Tastes of Cinco de Mayo

Although Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, but rather a small win for the Mexican army in Puebla against the French in the Franco-Mexican War, the holiday is recognized in the United States as a day of awareness and celebration of Mexican culture. Many restaurants provide special menus with Mexican-inspired cocktails and appetizers as well as mariachi music, folk dancing and parties. Hopefully there will be enough limes to support all those margaritas and guacamole!

This weekend, starting with Saturday, May 3, through Monday, May 5, provides a multitude of Cinco de Mayo options such as:

Mexican Food

  • America’s Taco Shop: If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, you have to visit America’s Taco Shop. They will be serving a traditional Mexican dish – Al Pastor – a slow-cooked, thinly sliced pork, marinated in a mild spiced citrus and pasilla adobo and served with minced cabbage, cilantro, tomato sauce, guacamole and thin strips of grilled pineapple.

Margaritas

  • SOL Mexican Cocina: Looking for the perfect margarita? SOL Mexican Cocina’s Corralejo Watermelon Basil Margarita is simply fruity perfection. Combine that with guacamole and Baja cuisine and you are ready for a great Cinco de Mayo.
  • The Herb Box: Drink without the calories? Try the $5 Skinny Superfruit Margarita at The Herb Box. The drink includes Herradura Blanco, Chambord, fresh lime juice and club soda. The Herb Box will also release its new Drinx menu with all day happy hour pricing. Try 10 new cocktails for $8 such as the Vanilla Lemon Drop or Nutty Angel. They will also be serving wine and craft beer.

Parties and New Experiences

  • Sandbar: If you are looking for a full-weekend experience, then Sandbar is your place. The three-day party will include live music and DJs, the Mayweather vs. Maidana fight and, of course, drink specials. Music includes Rockhard and Whiskey’s Quicker on Saturday, The Crown Kings and Pyrosteria on Sunday and Jay Allen and The Uncommon Good and Redneck Rockstars on Monday. You can get your drink on with $3 beers and $5 margaritas all weekend long.
  • Uptown Alley: Try an entirely new Cinco de Mayo experience with the entertainment venue of Uptown Alley. You can eat and drink Mexican-inspired items like $3 tecates, $5 tacos and $5 margaritas while you go bowling, play video games or dominate at laser tag.
  • Sprinkles Cupcakes: If you are really looking to try something new this weekend, you have to try the margarita cupcake from Sprinkles Cantina. This inspired cupcake is composed of a tequila-key lime cake, topped with key lime frosting, a rim of fleur de sel and a festive green and red modern dot. This item is sure to make your Cinco de Mayo party unique.

Local Eateries Master Mint Cocktails

There’s a reason people fight for the last bite of mint chocolate ice cream or the last stick of peppermint chewing gum: mint is a crowd-pleaser. There’s nothing like a burst of fresh mint to energize your palate, cool off your taste buds, and add a little zing to the party. Here are four local favorite refreshingly minty cocktails.

·  Get your mint fix with the Cucumber Mint Cooler at Thirsty Lion Pub & Grill features Smirnoff Citrus Vodka, muddled cucumber and fresh mint, simple syrup and ginger ale and costs $8. They also have a tasty Wild Berry Mojito which is a blend of Bacardi Silver rum, triple sec, wild berry puree, mint, lime, simple syrup, soda, & Sprite and costs $7.50.

·   The Strawberry Shamrock at Kelly’s At SouthBridge features Cruzan Strawberry Ginger, Effen Cucumber, sweet and sour, fresh mint and club soda. It’s super refreshing and perfect for summer! It costs $10 regularly and only $6 during happy hour which is every day from 3-7pm, all day on Sundays.

·  The Pineapple Blossom Margarita at Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill features el Jimador Reposado Tequila, St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Herradura Agave Nectar, lime juice, fresh pineapple and mint. This sweet, delicious drink costs $8.50 regularly and $7.50 during happy hour.

·  Try the Strawberry-Lemon Mojito at Uptown Alley for your daily dose of mint! This Mojito features Bacardi Superior Rum muddled with lemon, sugar, mint leaves and strawberries mixed with soda water and costs $6.99.

Family Entertainment, Restaurant Venue Brings Unique Experience To The Valley

A unique family entertainment experience. Get your game on at Uptown Alley, a 60,000 square foot entertainment and restaurant venue that is perfect for the whole family. The venue features Red Embers Bar & Grill, 40 lanes of bowling, over 75 video and prize games, two-story laser tag attraction, live entertainment and more.

Strike-up the fun for all ages, with high-tech bowling lanes that will complement all skill levels, from beginners to league bowlers. Uptown Alley will open in May at The Boulevard at Surprise Pointe at 13525 N. Litchfield Road.

The main attraction will be 40 high-tech bowling lanes. Catering to beginners, social bowlers or competitive league bowlers, there are opportunities for everyone to have fun.

The chef-created menu at the venue’s full-service casual dining restaurant, Red Embers Bar & Grill, includes house specialty BBQ, gourmet pizzas and pasta, mouth-watering burgers, sandwiches and other Americana favorites. An open exhibition kitchen will create a distinct dining experience, seating 140 guests indoors and 60 on the outdoor patio.

Guests can let loose with two full bars and a large sports theater inside Uptown Alley. Signature libations and over 24 draft beers will be available for our guests. The enveloping sports theater rotunda will have six 55” flat screen HDTVs and a 15’ X 20’ projection screen for “front-row seats” to the big game.

Uptown Alley’s two-story, state-of-the-art laser tag arena will accommodate up to 24 players at a time for the ultimate laser tag experience. Specialty lighting and lively music makes this innovative laser tag course one of the highlights of the venue.

In the gaming area, individuals will discover a plethora of video and prize games, offering opportunities for everyone to find ways to challenge their skills and redeem points for great prizes.

Uptown Alley will also feature a 10-lane boutique ultra lounge called The Approach for guests 21 and over.
