The new Nordstrom Rack will open alongside a strong mix of retailers including Target, DSW, Old Navy and Steinmart. Located on Loop 101 & 102, Tempe Marketplace includes 1.3 million square feet of stores and restaurants.
“We are very excited to welcome Nordstrom Rack to Tempe Marketplace,” said David Malin, Director of Acquisitions and Development. “They are the perfect complement to the fashion component of our project and to our broad selection of shopping, dining and entertainment venues. We look forward to their fall opening in 2014.”

Dress to Impress at Work: Style by Vanessa Renee

Unfortunately, most of us spend 40 plus hours a week in the office, and the way we dress makes a huge impression towards how people perceive us. If you want to get to the top, you better dress like you are already there.

These work outfits are colorful, unique, and professional. Most importantly, all of these outfits will definitely get you noticed at work! I want to show you some fierce ways for dressing to impress using something other then the typical, plain old black and gray attire. I hope these styles will inspire you to create some of your own work looks!

Outfit 1

 Neutral

I am in love with this outfit. It is extremely classy and stylish in my eyes. Ashley is wearing a tan Banana Republic skirt, paired with a Forever 21 striped button down blouse. Her necklace is a recent purchase from TJ Maxx, and I layered it with a Vanessa Renee side cross necklace from www.vanessareneestyle.com. She is carrying a Michael Kors work bag, and wearing nude pumps from Aldo. Nude pumps should be a staple in your wardrobe. If you don’t already own some, immediately go invest in a great pair! (right)

Outfit 2

 Trendy

This outfit is a little funky, but right on trend! Ashley is wearing a navy skirt from The Limited. Additionally, I dressed her in a plaid top from H&M, Tory Burch flats, a black Michael Kors watch, and chunky gold bracelet from TJ Maxx. The statement pearl necklace is from Stella Dot, and is the perfect touch of feminine that this outfit needs. We layered it with the Vanessa Renee side cross necklace from www.vanessareneestyle.com. The last pop that this outfit needed was the red messenger bag from Dillards. You can also carry a more neutral color with this if you tend to be a little more reserved. The best part about this outfit? You can throw on some navy or black skinny jeans and make it casual for after work fun! (left)

Outfit 3

 Stripes

White is a huge trend for spring right now, and these tailored slacks from The Limited are a good work staple to have. I paired these white pants with a classic light pink, striped Brooks Brothers button down for an ultra professional look. Always remember that vertical strips can be very flattering, especially when being paired with bold white pants. Also, I added a touch of chic pearls to complete this look. This look could be great for a work conference, seminar, or luncheon. You will definitely make a great impression! (right)

Outfit 4

 Feminine Leather

Leather has been a huge trend this year, and can be pulled off in a classy way when paired with the right pieces. I thought this Chiffon feminine pink top from Nordstrom Rack balanced the leather out perfectly. I used one of the statement necklaces from my www.vanessareneestyle.com website to tie the look together. (left)

Outfit 5

Nautical

This look is a mix of the Spring nautical trend with a pop of color. This is a Nordstrom savvy skirt, and is paired with a striped navy collared shirt from Forever 21. A popular trend right now is buttoning blouses all the way to the top to look extra sleek. As you can see, stripes are really in this Spring and can create a ultimately flattering look. (right)

BLACK HALO EVE COLLECTION MARKS LAUREL BERMAN'S TEN YEARS OF SUCCESS

After completing a bachelor’s degree in political science, on track towards a law degree, Laurel Berman decided to make a dramatic change in her career path. She interviewed and was accepted to the San Francisco Academy of Fashion Design.

EVE_LouiseRoseNow celebrating her company’s 10th anniversary, Black Halo has become a recognized name among top designers, celebrities and businesswomen alike. Her Spring 2013 collection Black Halo EVE, a brand new line of evening wear showcasing the sophisticated and slimming style she is known for, has already seen high demand and celebrity appearances.

Louise Roe was one of the first to wear a piece from Black Halo EVE during her red carpet appearance at the 84th Academy Awards. Black Halo has been worn by many others red-carpet names over the past decade, including Lauren Conrad, Kim Kardashian, Amanda Seyfried, Mariah Carey, Fergi and Eva Mendes. Berman’s styles have graced the covers of national magazines and appeared in scenes from Date Night, Ironman and Girls, among others.

The release and instant success of Black Halo EVE, Berman says, has been one of the top moments in her career so far. Prompted by a request from Neiman Marcus to design a collection of evening wear, it was the only store to carry the EVE collection when it made its first appearance fall 2012. The Spring 2013 Collection of EVE is now in full force at Neiman Marcus, Saks and Nordstrom, and online at shopbop.com and blackhalo.com.

image004 image005

Black Halo is for the “romantic rebel,” Berman explains, “the rule breaker.” Her designs are sensible and timeless, allowing for countless ways to accessorize and create new looks from the same piece. “On trend, but never trendy.”

