REDW will host Tribal Finance Conference in Scottsdale

REDW LLC, one of the Southwest’s 10 largest and most respected certified public accounting and business consulting firms and nationally recognized for its service to Tribes, announced it will host The 2015 Tribal Finance and Leadership Conference at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona on November 12th and 13th. The annual event, now in its 6th consecutive year, is organized by REDW and is exclusively designed for tribal leaders.

The keynote speaker at the conference will be Notah Begay III. A four-time PGA TOUR winner, Begay is the most accomplished Native American in the history of the PGA TOUR. Off the golf course, Begay’s commitment to working with tribal communities is undeniable. In 2002, Begay started NB3 Consulting, a full-service golf course development firm that has built some of the most highly recognized golf courses on Native lands. In 2005, Begay launched The NB3 Foundation, a federally recognized non-profit designed to battle obesity and Type 2 diabetes in Native American youth. Additionally, Begay is the founder of KivaSun Foods, a Native owned, all-natural food company with the mission of showcasing Native American sourced food products to a global audience.

The conference also features many high-level guest speakers. Among them is Dr. Veronica Tiller, a prominent historian, author, speaker and the contemporary authority on the modern-day economic life of Native American Tribes. Known as “Indian Country’s Ambassador,” Dr. Tiller recently published the Third Edition of Tiller’s Guide to Indian Country, which is hailed as the primary economic development resource for professionals working with Native Americans. Dr. Tiller will hold a special book signing following her presentation at the REDW Tribal Conference.

“Organizing this conference is part of our long-standing commitment to partnering with the tribal community. Each year, we bring together leaders and financial industry experts from tribes across the nation to discuss the unique challenges they face,” said Chris Tyhurst, REDW Principal and Chair of the REDW Tribal Conference. “REDW is proud to lead a conference that is viewed as one of the best tribal events available outside those offered by tribal associations, according to the feedback we receive from tribal participates each year. Given the speaker line up and the quality and diversity of topics, we are sure to delight our loyal tribal audience once again.”

More than 100 council members, finance and HR leaders, compliance and investment officers, attorneys and other professionals in tribal leadership roles are expected to attend this year’s conference, which will be held at the Talking Stick Resort, a tribally-owned Four Diamond casino hotel in Scottsdale.

Key Elements to Retirement Planning

REDW forms Alliance Benefit Group Southwest

REDW LLC, one of the largest and most respected certified public accounting and business consulting firms in the Southwest, has announced the formation of Alliance Benefit Group Southwest (ABG-Southwest), a separate company for retirement plan recordkeeping and third-party administration services.

The change took effect earlier this year, when all REDW team members in the group transitioned to the new organization. Its name derives from the group’s established participation in Alliance Benefit Group, a nationwide network of independently owned retirement administration firms. Collectively, Alliance Benefit Group is one of the largest retirement plan administrator networks in the country providing administration services to more than 15,000 plans representing more than $56 billion in assets and over one million participants.

“Creating a separate, sister company provides our current clients with the support and focus of a firm dedicated exclusively to meeting the needs of both plan sponsors and plan participants,” said Carol Cochran, REDW Principal also head of ABG Southwest. “As an independent, standalone firm, ABG-Southwest is able to more clearly demonstrate our commitment to provide sound advice and innovative solutions like no other retirement plan administration firm in our marketplace.”

Dennis Davis, ABG-Southwest Senior Manager, added, “The same, highly skilled team of professionals in Albuquerque and Phoenix who assisted our clients under the REDW name for more than two decades are continuing to serve them. Creating the separate company simply makes it easier to create program enhancements and service offerings for clients – and assures them we are truly focused on their needs.”

“This move by REDW shows the power of the Alliance Benefit Group brand that’s been built by some of the nation’s leading recordkeeping firms over the past 22 years,” said Don Mackanos, President of Alliance Benefit Group. “Since joining the ABG network, I have had the privilege to get to know the leadership team of REDW Benefits, now ABG-Southwest.  They are highly regarded as a forward-thinking, results-oriented retirement plan firm with a strong commitment to delivering customized solutions to meet the unique needs of their clients. As the need to retain and attract top talent becomes increasingly more critical, ABG-Southwest is the firm companies want to have on their side.”

“This not a merger, acquisition or other change of ownership,” Cochran noted. “In addition, this name change does not affect the accounting services offered by REDW. We expect ABG-Southwest to grow as prospective clients who need retirement plan administration services – but not the traditional accounting services offered by REDW – engage the new firm.”

Among the first new programs and enhancements planned by ABG-Southwest are:

  • A new ABG-Southwest Web site (ABGSW.com) dedicated to client needs
  • Enhancements to plan participants’ Web site experience
  • SmartDollar, a new financial-wellness education package designed to engage and inspire employees to take control of their finances

IPA released its annual 200 largest public accounting firms ranking on August 21, 2014. The rankings were compiled by net revenues, using data gathered by IPA’s survey and analysis of firms, which attracted a record number of participants, at more than 540 firms. “This prestigious group joins the IPA 100 as the definitive ranking of the nation’s largest public accounting firms,” says Kelly Platt, principal of The Platt Group, the publisher of IPA.

“Similar to their IPA 100 peers, the IPA 200 are also engaged in acquisitions to grow in size, scope and capability, with 21 mergers reported for the group last year, pulling more than 200 staff and more than $22 million into the aggregate numbers of the group,” says Kelly Platt. “Recognition for our size is nice but we’re much more focused and excited about what our strategic growth of REDW during the last several years represents to our client and team members,” said Ron Rivera, Managing Principal of REDW. “A client that once only looked to us for primarily tax or audit services in Albuquerque can now utilize REDW in Phoenix and other markets for a wide range of additional services including valuation, forensic accounting, HR consulting, wealth management and even accounting software. Our strategic growth is also excellent for our talented staff as it provides greater stability and internal career growth opportunities, which only further benefit our clients.”

“Our clients view our growth as an expansion of the ways we can serve them,” said Sandy Abalos, Principal-in-Charge of the Phoenix office. “As our clients continue to grow and their needs expand and evolve, REDW has grown in concert to ensure that our capabilities and expertise continue to meet all their needs and exceed their expectations.”

Earlier in the year, Accounting Today announced that REDW was the fifth largest regional firm in the Southwestern U.S., and the fourth fastest growing firm nationally. In recent months, REDW was ranked the #2 accounting firm in Arizona by Who’s Who in Business in the category accounting firms with 29 or fewer CPAs.
