RED Awards 2015: Best K-12 Project

On Feb. 26, AZRE hosted the 10th annual RED Awards reception at the Arizona Grand Resort & Spa in Phoenix to recognize the most notable commercial real estate projects of 2014 and the construction teams involved. RED Award trophies were handed out in 10 project categories, to six brokerage teams and safety, subcontractor, architect, general contractor and developer of the year awards were also presented. AZRE also recognized Sunbelt Holdings President and CEO John Graham with a lifetime achievement award. Click here to view all 2015 RED Awards Winners.

Learning is different for every student. That’s why the Peoria Unified School District and the community sought a more flexible learning environment for the $16.5M Sunset Heights Elementary School. These spaces can include retractable walls, glass walls, large windows for natural light and wheeled desks and chairs. The design of these rooms are meant to foster large group, small group and individual learning opportunities. The idea was so popular among the community that when the school opened, 150 more students than the expected 700 were enrolled. The district, which had seen crowding at its three nearby elementary schools, had to hire more teachers to meet the demand. The campus features a media center, two STEM labs, a courtyard, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, grade-specific play areas, solar-power generating shades, a multipurpose building and a cafeteria and gym that can be divided into two functional spaces.

W.J. Maloney Plumbing lands new projects

W.J. Maloney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling has landed two west-side school projects, one for the Glendale Union High School District and one for the Peoria Unified School District.

Noted for its work with school districts, including the Phoenix Union High School District and the Paradise Valley Unified School District, W.J. Maloney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is now working on projects at Greenway High School and the new Sunset Heights Elementary School in Peoria.

At Greenway High School, W.J. Maloney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is providing the plumbing, wastewater and gas systems for both the new science and band buildings as part of Phase 3 of construction.

Sunset Heights Elementary School will open in August with kindergarten through seventh-grade students. It is the district’s 33rd elementary school. W.J. Maloney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling’s work has included Buildings 1 and 2 totaling nearly 200,000 square feet.
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. is the general contractor for both of these school projects.
