Meet Market: More business leaders seeking atypical event solutions

Competitors always seek an edge over an opponent.

That’s especially true in business where corporate meetings and team-building events are taking competition to a whole new level.

“We will do more than 1,000 corporate events this year,” says Scott Sanders, founder and president of Octane Raceway, which offers high-speed kart racing on an indoor-outdoor track in Scottsdale.

Octane is part of a growing trend that has seen a growing number of companies move away from staging their corporate events at the nearest airport hotel meeting room and evolving their events into more unique, fun and fresh environments.

“Companies are looking for different ways to engage their employees,” Sanders says. “One of the things we pride ourselves on is creating a memorable event. It’s not like people leave and say, ‘We went to a meeting and accomplished our business objective.’ When they come to Octane, they get to go off site, experience something together and get their competitive juices flowing. Companies are starting to recognize that team building not just as a line item on their budget, but something that has a true return on investment when it comes to having productive teams and having employees who feel appreciated.”

Octane Raceway isn’t the only place in the Valley where business leaders can effectively mix business with pleasure and team building. Here are just a few options:

Octane Raceway Gears Up to Close, Celebrate New Location

Octane Raceway is putting the final touches on the new racetrack that is set to open at the Pavilions at Talking Stick in a few weeks. After ten years, Octane is raising the bar by moving their business from the current Phoenix location to a modern facility in Scottsdale that will house the only permanent indoor and outdoor racetrack in the United States. A final celebration is planned at the Phoenix location throughout the upcoming 4th of July holiday weekend. When the party is over, the Phoenix location will close for a fluid transition into the Scottsdale venue.

“For many months, the excitement has been building about our move to the Pavilions at Talking Stick,” states Scott Sanders, president of Octane Raceway. “From the moment we started thinking about a new location, our sole focus has been to deliver the best racing experience imaginable. Because of the dedicated Octane staff, our valued partners and loyal racing fans, we know that this new facility will offer the best of the best. One of our regular racers, who previewed the Scottsdale venue, put it very succinctly saying it is the ‘Holy Grail of Kart Racing’.”

OR Kart Racer_SmallTheir current Phoenix facility, located at 48th and Washington Streets, is going out in style with a final celebration from July 4 – 7. Octane will be open on July 4 from 11 a.m to 8 p.m. and as a way of thanking customers for their continued patronage since 2003, they are offering a free race at their new Scottsdale facility to anyone who purchases two races during the final weekend in Phoenix. To share the memories and excitement of the Phoenix facility, Octane encourages customers to post photos and videos to Instagram tagging #OctaneMemories & @OctaneRaceway. The last day of business for the Phoenix location is Sunday, July 7, with the doors permanently closing at 8 p.m.

The Grand Opening of the new facility at the Pavilions at Talking Stick takes place July 19 – 21 with special activities all weekend long. The public is welcome to join in the celebration, tour the new facility, and then experience the thrill of the new racetrack. The Trackside Bar & Grill will have food and drink specials all weekend. On Saturday, July 20, beginning at 7 p.m., meet and mingle with the Hooters Girls and don’t miss their featured race as they fly through the one-third mile track.

Specifically designed for the venue, the track layout is unique in that each lap begins indoors then winds through an outdoor section of the course before returning inside. Air walls separate the indoor and outdoor track sections, which drivers are able to navigate seamlessly. For temperature and element control, the outdoor portion is covered with a permanent steel canopy and has a misting system throughout the track.

The new venue is 65,000 square feet of entertainment options and meeting spaces with an on-property restaurant and bar. The meeting spaces have full conference amenities with state-of-the-art audiovisual capabilities and can be set up in many styles according to group needs like boardroom, theater, conference or dining room formats. The facility can easily accommodate groups of up to 500 and boasts a 5,000 square foot outdoor patio giving a relaxed environment for happy hours, post-racing analysis and family time. The event planning staff manages all details for corporate meetings, team building events, and social gatherings like birthday celebrations, graduation parties and any type of group get together.

“The new location is highly visible providing easy access to our existing customer base in Tempe, Mesa, Chandler and Phoenix,” says Sanders on their new geography. “We are now in the center of Scottsdale just minutes from the Scottsdale Airpark and North Phoenix business districts. I am very proud of the first class operation we are building, bringing both indoor kart racing and corporate event planning to the next level. We’re looking forward to the next chapter of Octane Raceway in the Pavilions at Talking Stick.”

Octane Raceway will open in Scottsdale

The Valley leader in active entertainment, Octane Raceway, announced the opening of their new kart racing and entertainment venue in Scottsdale. Opening this spring, Octane Raceway will move their current Phoenix facility to a new location in the Pavilions at Talking Stick. The new Scottsdale location will be conveniently located just off the 101 freeway and Indian Bend Road. The venue is designed with a one-third mile racetrack and a unique layout where each lap begins indoors then winds through an outdoor section of the course covered by a permanent steel canopy. This is the only full-time indoor and outdoor racetrack in the United States.

“The new location in the Pavilions is a fresh and more upscale version of Octane Raceway’s proven karting entertainment concept,” says President Scott Sanders on why Octane is moving to Scottsdale. “The new, central location makes Octane Raceway more accessible to many people in the Valley, particularly providing easy access to our existing customer base in Tempe, Mesa, Chandler and Phoenix as well as puts us in the heart of Scottsdale just minutes from the Scottsdale Airpark and North Phoenix business districts.”

Adding to the allure of the new space are state-of-the-art high-speed electric karts that travel up to 45 miles per hour.

The first track in the United States to offer this model, the Sodi RTX electric kart is exclusively available at Octane Raceway at The Pavilions. Focused on delivering a great racing experience, before switching from gas to electric karts, Sanders traveled to Sodi headquarters in France to personally review and test the prototype RTX’s advanced technology and handling characteristics. Impressed with the kart’s technological advancements, Sanders confidently selected the model for the new Octane racetrack. Drivers of all sizes can expect a comfortable driving experience with fully adjustable pedals, seats and tilt steering wheels. An added emphasis on sustainability, the new karts will deliver a high performance ride with zero emissions.

The sprawling new facility covers 65,000 square feet allowing Octane to effectively host corporate clientele and social groups of up to 500 people. The novel 20,000 square feet of outdoor track and patio space gives groups flexibility to further customize their events. Corporate clientele can leverage Octane’s new flexible meeting spaces, the Indy and Daytona Rooms, to conduct meetings and presentations taking advantage of the venue’s full audiovisual capabilities. The spaces also can easily transform into the perfect setting for “lunch & learn meetings” or fully catered dinner parties.

Octane Raceway at The Pavilions boasts additional casual gathering spaces including the Billiards Room, the Trackside Bar & Grill and Victory Lounge. The Billiards Room comfortably accommodates groups of up to 50 people and includes billiards tables, foosball and a number of flat screen televisions. The on-property restaurant, Trackside Bar & Grill, serves up classic American fare including hamburgers, pizza and sandwiches with a full upscale catering menu available for group events. Domestic and imported beer and wine are available with a strict two-drink maximum enforced for kart racers.

Besides heart-pounding racing, many other activities await Octane guests. One of the most popular events at Octane Raceway is the Phoenix International Raceway Pit Crew Challenge, which is available as an additional enhancement to any of the group or team building experience packages where guests complete a full pit stop on a real NASCAR. The Segway Performance Course at Octane tests participant’s balance as they race against the clock with either an indoor or outdoor set up increasing both the challenge and fun. An interactive arcade is adjacent to the Trackside Grill for added fun for all ages.

A seamless transition is planned from the current location into the new Pavilions facility. The Phoenix location will be fully operational through March with the new location opening this spring.
