The recession battered all manner of companies, from big to small. But small businesses had one major advantage over their larger peers: flexibility to quickly cope with a rapidly changing economic environment.

Obviously, many small businesses have closed their doors during this economic downturn, but there were also many small businesses that survived and even managed to thrive in the Great Recession.

Recently, five small businesses from across the state were honored with Spirit of Enterprise awards. The awards are given out each year by the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University through its Spirit of Enterprise Center to recognize firms “that demonstrate ethics, energy and excellence in entrepreneurship.”
