Celebrity Fight Night raises $7.2 million

On Saturday, March 23, 2013 stars and athletes from around the country converged on the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona for Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night XIX. The evening opened with the singing of the National Anthem by the Phoenix Boys Choir in which a rare Bald Eagle was released into the room. GRAMMY Award winning leading lady of country music Reba McEntirereturned for her eighth year as emcee, kicking off the night by introducing a special performance by Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers. With Muhammad Ali on stage, international superstar Jennifer Lopez, actor and musician Steve Martin, and philanthropist and owner of the Washington Companies Dennis Washington, were honored with the 2013 Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night Awards. The awards portion of the evening concluded with a special video tribute to Muhammad and Lonnie Ali from legendary musician Paul McCartney.

Following the awards guests were treated to a host of performances under the direction of the multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter and producer David Foster, who returned for his 14th consecutive year as the evening’s Musical Director. Performers included Billy Ray Cyrus who sang “Hillbilly Heart,” “Achy Breaky Heart,” and “Johnny B. Goode,” along with American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart who sang her rendition of “Bennie and The Jets.” Actress and musician Rita Wilson returned to the Celebrity Fight Night stage to perform “Personally,” followed by the winner of The X Factor, Tate Stevens, who sang “I Got This,” and “Power of a Love Song” for the crowd. Andrea Bocelli gave an unforgettable performance including songs “Ave Maria,” “Funiculì, Funiculà,” Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender,” “O sole mio,” “Con Te Partirò,” and a special duet of “Quizás Quizás Quizás” with Jennifer Lopez, marking the first time the duo have ever performed together. Jennifer Lopez closed out the evening with incredible performances of “Get Right,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Club Tropicana,” “Let’s Get Loud” and “On the Floor.”

The black tie event also featured cocktails, a silent auction, an elegant dinner and an exciting live auction featuring one-of-a-kind luxury items. The live auction featured a dinner with Reba McEntire at her Beverly Hills, CA home, with special guests Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and David Foster, which went for a total of $800,000 – two bidders paying $400,000 each. Tom Hanks also threw in two tickets to his upcoming Broadway show “Lucky Guy” plus a backstage meet and greet via phone to seal the bids. Also included in the auction was a week long trip to Tuscany plus a special VIP performance by Andrea Bocelli followed by a private dinner with the musician himself, which sold for $550,000. Celebrity Fight Night XIX raised a total of $7.2 million benefiting the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, as well as numerous other charities. Each year dozens of celebrity guests attend the event that has raised $87 million dollars in 19 years.

Celebrity Fight Night Brings Stars to the Valley for a Night of Giving Back

Celebrity Fight Night brought high-profile names to the Valley on Saturday in support of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) and Movement Disorder Clinic at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort, stars and guests rallied around raising money for life-changing causes with Muhammad Ali as the guest of honor.

Red carpet names for the 2013 event included Reba McEntire, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Rita Wilson, Mario Lopez and Evander Holyfield, among others, with Jennifer Lopez as this year’s featured performer.

Before the night began, stars posed on the red carpet, mingled and signed some of the event’s auction items. Guests were able to bid on a dinner with Reba McEntire at her home in Beverly Hills, VIP concert tickets for Paul McCartney, dinner in Italy with Andrea Bocelli and other once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Celebrity Fight Night has raised over $80 million in its last 18 years. In addition to MAPC, other benefiting organizations for the 2013 event included: Andrea Bocelli Foundation, Barrow Neurological Foundation, David Foster Foundation, First Things First Foundation, Jenesse Center, Muhammad Ali Center, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Theatre, Salvation Army, Solid Rock Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul, Starkey Hearing Foundation, Texoma Health Foundation.

**POST-EVENT UPDATE**

The 2013 Celebrity Fight Night raised a total of $7.2 million, bringing the 19-year total to $87 million. The night’s highlights included performances by Steve Martin, Billy Ray Cyrus, Haley Reinhart, Rita Wilson, Tate Stevens, Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Lopez, with Reba McEntire as emcee. The auctioned dinner with Reba McEntire and special guests Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and David Foster went to two bidders paying a total of $800,000.

Do Something Different for Valentine’s Day

As Valentine’s Day rolls around again, many couples will find themselves in the same old flowers-and-dinner routine.

There are many places around the Valley that offer something a little different this year, whether for first dates or long-married couples. Here are some to think about:

1. Romance in the Garden: On Feb. 16, the Desert Botanical Garden is hosting a candlelit outdoor concert by Chris Burton Jácome Flamenco Ensemble. 3. Citrine Natural Beauty Bar: Fragrances definitely play a big part in everyone’s Valentine’s Day. Melissa at Citrine will take time to blend you a customized fragrance from the purest organic essential oils. Ingredients like Somalian Frankincense and Egyptian Jasmine are aphrodisiacs, or try a blend that matches your astrological sign.

5. The Spouse Whisperer: If you’re looking for laughs, head over to Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino to hear Mark Cordes’ tongue-in-cheek, sharp-witted humor about marriage and middle age. This hysterical look at couples’ life is a great change of pace for Valentine’s Day.

6. Roka Akor: While prix-fixe menus are a staple of many V-Day dinners, this one stands out. Items like wild boar bacon, lobster tartare and mushroom tempura will be served in three seatings: 5, 7 and 9 p.m. Voted one of the top ten sushi restaurants in the U.S., Roka Akor is an excellent date spot as well as a culinary destination. This menu will be served through the 16th if you can’t make it Thursday.

Vampire’s Wedding: If you’re in the Tucson area and looking for a laugh, head to Tucson Dinner Theatre on the 14th. “Murder at The Vampire’s Wedding” is a 3-act interactive show at Arizona’s oldest dinner theatre. A 3-course meal and champagne toast will be served, and the ladies will receive a ‘Keepstake’ rose.

Lopez just wrapped her ‘Dance Again World Tour” performing to packed houses around the world.  The Golden Globe nominee will star opposite Jason Statham in a new film release, Parker, premiering Jan 25.   Music artist, entertainer, actress, film & TV producer, fashion designer, entrepreneur and humanitarian, Jennifer Lopez has been called one of the most powerful and celebrated celebrities in entertainment.   A portion of the proceeds from the charity event will go to the Lopez Family Foundation.  The organization is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and women around the world (www.LopezFamilyFoundation.org).
