Arizona Biltmore Remodeled Classic King

Renovation transforms iconic Arizona Biltmore

The legendary Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort has completed a major renovation that has significantly enhanced the guest experience and restored the iconic property’s competitive position in the Phoenix/Scottsdale luxury resort marketplace.

The multi-million-dollar renovation has created modern, refined accommodations and public spaces while preserving the historic architecture and design that distinguish the grand dame of Phoenix.  Guest rooms and suites, the spa and salon, and meeting spaces – including ballrooms, pre-function rooms and the Mystery Room, the Prohibition-era “speakeasy” that is used for themed events – have been re-mastered with a sophisticated new look that recalls the seductive style of the resort’s early years. The redesign is chic and contemporary, while continuing the original Frank Lloyd Wright style of organically incorporating the natural environment.

The revamp of the landmark property also comprised rebuilding and redesigning the 15 cabanas at the Paradise Pool that now feature luxurious new interior décor and an array of amenities, from flatscreen HDTVs to full baths. Refinements were also made to the service culture and communications tools were re-imagined, including instituting True Waldorf Service, new uniforms for the front-of-the-house team, a new website and a glossy new, comprehensive history book that recounts the storied lore of the famous property.

“With the renovation we have enhanced our classic luxury with chic modern interpretations and recaptured our top-tier status in the Phoenix-Scottsdale resort marketplace,” said Sheila Foley, General Manager.

In the guest rooms, a soft color palette of mist, linen and latte created a light and cheerful ambiance, juxtaposed with contrasting warm wood colors that emulate the natural tones of the surrounding desert. Specialty glass tops on bureaus in a thick mist color bring the soothing atmosphere of a desert oasis indoors. Echoing the distinctive use of metals in the original hotel design, bronze and gold metal accents in the guest rooms evoke a distinguished vintage ambiance.  A particularly memorable feature, bringing a special touch of elegance and grandeur, are the mist-colored wall coverings embossed with a metallic Frank Lloyd Wright design, echoing the historic pattern on the Biltmore Blocks used to construct the entire resort.

Frank Lloyd Wright drawings of the hotel gardens, blended with geometric shapes, were the innovative inspiration for the new carpet in the corridors, creating an avant-garde historic interpretation. This contemporary merging of Wright designs and geometric patterns was the theme as well for the Frank Lloyd Wright and McArthur ballrooms, which were refreshed with new carpet, wall coverings, artwork and furniture. The ballrooms and their pre-function areas also were enhanced with technologically advanced production, signage and lighting capabilities.

The renovation was directed by Santa Barbara-based Smith & Firestone Associates (SFA), a leading international luxury hospitality interior design firm. www.SFAdesign.com

Carondelet completes $17 Million Renovation

After a year of renovation and construction, the Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute (CHVI) will celebrate its official opening this month. The $17 million project is part of a major expansion of Carondelet Health Network’s heart program on both Carondelet St. Mary’s and Carondelet St. Joseph’s campuses. Nine of the 20 cardiac and vascular specialists employed by Carondelet have joined the Network this past year.

CHVI is located on the first and third floors of St. Mary’s Hospital. The Institute includes a dedicated Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit; a 21-bed, all private room progressive care unit; a 34-bed telemetry unit; two cardiac catheterization labs; three dedicated operating suites; an electrophysiology suite with cardiac arrhythmia ablation capability; and an endovascular surgical suite for complex aneurysm repair.

“We are so proud to offer Southern Arizonans the very latest in cardiac and vascular care technologies, coupled with one of the most highly skilled teams of physicians, surgeons and nurses,” said Dr. Amy Beiter, president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Hospital. “Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute is truly an extraordinary combination of high-tech and high-touch care.”

One highlight of the new Institute is the hybrid operating suite—a cardiac catheterization lab and cardiothoracic operating room combined. This OR is equipped with ambient lighting, high-tech equipment that dramatically reduces radiation exposure for patients and physicians, and video streaming—making it the only hybrid OR of its kind in the nation. The design of the hybrid OR streamlines workflow and creates a more relaxing environment. It offers clear sightlines and open spaces, reducing a patient’s potential sense of isolation. Clinical studies have shown that, in this specific environment, patients who remain awake during surgery require less medication for anxiety than in traditional surgical environments.

The hybrid OR is also equipped with the highest quality X-ray imaging for optimal visualization during complex surgical procedures. Lastly, this modern surgical environment will serve as a remote classroom, producing streaming video that will allow physicians and medical students anywhere in the world to observe and learn new techniques and procedures.

