Arizona plans road projects with reduced funding

The Arizona Department of Transportation says it will be working with $350 million less as it maps out construction projects for the next five years.

The department says the decreased funding is due to stagnant revenue from gas and vehicle license taxes, and declining federal aid. Director John Halikowski says some tough decisions will have to be made about how to spend limited dollars.

The public can begin submitting comments on three scenarios Friday. One focuses on preserving the state’s highway system, another focuses on major projects, and the third is a combination of those two.

Public hearings are planned in Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff.

The State Transportation Board is expected to adopt a final plan to cover 2014 to 2018 at its June meeting in Pinetop-Lakeside.

High Mountain Music Festival

Fresh Air, Music, And A Good Time At High Mountain Music Festival 2012

As summer seems to draw to a close, that doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Head to eastern Arizona to Pinetop-Lakeside, and on August 3 & 4, enjoy the music and atmosphere (and mid-80-degree weather!) at the High Mountain Music Festival.

On Friday, kick back, relax and participate in a Kickoff Party (sponsored by the White Mountain Radio) at the Pinetop-Lakeside Chamber from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The following day, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., enjoy the food, fun and fantastic music you’ve been craving to hear from your favorite local bands — including the Sugar Thieves, Big Daddy D and the Dynamite’s, Arrowheart, Darkness Dear Boy and more. Arts and crafts vendors will also be in attendance, and you’ll even have the chance to participate in a Macaroni and Cheese Bake-Off on Saturday.

The music festival will take place on the soccer grounds at the Mountain Meadow Recreation Complex, so feel free to bring your own chairs and/or blankets, but leave the coolers and outside food/drink at home. Advanced ticket sales are $7 with children (under 12) free, and RV spaces are available at the event as well.

Whether you’re looking for a fun weekend getaway or need to briefly escape the heat, experience the music of popular Arizona artists in the company of family and friends at this summer event that you definitely don’t want to miss. Forget the beach; a cool getaway is just a drive away at Pinetop-Lakeside.
