Cinco de Mayo, Thinkstock, WEB

Tastes of Cinco de Mayo

Although Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, but rather a small win for the Mexican army in Puebla against the French in the Franco-Mexican War, the holiday is recognized in the United States as a day of awareness and celebration of Mexican culture. Many restaurants provide special menus with Mexican-inspired cocktails and appetizers as well as mariachi music, folk dancing and parties. Hopefully there will be enough limes to support all those margaritas and guacamole!

This weekend, starting with Saturday, May 3, through Monday, May 5, provides a multitude of Cinco de Mayo options such as:

Mexican Food

  • America’s Taco Shop: If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, you have to visit America’s Taco Shop. They will be serving a traditional Mexican dish – Al Pastor – a slow-cooked, thinly sliced pork, marinated in a mild spiced citrus and pasilla adobo and served with minced cabbage, cilantro, tomato sauce, guacamole and thin strips of grilled pineapple.

Margaritas

  • SOL Mexican Cocina: Looking for the perfect margarita? SOL Mexican Cocina’s Corralejo Watermelon Basil Margarita is simply fruity perfection. Combine that with guacamole and Baja cuisine and you are ready for a great Cinco de Mayo.
  • The Herb Box: Drink without the calories? Try the $5 Skinny Superfruit Margarita at The Herb Box. The drink includes Herradura Blanco, Chambord, fresh lime juice and club soda. The Herb Box will also release its new Drinx menu with all day happy hour pricing. Try 10 new cocktails for $8 such as the Vanilla Lemon Drop or Nutty Angel. They will also be serving wine and craft beer.

Parties and New Experiences

  • Sandbar: If you are looking for a full-weekend experience, then Sandbar is your place. The three-day party will include live music and DJs, the Mayweather vs. Maidana fight and, of course, drink specials. Music includes Rockhard and Whiskey’s Quicker on Saturday, The Crown Kings and Pyrosteria on Sunday and Jay Allen and The Uncommon Good and Redneck Rockstars on Monday. You can get your drink on with $3 beers and $5 margaritas all weekend long.
  • Uptown Alley: Try an entirely new Cinco de Mayo experience with the entertainment venue of Uptown Alley. You can eat and drink Mexican-inspired items like $3 tecates, $5 tacos and $5 margaritas while you go bowling, play video games or dominate at laser tag.
  • Sprinkles Cupcakes: If you are really looking to try something new this weekend, you have to try the margarita cupcake from Sprinkles Cantina. This inspired cupcake is composed of a tequila-key lime cake, topped with key lime frosting, a rim of fleur de sel and a festive green and red modern dot. This item is sure to make your Cinco de Mayo party unique.

Sprinkles Cupcakes Launches Candace’s Cupcake Challenge with Local Schools

Rev those egg beaters and prep your taste buds for some delicious fundraising, Scottsdale!

Sprinkles Cupcakes announced today that it has launched Candace’s Cupcake Challenge, a recipe contest that invites elementary students throughout Maricopa County to submit cupcake recipes that will be sold in Sprinkles’ Scottsdale bakery.

Phoenix-area classrooms are being asked to submit their cake and frosting recipes to Sprinkles by Friday, February 7. Candace Nelson, Sprinkles founder and judge on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” will then select her three favorite recipes which will be baked and sold at Sprinkles Scottsdale from February 24 to 28. All three winning schools will receive a monetary donation and cupcake prizes.

“We are so excited to offer Arizona school kids the opportunity to think creatively, learn more about baking and how ingredients work together, and inspire any budding entrepreneurs out there,” said Nelson. “We think that giving students a chance to see their creations selling in the real marketplace in a way that will also give back to their school, will spark a real sense of pride and achievement.”

The three winning recipes will be chosen by Nelson based on originality and taste and announced on February 12th. Phoenix-area residents will have the opportunity to “vote” for their favorite flavor by purchasing the cupcakes at the Sprinkles located at 4501 N. Scottsdale Road. The top selling cupcake will receive a $1,000 cash donation to the school and a cupcake party for the entire school. The second and third best selling cupcakes will each receive a cupcake party for the submitting classroom and cash donations to the school for $500 and $250 respectively.