“The vision of Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute is to be nationally recognized as a premier destination for modern cardiovascular care through clinical excellence, research and physician education,” said Michael Hecht, MD and chief medical officer of Carondelet Specialist Group. “Our expert medical team has formed a unique collaboration to provide the highest quality, most comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients.”

St. Mary’s has received several national recognitions for quality patient care in the last few years. It has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence, a Distinguished Hospital for Critical Care and is among the top 100 hospitals in the nation for stroke care.1 St. Mary’s has also achieved the Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing it among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for quality and safety. A Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center, St. Mary’s was also honored in 2013 by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association with a Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care.

Rolfs Salon Celebrates 25 Years With Multi-Million Dollar Redesign

Inspired by the fashion capitals of Europe, Rolfs Salon at Gainey Village is setting a new standard of luxury with a redesign.

In honor of its 25th anniversary, Rolfs is celebrating by revealing a new, multi-million dollar national flagship salon in Scottsdale. An event will be held to dedicate the project.

“The purpose of the design is to bring a new global standard,” said Rolf Lohse, founder of Rolfs Salon. “We focused on creating a design that was edgy, modern and delicately balanced comfort, warmth, freshness, and timeless elegance.”

Rolf was inspired by some of the world’s top fashion capitals: Milan (modern/architectural), Paris (elegance/class), and London (hip/edgy). The salon is the epitome of European luxury.

Rolf designed the salon to embrace global beauty and fashion. The new design influences the client’s imagination, strength, inner beauty and glamour. Rolf wanted everyone to feel comfortable in the design and selected colors, textures and features that would appeal to stylish and fashion-forward thinking men and women.

Rolf featured specific pieces from around the world to reflect international beauty.

“I wanted to redefine the client experience – beyond the haircut, beyond the hair color – I want to connect my clients to global fashion and style,” he said.

Amenities include a Social Lounge and VIP/Bridal Suite, equipped with Skype and iPads and ready to cater to professional clients on the go. The Social Lounge allows clients to instantly connect with friends and family in real time.

Clients can showcase their new looks by taking professional photos, which are uploaded and shared via the Rolfs Salon Facebook page. Brides can celebrate their day in a very intimate, fun way with the people they love in their own private suite.

“We believe the bridal service in the salon sets the tone for the wedding day so we created this lounge to allow our brides to be treated to a luxurious, VIP environment,”  Lohse said.

Rolfs will also feature the Iqonic Institute, transforming its spa area into a luxurious, German-engineered skin center.

Amara Resort & Spa Completes $2M Renovation

Amara Resort & Spa in Sedona recently completed a $2M renovation that upgraded the resort’s 100 guest rooms, pool, restaurant, outdoor event space, fitness center, lobby and other areas.

One of the largest elements of the resort’s facelift included the addition of a 26,000-gallon infinity pool. The negative edge overlooks Oak Creek with Sedona’s signature red rocks providing a serene backdrop. The year-round pool also features a 12-person spa and three contemporary cabanas.

The renovation, which kicked off in 2Q and was completed in September, was done in phases to ensure that the resort could stay open during the construction and that guests were not disturbed during the process.

The architect overseeing the renovation was Dana Foley; the pool and courtyard were completed by Creative Environment.

“Amara is widely known and recognized for its chic and modern style and amenities, and it was important to us to keep the resort’s style as fresh as possible,” said Laurie Johnson, director of sales and marketing at Amara.

“The resort was originally built in 2003, so the renovations add that perfect contemporary touch that will continually help us stand out to guests who are looking for modern luxury in Sedona.”

Each of the 100 guest rooms and suites received a crown molding installation, upgraded bathroom furniture and fixtures, fresh carpeting and new signature bedding décor elements. Many of the resort’s rooms overlook the red rocks and have views or patios over Oak Creek.

Hundred Rox, the resort’s American-fusion restaurant, also received a full makeover including new carpet, tables and chairs, bar cabinets and countertops, and updated art installations. The outdoor area of the restaurant was also updated with soothing water features and romantic fire pits – all overlooking the infinity pool and red rocks.

The outdoor event space, most often used for weddings, was relocated to better capitalize on the stunning view. The lobby was also updated with new tile, furniture, modern check-in kiosks, a convenient business center and a gift shop.

Amara is a popular destination for leisure and business travelers, with its prime location that is just a 2-minute walk from Uptown Sedona. Amara also features one of the top spas in America, and is the only nationally recognized spa in Sedona that is also open to the public along with resort guests. Amara is managed by Prism Hotels & Resorts.