BH_JACKIEO_AUBERGINEMost well-known for the “Jackie O” dress, Berman aims to allow women to look and feel their best in whatever they are doing. “Two inches taller and 10 pounds thinner,” is a look women can achieve with Black Halo’s dress architecture and is especially important for those with on-camera appearances.

After a highly successful decade, Berman says her sights are not set far enough to forecast what the next ten years have in store for Black Halo, but a brick and mortar store is not out of the question. Black Halo shoes, handbags and fragrances may also see beginnings down the road.

She began her dream inside of a 3,500-square-foot building, uncertain of what the future would hold. Today, Black Halo occupies 15,000 square feet and employes 30, including her husband. “I wake up everyday in a good mood,” Berman says. A true professional fairytale of following a passion, Berman continues to flourish in the fashion world and love what she does.

Golf Fashion Tips From Sassy Golf: Dressing In Layers

Greetings, Sassanistas! This month we’re going to be talking about dressing in layers. I know that Phoenix is no Denver, but it still gets nippy from time to time — especially those winter mornings. However, the difference is it doesn’t stay that way. Thanks to the abnormally strong desert sun, the day can warm up to a perfect 70 degrees. That’s why I think layers are more of a necessity here than anywhere else.

The key to mastering this trend (yes, layering is not only practical; it just happens to be trendy as well!) is cutting out the bulk. Ensuring that your layers are lightweight will save you from a lot of discomfort both early and late in the day. Not only will you be able to have free range of motion, you’ll also be able to store them without having to drag a suitcase along with you.

What’s even better is the fact that manufactures have made a point of creating lightweight apparel without sacrificing function. Simply put: You’ll still be warm. The three most efficient ways to layer include jackets, vests and leggings. I’ll show you how to rock each look.

Golf Fashion Tips: Dressing In Layers

The Jacket

Calvin Klein Performance, $74.25 We’ll start with the most obvious choice for layering — the jacket. Again, lightweight and limiting excess bulk is key here. I would avoid any type of down jacket because you’ll feel very restricted. Although fashion is a ton of fun, the first priority is the game, and you need full range of motion, in your arms especially, for your swing.Try something like the blue, or almost periwinkle, zip-up of the Calvin Klein Performance line found on Bonton.com for $74.25. It’s almost like a down vest and zip-up in one. This is a perfect compromise because the arms are still knit and allows you that range of motion. This zip-up also comes colors ranging from a classic black to a flaming, fire-engine red; it just depends on how bold your personal style is. Just remember: If you make it a statement piece, the rest of your outfit should be toned down.

Or, try something a little more classic like the Bogner jacket to the left for $499. It fits the lightweight and movable bill, and it has this classic golf plaid pattern in a neutral black, white and gray. This makes it very versatile because it will compliment any outfit.

Leggings

To me, there is nothing worse than freezing your ass (and legs) off. But a lot of times, the lower half of your body is literally left out in the cold because it’s much more difficult to layer. My solution is leggings and legwarmers.

Leggings are great because it allows you to wear that little skirt you love no matter what the weather looks like. You can try the capri-cut, like those on the bottom left from Nordstrom for $24; or strut your stuff in a loud pattern. Leggings also come in a rainbow of colors, so feel free to play away. Again, remember a bold pattern or color should be the focal point of the outfit; keep the rest toned down.

Legwarmers, unbelievably, got reincarnated from the ’80s, and I love it. They are a lot easier to take off than leggings, if need be, and can pull your whole outfit together. For instance, I have a pair that are argyle, and they’re one of my go-to items. Just another way to add in some of that classic golf style. Check out the Burlington Classic pair (bottom, center) for $21.24. They come in almost any color combination you can imagine on Hosiera.com.

Finally, I just have to show you these. Do you remember those ill-designed cargo pants that zip off into capris and shorts? Good idea, bad design. Well, I found someone who managed to get it right. They are black J Brand skinny jeans to the bottom right. I know they’re jeans but if the denim is more of a stretch blend, which most women’s jeans are moving towards, they’ll be workable. Talk about easy and stylish.

Nordstrom, $24 Nordstrom, $40 Burlington Classic Hosiera, $21.24 J Brand, $328 J Brand, $328 Capri

The Vest

Bogner, $499 Finally, we’ll talk about the vest. This section is for those of you who just can’t fathom wearing anything other than down because no matter what people say, it’s the warmest stuff out there.A full-blown down jacket is simply not going to work, but a vest will. It’s the best of both worlds. You’re warm in your down and have complete range of motion. This is another place where you can play with color. I love this hot-pink Bogner vest (to the left) for $499. It also comes in bright orange, black and white.