Sprinkles Cupcakes, Red Ribbon Cupcakes, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation

Sprinkles Cupcakes To Donate Proceeds On World AIDS Day

Although Giving Tuesday, a day in which people from around the country were asked to donate to the charity of their choice in the spirit of giving back, has passed, that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to give back. And this Saturday, you’ll have your chance.

In honor of World AIDS Day on Saturday, December 1, Sprinkles Cupcakes will donate 100 percent of its proceeds from sales of its famous red velvet cupcakes, specially decorated with red ribbons, to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is an organization with a mission to prevent pediatric HIV infection and to eradicate pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy and prevention and treatment programs. Elizabeth Glaser and her two friends, Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis, founded the foundation after the death of Glaser’s daughter from AIDS. Unbeknownst to Glaser, she passed the virus onto her daughter Ariel through breast-feeding and to her second child, son Jake, who contracted the virus in utero. While trying to treat Ariel for her illness, Glaser realized that doctors had no clear idea on how to treat the child because most drugs on the market for HIV treatment at the time was aimed at only adults, and no HIV drugs had yet been tested and approved for children. When Ariel lost her battle with AIDS in 1988, Glaser feared her son was also in danger. It was then that she decided to set up a foundation to raise awareness and money for pediatric HIV research.

Glaser lost her battle with AIDS in 1994, however, her legacy lives through Jake, Glaser’s two friends and the millions of women and children around the world who have been helped by her foundation.

Since Sprinkles partnered with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in 2010, the company has raised $11,000 toward the cause. This Saturday, show your support for women and children everywhere by simply indulging in your favorite dessert treat.

NiteFlite Gala 2011

NiteFlite Gala, Fundraiser To Benefit Local Children's Charities

The Scottsdale 20-30 Club is hosting its 23rd annual NiteFlite fundraiser on Oct. 12-13 and is expected to draw more than 2,800 attendees.

The semi-formal event takes place in two parts. Friday at 6 p.m. is a nine-hole nighttime golf tournament at Continental Golf Course, which has more than 300 registered players; and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. is a gala at Talking Stick Resort showcasing live music, a silent auction, a raffle and signature food dishes from restaurants throughout the Scottsdale area.

A percentage of the evening’s proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale (BGCGS), with the rest dispersed through an application process next May to local children’s charities, says Chris Karas, chairman of this year’s NiteFlite. Previous recipients have been Arizona Burns Foundation, Team Lifeline and Miracle League of Arizona.

In 2011, the NiteFlite golf tournament and gala raised nearly $340,000 for 16 charities, Karas says. The gala raised $60,602 for BGCGS, and 100 percent of the donations went to more than 100 youth development programs the club offers, says Andrea Omer, communications manager at the BGCGS.

NiteFlite offers attendees the chance to stroll down a red carpet mobbed with paparazzi, indulge in various beverages and cuisines, spend time in a cigar lounge, watch a vaudeville performance and listen to the local band, Elvis Before Noon.

A limited-entry after party keeps the night going with additional events and a performance by DJ Soleman from the Phunk Junkeez.

“It’s a memorable evening people won’t forget,” Karas says.

One of NiteFlite’s main attractions is various food dishes from restaurants around the Valley, including Sprinkles Cupcakes and Orange Sky at Talking Stick Resort.

“We’re happy to help, and think it’s a good thing to be participating with,” says Sprinkles Cupcake Scottsdale General Manager Kristie Shy. Although she doesn’t know what this year’s design will be, “we’ll try to have a fun little decoration,” Shy says. Last year, Sprinkles Cupcakes made $1600 donation.

NiteFlite raises donations throughout the night in multiple ways, one of which is through silent auctions.

“There are a variety of [auctions] from small packages to exotic luxury vacations,” Karas says. Items auctioned off last year included sports memorabilia, spa packages and local and international vacations.

Tickets for NiteFlite cost $150, and VIP packages, which give early access to the after party, are available for sponsorship purchases.

“NiteFlite has become somewhat of a household name throughout Scottsdale and Arizona,” Karas says. “We are very thankful for all the participants that contributed, and because of their experience and the good cause we’re raising for, they tend to come back year after year.”
