35th Annual Scottsdale Culinary Festival Events Schedule

The lineup has been released for the 35th Annual Scottsdale Culinary Festival April 9 – April 14. Mark your calendars for a week of culinary satisfaction and new events for 2013 including a Cupcake Challenge at Bubbles & Bliss and the Take the Cake Decorating Competition at the Wine Country Brunch.

Since 2002, Scottsdale Culinary Festival has raised over $3.5 million to benefit arts and arts education charities. The event has been voted “Best Annual Event” By AZCentral.com and Arizona Foothills Magazine in 2012.

Shaken and StirredTuesday, April 9 – Shaken & Stirred: Shake up your Tuesday night with flavor profiles that only a celebrity chef could create. Shaken & Stirred is a riveting celebration of cocktail culture with Chef Brian Malarkey and his latest addition to his culinary empire, Searsucker Scottsdale. In its second year, guests will be able to enjoy three signature Searsucker drinks and the perfect nibbles to match. $40 per person.

Chocolate and WineWednesday, April 10 – The Chocolate & Wine Experience: Imagine if Wonka’s Chocolate Factory was situated in Napa Valley and you were granted an exclusive tasting – a night worthy of a golden ticket that would bring together life’s sweetest indulgences and most robust flavors. Fantasy becomes reality at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival’s Chocolate & Wine Experience. The Valley’s finest pastry chefs and chocolatiers will unite with an incredible selection of wineries at Talking Stick Resort’s Fire Garden. $50 per person.

bubbles and blissThursday, April 11 – Bubbles & Bliss: Pop a bottle, take a sip and stroll around W Scottsdale’s glamorous rooftop WET pool deck. Take a break to say ‘ahhh’ with the Bliss Spa Squad who will be distributing spa-at-home samples and providing complimentary arm massages. Providing the “frosting on the cake” so to speak, will be the Cupcake Challenge. This sweet addition to the annual soiree will have cupcake creators going spatula-to-spatula, as they showcase the best of their wares and voted on by guests. $40 per person.

burger battleThursday, April 11 – Burger Battle: Sixteen of the Valley’s best chefs and restaurants will be grilling up burgers flavors you can’t even fathom. The battle will begin behind the grill, but it’s up to guests and the panel of judges to decide who will take home the trophy home along with unlimited bragging rights. With entry into Scottsdale Stadium, guests can indulge in all the burger samples they can eat, sip on ice cold Leinenkugel’s beer and enjoy live music by The Walkens. $55 per person.

EDBPFriday, April 12 – Eat Drink and Be Pretty: Guests can stay in vogue with Scottsdale’s culinary scene as twenty restaurants showcase their creations. Around 8:30pm, Caribe Devine of 12News will take the stage and introduce a high-energy runway fashion show by Caché, which will forecast the latest trends and must-haves of the season. Once your appetite for fashion is satisfied, there will be music from DJ P-Body inside the atrium and Las Vegas show band True to Life will perform outside the building. $75 per person.

Chef dinnersSaturday, April 13 – Chef Wine Dinners: One of Scottsdale Culinary Festival’s most exclusive and intimate culinary experiences, guests will join award-winning chefs at some of the Valley’s top restaurants for a series of exclusive four-course dinners paired with rich wines. Both the chef and winemaker will be on-hand to answer questions and talk about the pairings. Attendance will be limited to 24 attendees per restaurant. $125 per person.

Saturday’s lineup includes major culinary firepower, including Brian Malarkey, host of ABC’s breakout new reality show The Taste, plus Food Network’s Robin Miller and globally-awarded chef Jose Garces. New at the expo for 2013 is the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame, an annual event previously invite-only. Watch as awards are given to the Chef of the Year, Restaurateur of the Year, Beverage Master of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement. Southwest Festival of BeersTM provides samplings of over 200 frosty beers, delicious food and special musical entertainment

Searsucker Scottsdale's New American Dishes With A Twist Are A Hit

Only at Searsucker Scottsdale is it possible for the food to overshadow the fact that I both shook Brian Malarkey’s San Diego-tanned hand and exclaimed in my starstruck stammer that “Everything is incredible!” at least three times when he made his rounds that typical Tuesday night. As someone who obsessively watches Top Chef (even during my lunch hour if I happen to miss an episode), Searsucker quickly made its way to the top of my “eateries I must try” list.

