. Fossum’s administrative duties will be directed to Midwestern University at large, her extensive experience in veterinary medicine and surgery, research, and innovative development will make her an invaluable consulting resource for the leaders of the new College of Veterinary Medicine on the Glendale Campus. Dr. Fossum is the author of the veterinary textbook “Small Animal Surgery,” considered to be a definitive resource on the topic.

Named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Arizona Business in 2012, Dr. Player began her career in healthcare as a psychiatric nurse and mental health counselor and most recently served as President, Chief Academic Officer, and Provost for Grand Canyon University. Dr. Player was instrumental in shepherding the rapid, sustained
growth GCU has experienced, and in overseeing successful accreditation bids for several programs. Dr. Player has a long history of community service and healthcare advocacy. She is also a member of several boards and associations including the Board of Directors of Scottsdale Healthcare, and was appointed by Governor Jan Brewer to Chair Arizona’s Commission for Post-Secondary Education. Dr. Player received her Ed.D. from Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida, and her M.S.N. and M.B.A. from GCU.

“The addition of such talented and experienced administrators means that Midwestern University is well-positioned to move forward in its ever-expanding mission to educate tomorrow’s healthcare team,” said Dr. Goeppinger.

Midwestern University now hosts nearly 6,000 graduate-level students of healthcare professions between its two campuses in Glendale and Downers Grove, Illinois. The University’s new College of Veterinary Medicine in Glendale is slated to welcome its first class of 100 students this fall, and will be the first school offering the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree in the state of Arizona.

Partnership Creates New Valley Medical Resources

At a time when healthcare dominates the national news, Midwestern University in Glendale and John C. Lincoln Hospitals, Phoenix, are working together to augment local medical resources by creating a general surgery training program for osteopathic medical school graduates.

The new osteopathic general surgery residency program, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, was jointly developed by Midwestern and John C. Lincoln. The program was approved for two residents to begin each year, for a total of 10 residents in the program.

Residents will be trained at both John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital, 250 East Dunlap, Phoenix, and John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital, 19829 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix. John C. Lincoln Hospitals are not-for-profit acute care community medical centers that have been nationally recognized for their quality of patient care and medical technology.

“Midwestern University is committed to the development of quality postdoctoral residency programs in the State of Arizona and around the country,” said Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Midwestern University. “Our mission is to provide our communities with well-trained physicians and other much-needed healthcare providers both now and in the future.”

“John C. Lincoln brings a vast array of surgical experience to this program,” noted Alicia Mangram, M.D., FACS, Medical Director of the Level 1 Trauma Services program at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital and Program Director of the new General Surgery Residency Program. “We have 20 general surgeons who will be associated with the residency program with experience in trauma surgery, advanced laparoscopic, and robotic procedures.”

Projected physician shortages have made establishing new Arizona-based osteopathic surgical residency opportunities a top priority for Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) and the University’s Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institute (MWU/OPTI). According to Midwestern statistics, 97 percent of Arizona-native AZCOM students who receive postdoctoral training in-state remain in Arizona to practice, reducing the state’s physician shortage.

Any graduate of an accredited osteopathic medical school may apply to participate in the surgical residency program, Dr. Mangram explained. Residents selected to participate in the program will complete training in basic general surgery, advanced laparoscopic, robotic, colorectal, trauma, surgical critical care, endoscopy, vascular, and cardiothoracic procedures. Training in burns and pediatrics will be provided offsite.

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) today announced the appointment of its Board of Directors for the 2014 fiscal year, as approved by the Executive Committee.

Incoming Midwestern University students receive their white coats at a special ceremony just after the beginning of the fall semester. The University’s total enrollment in 14 graduate-level healthcare programs offered at its Glendale campus has surpassed 3,000 students for the first time this year.

Midwestern Glendale Enrollment Tops 3,000 for 1st time

Midwestern University, home to Arizona’s largest medical school and the state’s first College of Veterinary Medicine, announced the achievement of another milestone in the University’s history.

For the first time since the University’s Glendale campus was established in 1995, total enrollment in Midwestern’s 14 graduate degree programs exceeds 3,000 students. For comparison’s sake, only 136 students – 103 osteopathic medical students and 33 physician assistant students – were on campus during Midwestern’s first year of classes in the Fall of 1996.

“The mission of Midwestern University is to meet the healthcare needs of society by educating professionals who are committed to caring for others,” said Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Midwestern University.  “We have achieved and sustained our growth by offering quality healthcare education and by developing new academic programs for professions that are in demand, and through the clinical institutes that serve the health needs of our neighbors.”

More than 6,200 medical professionals have graduated from Midwestern University’s Glendale campus since its inception, with over 40% remaining in-state to practice.

Pearl Named Program Director at Midwestern

Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Midwestern University, announced the appointment of Jeffrey M. Pearl, M.D., as Program Director and Professor for the College of Health Sciences’ Physician Assistant Program.

Dr. Pearl comes to Midwestern with a distinguished academic career with a commitment to research and education. He served as a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and specializes in congenital heart surgery and transplantation.  Dr. Pearl is also a Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic and a Clinical Professor for the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix.  He earned his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and his M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles Medical School.

How did the recession affect Midwestern University’s enrollment and course offerings?
It’s a very interesting thing, but when a student is ready to make a career choice, we’re finding that more and more want to go into health care, because it’s one of the professions – whether it be medicine or dentistry or occupational therapy – that they know is always going to be needed in the future. So, instead of having a concern about our enrollments, the application pool and the applicants is so high right now that our toughest job is deciding who we can admit. It’s pretty much the reverse of the industries that I know of around the Valley.

What kind of feedback are you getting from business leaders in terms of what they need from Midwestern’s course offerings?
One of the tough things that we are always doing is looking very strategically at the health care needs of all of the communities that we serve. We spend a great deal of time analyzing and looking at what’s needed next. In many times, we’ll start an academic program to meet a shortage within the state. A great example is nurse anesthesia. We began the nurse anesthesia masters program in the College of Health Sciences because the local hospital CEOs came to us and said, We can’t recruit; there’s not enough here in the Valley; we absolutely have to have a program. So we have responded to the community need, the hospital need, and even the general health care need when we’e gone ahead and started new programs.

What are some of the challenges and trends facing private universities such as Midwestern?
I’ve been the president and CEO now for 15 years. And in those 15 years, while sometimes challenges may change because student expectations might be a little different, curriculums change, but I don’t know if I see any of the core values of running a higher education university different today than I did 15 years ago. I think sometimes we have to be a little more aware of the academics around us. We have to be a little more sensitive to the students who come in – not with the same background that I might have had when I was a college student or a graduate student. But I think for the most part, the core values of who we are and how we serve the community have never really changed.

What skills are needed to be an effective C-level executive at a private university?
I think people who want to be in leadership roles have to be very willing to carefully listen to others and not be the one to talk, but be the one to listen and understand people’s needs, to be able to give them coaching and direction. The other thing I would say (to people) looking to get ahead in their career is to never be afraid of the numbers. I have had people who have worked for me say, “I can’t understand the numbers.” Well, I think that you have to understand the numbers and you have to make sure you have a great understanding of the financial part of an organization and how does it grow and what do the numbers say to you. I’ve always told people here that you can’t manage what you can’t measure. So, if you can measure it and understand it and set up clear objectives, you then can be very effective.
