GPEC announces Board of Directors for FY 2014

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) today announced the appointment of its Board of Directors for the 2014 fiscal year, as approved by the Executive Committee.

Alliance Bank of Arizona CEO James Lundy will continue to lead the Board of Directors as chairman.

“As the economy continues to improve, GPEC’s team of results-driven board directors will work to ensure the region not only maintains its trajectory but also pushes toward a more diversified and sustainable economy that is less dependent on growth industries like real estate and construction,” Lundy said. “I’m honored to work with this talented group of professionals and look forward to a productive year.”

Rounding out the Board’s leadership is SCF Arizona President and CEO Don Smith and Empire Southwest Executive Vice President Chris Zaharis as vice chairs, APS Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Tammy McLeod as secretary and Bryan Cave, LLP Partner R. Neil Irwin as treasurer.

Lavidge Launches National Campaign with Dole

The Lavidge Company (TLC), a full-service advertising, public relations, communications, consulting and interactive marketing agency, and Dole® Food Company have partnered in developing the summer “Peel the Love” campaign.

TLC edged out national agencies with its Peel the Love campaign idea and was selected to lead the concept, design and messaging standards of the year-long Dole campaign. The Peel the Love theme focuses on the fun, versatility and universally loved aspects of the iconic yellow fruit, which Dole grows more of globally than anyone else. The campaign is playful and modern, utilizing vibrant, summer colors, that invites people to Peel like a kid again. Dole. Peel the love.

TLC’s team created the overall campaign concept, developed the messaging and visual direction, and worked on in-store promotional materials including posters and special recipe cards. Additionally, the agency oversaw the production of the campaign standards guide, working in collaboration with Dole’s public relations and interactive agencies that extended the campaign through additional channels.

A feature of the Peel the Love campaign is the Peel the Love Summer Food Truck tour that will be visiting banana-loving cities across the country. The brightly colored Peel the Love food truck, featuring TLC designs, is staffed by healthy-eating advocates and will stop at supermarkets, parks and other venues to dispense samples and recipes that use DOLE Bananas in fun ways. The truck will be making several stops in Phoenix, Arizona and surrounding areas from June 27 through July 6. Dates, times and truck stop locations can be found at www.dole.com/peelthelove.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE ANNOUNCES 2013 YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Arcadia High School junior Jessica DuBois has been selected as the 2013 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Youth of the Year.

DuBois, 16, is a member of the Hartley & Ruth Baker Branch, which is located in south Scottsdale. She has been involved in a variety of educational and community service programs since joining the Club more than five years ago and is an active community volunteer, logging more than 90 hours of service in recent months.

Jessica - 2013 YOYAt the Club, she is a dedicated member of several programs, including:

  • Smart Girls, which is a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem program for girls ages eight to 17 designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential. She also serves as a mentor to younger girls entering the program.
  • What’s Hip, which is an eight-week program for high school girls covering issues such as relationships, drug and alcohol use, self-esteem, and fashion, among others. The program culminates with a fashion show at the Rose Lane Branch.
  • eCrew, which is a program developed in partnership with Arizona State University, C4 Systems, where General Dynamics’ engineers mentor Club members and provide them with the tools and knowledge needed to potentially become engineers and business leaders.

The Youth of the Year program has been an integral part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for more than 60 years and is the highest honor given to members of the organization. This annual program begins in January when each of the Scottsdale Clubs’ nine area branches, which are located in Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Salt River Pima-Maricopa and Hualapai Indian Communities and other Northeast Valley neighborhoods, crown their own Youth of the Year honoree. Each of these members are chosen based on their dedication to the Club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals, leadership, poise and public speaking ability.

From there, each of the nine branch Youths of the Year undergo a two-month judging process, which culminates with the kids being honored and then giving a speech during the Celebrate Youth Gala & Auction, the non-profits biggest fundraising event of the year.

Presented by Tiffany & Bosco and Great American Title, the annual gala, which took place on March 9 at Talking Stick Resort and Casino Arizona, included a dinner, silent and live auctions, paddle raiser, and live entertainment by Club members.

Katie 1During the gala, DuBois shared her dream of becoming a pediatric nurse one day – a dream much closer thanks to her Youth of the Year prizes, which included a $5,000 scholarship from General Dynamics C4 Systems, a laptop from NPCE Technology Solutions and a Young Leadership Training scholarship from U & Improved.

Her eight fellow branch Youths of the Year were also rewarded during the gala, each receiving a $1,000 scholarship from General Dynamics C4 Systems and Google tablets from NPCE Technology Solutions. They included: Ariana Alvez, Samantha Elder, Amari Gonzales, Dani Haboush, Alexa Jenouri, Marissa Masters, Kristofferson Walker and Lane Yazzie.

This event caps off a whirlwind 12 months for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, which also included:

  • The Clubs’ Lehi Branch, which serves youth from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, finishing construction and hosting the grand opening of its new $50,000 Teen Center, which includes a performance stage, upgraded fitness equipment, a computer lab, décor improvements and a painted mural representing the Native American culture.
  • The Club’s Red Mountain Branch, which also serves youth from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, being honored with a National Award of Merit for Program Excellence in Health & Life Skills from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
  • The Club’s Vestar Branch, which serves youth from the Desert Ridge and North Phoenix areas, being named the top branch in the nation by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale will honor its 2013 Youth of the Year branch winners at its annual Celebrate Youth Gala & Auction on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Talking Stick Resort.