Or, try something less bulky, like the sleek, black-and-white Calvin Klein Performance vest (bottom left) for $79.50 Not only does it look nice, but it’s also made out of a quick dry material to keep you comfortable in the rare occasion that it rains.

Calvin Klein Performance vest, $79.50

Where do you find all this stuff you ask? Well, online, of course; but if you are one of those people who just has to try things on, you’re in luck. Calvin Klein Performance has a store at the Scottsdale Quarter, GrayHawk Golf Club carries Bogner apparel and a Nordstrom is located at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Hopefully now you’ll know longer say that it’s just a little too chilly to hit the golf course. If you can master layering, you’ve mastered being physically comfortable (skills aside that is) while in the game. See you later, Sassanistas!

Be strong, be smart, be sassy!

Kendra Scott Color Bar

Kendra Scott Jewelry Boutique Opens At Scottsdale Quarter

Kendra Scott, founder of Kendra ScottNew to the Scottsdale Quarter is jewelry boutique Kendra Scott, known for its handcrafted and custom jewelry in bold color combinations. With a fan base that includes Eva Longoria, Cameron Diaz, Hilary Duff and Sofia Vergara, Kendra Scott is a global brand sold at retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s, and has locations in both Texas and California. This is the first Arizona storefront for Kendra Scott.

“On our website, we were seeing a lot of customers coming out of the Phoenix/Scottsdale area,” says Owner Kendra Scott. “When we came down and visited Scottsdale Quarter, we were just blown away by the very synergistic brands, and when you look at the Scottsdale woman, she is a Kendra Scott girl; she’s fashionable, she’s put together, she’s fun, she’s outgoing, she has a great fashion sense, and she’s not afraid to express herself with her jewelry or her fashion. So we really felt this was the place for us.”

The boutique will introduce the Scottsdale-area shoppers to the Kendra Scott Color Bar™, with boasts multiple 55″ touch-screen display monitors, iPads and a kaleidoscope of 26 gemstones and 23 jewelry silhouettes in both gold and rhodium silver settings. Although online shoppers can find this on Kendra Scott’s website, the in-store feature provides customers a hands-on, interactive experience to customize one-of-a-kind jewelry.

“People have never seen anything like this,” Scott says, “and they can’t believe they can walk out within minutes with a custom piece of jewelry. We want people to be part of the design process, and our customers just love it.”

Scott adds that the Color Bar™ is a great way to create personalized, statement jewelry as gifts for friends and loved ones this holiday season.

“We help by finding out what her favorite colors are, her skin tone, her hair color,” Scott says. “We’re able to help people find the perfect gift for someone, and we want them to be wowed when they open it. And we usually do a pretty good job at that.”

Kendra Scott also offers space available to reserve for special events, including bridal parties.

“We have a lot of customers who will bring in their outfits that they’re trying to match or a dress that they’re wearing to an event to a party,” Scott says. “We do a lot of bridal parties, so the bride will pick her colors, and her bridesmaids pick the style that they want. We make it a fun event with champagne and cupcakes.”

Not only does Kendra Scott accommodate bridal parties, but customers and charities can also take part in Kendra Gives Back parties, where local charities and those who support them are able to come in to the store and have a shopping party, with 20 percent given back to that charity.

“In our company, we have three core values, which are family, fashion and philanthropy,” Scott says. “And giving back to the community where we have stores has been very, very important to us.

“We work with a lot of women’s and children’s charities, so if there’s an organization in this area that would like to do a Kendra Gives Back event, we’re always so thrilled to do that.”

Fall fashion trends

Cocktail Couture: Fall Fashion Trends

Cocktail Couture: This year’s fall fashion trends take the tried-and-true and turn it up a notch.

Designers this fall set out to correct a few misconceptions for this fall season’s fashion trends:

Misconception: Fall fashion calls for dark colors.

As we saw with the spring and summer months, the brighter the ensemble, the better. And it isn’t any different for the fall season — albeit, we aren’t talking DayGlo bright. Tone it down, and go for honey gold, tangerine, chartreuse, rose and especially blue. Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Herve Leger, to name a few, all rocked the blue hue on the runway.

Misconception: Tweed doesn’t flatter.

When you have Michael Kors working with the woolen, flecked fabric, you’re left with garments that are more than just a replication or recreation of your grandmother’s tweed dress collection. Kors knows how to take this classic fall statement borrowed through the years and transform it into an elegant and timeless look. Pair it with some Manolo Blahnik pumps, and you have a match made in couture heaven.

Misconception: Leather is not Arizona-friendly.

