Annual Social Media Day returns to Phoenix

On Tuesday, June 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Social Media Day Phoenix (#SMDayPHX) will be returning for its 6th annual celebration of all things social media at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel. From learning about content creation and specific social media apps, like Instagram, to tools to assist with engagement and hearing from local influencers, attendees will enjoy a full day of activities in open forums, ending with a happy hour and networking party.

Hosted by QtheBrand, a Phoenix-based digital marketing agency specializing in social media, SEO, web development and branding, owner MoniQue Hoffman states, “We’ve expanded the event format this year to really delve deep into some trending topics that were of particular interest to attendees. There will be something for both novices and social media experts alike, but the main goal of the day’s events is to bring the local digital community together in an offline atmosphere to celebrate everything we love about the online experience.”

As an event first created by tech giant Mashable in 2010 as a way to celebrate and highlight the ways social media and digital innovation have come to define a generation and make an impact on global communications, #SMDay has since grown into a worldwide celebration.

HSMAI prepares for Chinese Auction Fundraiser

The Arizona Chapter of the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) will present the 33rd Annual Chinese Auction Fundraiser & Dinner, celebrating the “Year of the Sheep,” on Friday, June 26, 2015 the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel, beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Proceeds from this award winning event will help to support our association’s mission and our continuing efforts to provide quality continuing education and scholarships for those professionals currently in the hospitality industry and those who are pursuing a career in the field.

In addition, funds will help support HSMAI’S 2015 “Charity of the Year”. Kitchen on the Street is a faith-based, volunteer driven, nonprofit organization that “turns hunger into hope … one child at a time”. KOS fills the gap – and the stomachs – of children experiencing hunger and poverty. Through partnerships with Arizona schools, KOS provides self-stable, individually portioned meals and snacks for weekend consumption. HSMAI is a global organization of sales and marketing professionals representing all segments of the hospitality industry. Founded in 1927, HSMAI is comprised of nearly 7,000 members from 35 countries and chapters worldwide. HSMAI’s mission is to “grow business for hotels and their partners by fueling sales, inspiring marketing and optimizing revenue”.

The 250 member Arizona Chapter was established in 1968 and is the third largest chapter in the U.S. Additionally, the Arizona Chapter was recently honored by HSMAI with a “Best of the Best” award and was recognized as HSMAI’s “Chapter of the Year” in 2011. The chapter offers members a variety of benefits including monthly education programs targeted specifically to sales and marketing and revenue management professionals, a variety of networking and fundraising events and community service volunteer opportunities.

The Chinese Auction is a unique fundraiser combining a silent auction with a live auction.  Each guest receives a list of items to be sold in a live auction and a paddle with an individualized number. Each guest “bids” on an item by placing a quarter in the bucket placed at the center of each table. An auctioneer travels through the dinner announcing numbers indicated on each guests paddle until a Chinese gong is rung.  The number last mentioned before the gong wins the prize.  Money is raised through the through the quarters bid on each item by each guest, the silent auction preceding the dinner and a live bidding auction. This unique auction was conceived by the Arizona Chapter and has been adopted by chapters all over the U.S. 350 meeting and hospitality industry members will attend and support the event. This event has been honored with numerous awards including a “Stars of the Industry” award presented by the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association.

Prizes include golf outings, artwork, gift certificates for goods and services, signed sports memorabilia and weekend getaways to various destinations throughout the U.S., Hawaii and Mexico.

Jaburg Wilk Attorney to Present at Social Media Day

Jaburg Wilk attorney Laura Rogal will be presenting at the fourth annual Social Media Day Phoenix on June 28th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel.

Rogal will present the first seminar: “The Not-So-Fine Line of Social Media & Copyright Infringement.” In this presentation, she will discuss the potential legal issues associated with using content from public websites on one’s social platforms. She will share best practice suggestions for avoiding problems online associated with defamation, copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and brand protection. Rogal will give the attendees a forum to ask questions and will parlay real-world experience into scalable scenarios for all users of social media.

Rogal assists clients with their intellectual property legal needs including internet law, social media, domain disputes and commercial litigation.

Other speakers include Kevin Spidel, director of agency services at Voice Media Group as well as Allison Michaels of Yammer/Microsoft, Monique Shaldjian of QtheBrand and Jim Simmons with CDS Insurance Agency. Following the sessions, participants will network and socialize.