The restaurant

Nestled on the corner of Camelback and Goldwater, Searsucker Scottsdale has found an appropriate home at Scottsdale Fashion Square. The warehouse-chic interior is comprised of distressed furniture and oversized drum lamp shapes, exposed ceiling beams, lumber-embellished windows, and entwined ropes and light bulbs dangling from fixtures above various tables and seating areas in the restaurant.

Searsucker’s environment alone appeals to a diverse crowd, the restaurant capable of suiting any type of occasion — from a girls’ or guys’ night out to a romantic dinner for two. And I noticed just that during my visit, even mid-week.

But what was most apparent to me was just how comfortable the open environment made me, and the rest of the patrons, feel. The tables were arranged in a way that didn’t make everyone feel as though we were literally rubbing elbows with one another, the lighting Searsucker Scottsdalewas dimmed perfectly, couches were abound, and the music was at a level low enough to hear the person next to you. The only way to complement such a homey atmosphere is by pairing it with comfort food, which is exactly what Searsucker Scottsdale’s menu consists of.

The menu

Searsucker’s menu, divided into categories like Bites, Smalls, Greens, Ocean, Ranch and Farm, Searsucker Scottsdaleconsists of classic New American dishes with a twist.

After scanning the menu at least five times over, simultaneously munching on the cheddar-cheese-stuffed and cayenne-seasoned cheddar puffers ($2) served to us upon arrival, I’m almost positive our waitress was familiar with our overwhelmed and indecisive response to the menu and immediately began pointing out the more popular items. Due to the very impressive speed at which she spoke about every possible detail of the dishes, we trusted she wouldn’t let us down, and we opted for her suggestions.

The most popular cocktail? The Indian Summer. You can’t get more American than this with its fresh-pressed apple Searsucker Scottsdalejuice mixed with Grey Goose La Poire — delicious!

‘Smalls’/starters

As I slowly made a dent in my Indian Summer, savoring every sip, a large spoon was set on our table, soon followed by our “small bites”: the shrimp “spicy” + bacon grits ($12). This popular appetizer boasts a handful of Cajun-seasoned shrimp swimming in the bacon-buttermilk-and-cheese grits. We finished that so quickly, we could have had seconds and thirds, easily.

Main entrees

Once our plates were taken and my Indian Summer finally came to an end, it was time for our main entrees: the loin “filet” with lobster butter + cognac ($35) and the duck X’s 3 breast + confit + orange ($26). Flavorful and juicy in the center, the hearty filet mignon and its cognac paired perfectly with our two sides — the jalapeno-chorizo “corn off the cobb” ($6) and the fried brussels + walnuts ($7). With the cognac on the sweeter side, the spiciness of the “corn off the cob” complemented the filet well. As for the brussels, which is the most popular item on the menu, these were the most lively, bold and mouthwatering sprouts I’ve ever had. Pair the filet with a cabernet, and you’re set.

Searsucker Scottsdale was a definite hit for me and my dinner companion. Malarkey may have been a Top Chef finalist, but Searsucker is a winner. But who am I kidding? Head there, and you be the judge.

Searsucker Scottsdale To Donate 100% Of Proceeds To Rockaway Hurricane Relief Fund

Hurricane Sandy has left the east coast has left countless in need — and one local restaurant is giving back to help support those affected by the superstorm: Searsucker Scottsdale.

After celebrating its grand opening just last week, Searsucker Scottsdale is combining efforts with its parent company, Enlightened Hospitality Group, to provide aid to those in need in Rockaway, N.Y. — the hometown of Enlightened’s CEO James Brennan — and neighboring Breezy Point.

This Friday, November 2, Searsucker Scottsdale will donate 100 percent of all proceeds to the Rockaway Hurricane Relief Fund. One-hundred percent of all funds donated will go directly to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Patrons can help support the relief effort at Searsucker Scottsdale by visiting the restaurant on Friday, Nov. 2 for:

  • lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
  • happy hour from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.,
  • or dinner from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Those who are unable to dine at Searsucker Scottsdale can donate online. Visit the Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego’s website, and enter “ROCKAWAY HURRICANE” in the section titled “In Honor Of”.