OK, this one is true — especially in the summer months — but this fall, break some rules during the cooler, early-winter months. Leather is found in nearly every designer’s collection — whether it’s a leather dress, leather accessories … you name it. For something a bit understated but sexy, give Jean Paul Gaultier’s tough, sleek leather bodice pencil dress a chance. With such a simple design and shape, dress it up with standout shoes and accessories.

Misconception: Men couldn’t care less about what they wear.

Come on; if this were true, we wouldn’t have custom clothiers out there, like Astor & Black, providing tailored, personalized looks for men of all ages. Ladies, now that you’re ready for your next cocktail party, charity event, holiday party or even your next date night, ensure the man in your life looks just as great. And anything that looks like it came straight from Mad Men will always do.

Fall Fashion Shoot Behind the Scenes

Behind The Scenes: Fall Fashion Photo Shoot [PHOTOS]

Herve Leger, RED Valentino, Michael Kors and more — with such fabulous clothing, shoes and accessories from both Nordstrom and Astor & Black, Scottsdale Living teamed up with a fantastic group of people last Thursday, August 23, and camped out for the day at Talking Stick Resort’s Orange Sky for its Fall 2012 issue’s fall fashion photo shoot.

And the nearly two-month process paid off. The models from JANI Model Management, Michael, Trisha, Sheniece, Nemi, Michael and Nick, looked incredible in their respective outfits; the hairstylist and makeup artist, Randee Miller and Joanna Avillar for Mane Attraction Salon, respectively, stunningly transformed the models; Katie McEndoo of Astor & Black provided and styled the men into a seemingly Mad Men-inspired look; and Kira Brown complemented the dresses with fitting shoes and accessories — all from Nordstrom at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Not to mention the location was a beautiful backdrop to it all. The location, Orange Sky, couldn’t have been more perfect with its sleek, chic lounges and private dining areas; and let’s not forget about that view from its outdoor patio — especially during sunset.

Scottsdale Living would like to thank the team, including the photographers (Mike Mertes Cory Bergquist and Glory Shim) who captured the jaw-dropping images that will grace the pages of Scottsdale Living’s Fall 2012 issue.

Keep an eye out for it in October. We’re sure it will be difficult to miss on the stands at AJ’s and Bashas’ throughout the North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley area.

In the meantime, check out more of these behind-the-scenes photos of our fall fashion shoot on our Facebook:

Work-to-Play Wardrobe

3 Must-Haves For Your Summer Work-to-Play Wardrobe

It’s that time of the year again — summertime in Arizona. Grueling, sun-filled days and long steamy nights. No guilt attached for orchestrating an impromptu happy hour with friends or co-workers to replenish after the days drudgery.

With this enduring season officially upon us, putting together a versatile, elegant work-to-play wardrobe can be a challenge. To save you frustration and time, we’ve listed three affordable, must-haves for your summer wardrobe, along with trendy examples of how to wear and accessorize each selection.

These easy-to-achieve looks will take you seamlessly from day to night, without breaking a sweat!

The Floral Blazer

Day

This piece will look great paired with just about anything. But for a polished, professional look, try a sleek black or grey pencil skirt (or even a pair of loose trouser shorts) matched with a flowing, brightly-colored tank. Finish the look with some strappy, nude sandals or peep-toe wedges.

Night

Ditch the blazer, and showcase your brilliant tank top. Add that “wow” factor by applying a vibrant lip (reds and pastels are very in this season). When it comes to spicing up your outfit, accessorizing is simple and very effective. A cute, sequined clutch or a chunky, turquoise necklace will do the trick.

Cropped Pastel Pants

Day

If you’re even remotely attuned to fashion trends, than you’re no stranger to the pastel cropped pants craze. There are several different variations of this pant (a trouser and a more casual approach), and either would work great for the office.

Pair the pant with a sleek, earthy-hued racerback. Throw on some comfortable, glossy flats, and add some loose, beach wave curls to top off the look.

Night

Bring this look to the next level by replacing your reliable flats with a pair of metallic espadrilles or bright, patent-leather slingbacks. Add a bold, delicate necklace and a shoulder bag to complete the outfit.

Bold Print Dress

Day

The luxury of a bold print dress is that you can find just about any shape or cut, making it incredibly easy to flatter any body type. Take this dress to work by adding a featherweight, short-sleeved cardigan. A pair of neutral booties adds polish and keeps the focus on the dress pattern.

Night

Retire the cardigan and throw your hair up into a messy, braided bun. Add a set of bold earrings (be sure they don’t conflict with the pattern or color of your dress) to seal the deal.

Where to look for your work-to-play wardrobe:

Thanks to the present popularity for such items, many local stores, including H&M, Gap, Forever 21, J.Crew, Banana Republic and Nordstrom, have mastered these chic, unique pieces.
