43rd Annual Scottsdale Arts Festival Offers Food, Music and Fun for All Ages

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present the 43rd annual Scottsdale Arts Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 8–10, in Scottsdale Civic Center Park.

The Scottsdale Arts Festival showcases nearly 200 jury-selected artists from throughout the United States and Canada who work in painting, sculpture, glass and ceramics, jewelry, photography and more. Works of art are available for purchase directly from the artists and through the Festival’s online art auction.

Live Music

More than 20 Arizona bands and performers will provide continuous live music and entertainment on two stages throughout the weekend, including:

  • The Blues Review Band
  • Carol Pacey and the Honey Shakers
  • C.C. Ryder Express
  • Grantman and the Island Beat
  • Los Guys
  • Mario Moreno and the Ramblers
  • Nancy McCallion and Her Wee Band

  • Sugahbeat

Food Trucks

Returning by popular demand, a dozen gourmet food trucks from the Phoenix Street Food Coalition will serve delicious world cuisine. Participating mobile eateries include:

  • The Grilled Cheese Truck
  • Hey Joe! Filipino Street Food
  • Jamburritos Cajun Grill Express
  • Luncha Libre
  • The Maine Lobster Lady
  • Mojo Bowl
  • Paletas Betty
  • Short Leash Hot Dogs
  • Spice it Up, Taste Rite!
  • Tom’s BBQ
  • Whiskey Ranch Wood-Fired Pizzas.

Also on the menu will be tastings of fine wines, beers and spirits courtesy of Young’s Market Company and Deep Eddy Vodka, cocktails and Friday happy-hour specials, and Barrie’s Original Kettle Korn.

Fun for the kids!

In collaboration with the Festival, Scottsdale Public Art will present Pink and Blue Dilemma: The Foam Incident by Baltimore artist Scott Pennington. Fun for kids and adults, this interactive work of art invites visitors to play with imagined ‘industrial waste’ made from non-toxic, water-based soap suds as Pennington’s pink-and-blue-clad ‘technicians’ attempt to contain it. Thirty-minute-long ‘foam incidents’ will occur five times a day throughout the Festival.

Exploring the theme of “The Art of Being a Kid,” Imagine Nation, the Festival’s family area, will offer participants of all ages the opportunity to connect with their inner child and engage their creativity through free arts activities, storytelling, dancing and more.

SMoCA

Throughout the Festival’s three days, admission will be free to Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), which features the exhibitions Paolo Soleri: Mesa City to Arcosanti; The Human Touch: Selections from the RBC Wealth Management Art Collection; and Mashup: New Video Art. Museum visitors will be invited to experience an “Inflatable,” a nomadic tent structure inspired by the Ant Farm, an experimental collective founded in San Francisco in 1968. Hands-on architecture-themed educational activities will be offered as well.

Taking It To The Streets On Food Truck Friday

The Phoenix public market and Food Truck Friday stimulate the community and economy.

Each Friday on Central and Fillmore, students, seniors and dressed-down businessmen and women mingle and munch at an event that not only satiates the appetite, but stimulates the economy, too — the Friday Food Truck event at the Phoenix Public Market.

In 2010, the Phoenix Street Food Coalition joined forces with the Phoenix Public Market to create the first Food Truck Friday event, which launched that November with five trucks. Since then, the event has had to adapt to the growing number of patrons.

Brad Moore, owner of Short Leash Hotdogs and founder of the Phoenix Street Food Coalition, says the number of food trucks has doubled, increasing from five to 11.

“(Food Truck Friday) has been instrumental in helping food truck owners grow their business, and I think its helped to contribute to the overall awareness and success of the Phoenix Public Market,” Moore says.

The Phoenix Public Market recently added a covered patio with family-style seating where customers are able to converse and catch some shade. Moore says, on average, about 750 customers attend each Friday; and it’s quite the diverse group, too.

“We’ve seen everything from stay-at-home moms and those in the workforce, to senior citizens taking field trips to the Market, ASU classes reserving tables and civic groups,” says Cindy Gentry, executive director of Community Food Connections. “We’ve seen quite the range of people.”

Gentry, Moore and Cindy Dach, director of Roosevelt Row, all agree that the weekly Food Truck Friday event helps strengthen the sense of community within downtown area.

“It has a significant impact,” Dach says. “The success of Phoenix relies on the experience. People want to walk and bike and see a familiar face. The Market is a catalyst for that community impact.”

Because of the growing success and popularity of the event, the Market has added Wheel Food Wednesday to its events calendar, which features about nine food trucks. They have also extended the time of Food Truck Friday an extra half hour. They’re even planning to expand the venue’s space — into the street.

“Because the event is growing and more people are attending,” Gentry says, “the next frontier is to close off the street.”