Presented by Tiffany & Bosco and Great American Title, the annual gala includes a dinner, silent and live auctions, paddle raiser, and live entertainment by Club members.

The highlight of the evening will be hearing each of the nine branch’s Youth of the Year honoree give inspiring speeches, followed by one of the teens being named the 2013 Overall Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Youth of the Year – the highest honor given to a member of the organization.

Each year, all of the greater-Scottsdale Clubs have the honor of taking their teens served through the Youth of the Year nomination program, with one overall teen being honored as their branch’s Youth of the Year.

This year’s branch-by-branch honorees are:

ASU Center becomes a resource to teach service

Customer service was once viewed as the cost of doing business.

“Across almost every industry, leaders are focusing on service as a way to compete in today’s competitive marketplace,” says Mary Jo Bitner, academic director for the Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business.

But times have changed. Companies that are in search of new revenue streams are finding that in addition to providing great customer service, offering value-added services to their product lines are helping their bottom lines. And the help them make the most of the opportunities, many are seeking help from the ASU Center, which focuses on research and executive education in managing and marketing services.

“Customer demand and the competitive challenges posed by the commoditization of many products has pushed many goods-based companies to take another look at services as a source of revenue and profit,” says Stephen Brown, director of the Center for Services Leadership, who has spent the past 20 years tracking the growing importance of services as a product. “Many are following market leaders to become goods-and-services companies.”

For example, Boeing has broadened its offerings by adding the lucrative market of services to its aircraft manufacturing. The Hewlett Packard and Compaq merger created a new company whose major product is services. IBM’s impressive financials over the past decade — in shining contrast to its competitors — were largely the result of its service businesses.

“In 2001, we were launching our first fee-based service business,” says Steve Church, president of Avnet Integrated and chief corporate business development and planning officer. “We wanted to offer more services and solutions. We knew a lot, but there was a lot we didn’t know.”

Church says Avnet’s membership in the center — which concentrates on expanding service innovation by combining the latest scientific insights from the academic world with the best of business strategy in the real world — allowed the company to “build a culture of service excellence that focuses on the customer and gives each a great customer experience.”

The Center, which was created in 1985, remains the only one of its kind in the United States, devoted to research and education in the services field.  Its research findings form the foundation of the Center’s executive education program, attended by managers and executives of leading firms.  Member companies include AT&T, Charles Schwab and Co., Ford Motor Company, IBM, Mayo Clinic and others, who sponsor research, fund scholarships, host MBA student teams and participate in executive education.

Many member companies sponsor research that is published in academic journals, and shared at the Center’s executive education forums. Bitner, for example, has been studying the effects of self-service technologies (SST), working with Ford and a major pharmaceutical benefits management company.

“The Center is really a tremendous resource for any company that has a strategy to to improve customer serve or add services to augment its products,” Church says. “We learned that by getting our employees engaged in customer service, we built customer loyalty, it helped us compete, and it enhanced our financial performance.”

Twelve categories, hundreds of nominations — but only one will take home the green. It’s the first annual Southwest Build-it-Green Awards, where BIG teamed up with the USGBC to bring you the leanest sustainable leaders and projects in Arizona.

CarbonFree Technology campaigns for the use of green energy solutions throughout the United States and North America. The company, which was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Ontario, Canada, is a solar power project developer. It helps businesses and institutional customers develop solar power solutions for their energy needs.

CarbonFree Technology’s 2009 merger with SolEquity allowed it to increase its potential. The company negotiated the first successful implementation of a solar power purchase agreement in Arizona. This deal allowed Arizona State University to create a leadership position in its sustainability programs through the financing of two solar rooftop top installation and one rooftop. These installations create more than 1.5 megawatts of solar power. The ASU solar installations also are a visual reminder of the power of creativity and environmental responsibility that CarbonFree Technology champions.

CarbonFree Technology recommends appropriate solar solutions and securs available government incentives based upon each individual project. The company’s other duties include managing project construction, arranging financing, finding contractors to build the system and arranging monitoring and maintenance for the life of the system.

Republic Services not only provides trash collection services, it also derives useable energy from its landfills. Headquartered in Phoenix with 34,000 employees in 40 states and Puerto Rico, Republic Services has continually striven to be an industry leader since its founding in 1998.

The company has 74 landfill gas-to-energy projects nationwide, in more than one-third of its landfills.  Landfill gas is methane produced by organic materials as it decomposes in landfills.  After it is captured, the gas can be converted to an alternative fuel source for cars or to generate heat, steam, and electricity, among other things.  These landfill gas-to-energy projects combine to produce the equivalent of removing four million cars from the road.

Landfill gas-to-energy projects have economic impacts as well as beneficial environmental impacts.  These projects create jobs for professionals from engineers to equipment vendors.  Along with the landfill gas conversion, the company continues to research, develop and implement environmentally friendly technologies.
