From A River To A Stream: Arizona’s Once Strong Population Flow Has Turned Into A Trickle

Arizona Population GrowthWestern states continued to lead the nation in population growth in 2009, but that lead — especially in Arizona — has shortened significantly.

According to the latest posting on the Western Blue Chip Economic Forecast, three Western states had the nation’s fastest growth rate based on figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Wyoming, Utah and Texas led the nation in growth with a 2 percent or more increase.

Fiscal Follies: Arizona’s Budget Woes Put Us On Par With California

Pointing out California’s many flaws is a time-honored sport among Arizona residents, business leaders, economic development leaders and politicians. Luring away residents and businesses from the often-hapless Golden State has been one of the key strategies in Arizona’s growth.

Well, it’s time to stop pointing fingers.

Arizona Unemployment Rate Unchanged

Unemployment in ArizonaUnemployment in Arizona was at a standstill in September, as only the government and educational and health services sectors added jobs.

The latest Arizona Workforce Employment Report from the Arizona Department of Commerce finds the state’s unemployment rate in September was at 9.1 percent, unchanged from August. In September of 2008, the state’s unemployment rate was at 6 percent.

With the government sector generating 19,500 jobs and educational and health services another 700, there was a seasonal increase in non-farm employment last month of 10,600 jobs.

New Magazine to Hit the Stands

New Magazine to hit the StandsAt a time when journalists are being laid off left and right, and magazines are closing their doors either for good or "until things pick up," I came across some news that a brokerage firm is launching its own print and online magazine. Yes, you heard that right -- a print magazine at a time when most of the world is saying that print is dead! That aspect alone was enough to pique my interest in reading the rest of the press release.

Brokers have had some spare time to get back to the basics, get to know their customers and work on sharpening their skills. We've all heard it, and we've all seen their guest articles throughout the various media outlets. So for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Arizona, it made sense to pool together their resources and create a magazine called Arizona View.

Building Arizona

Building ArizonaI've been pretty fortunate in my education and ties within the commercial real estate industry. There are many great organizations out there that AZRE is involved in, and we all work together to help educate our fellow peers. Recently, the Society for Marketing Professional Services - Arizona Chapter created yet another venue to help further this mission -- a blog called Building Arizona.

The blog focuses on the architecture, engineering, construction (A/E/C) and related marketing disciplines. The guest bloggers are passionate about their subjects, and offer in-depth looks into what's happening in the commercial real estate industry.

Arizona’s Unemployment Stays Flat at 9.1% in August

As the nation and state ease out of the recession, the road to recovery remains pitted with potholes. For every seemingly good bit of news, there’s a caveat to stumble over. That’s especially true here in Arizona, which has fallen so hard in this economic downturn.

Fighting Mortgage Fraud: Arizona Joins a Multistate Effort to Combat Scams

Washington, D.C.Arizona has joined a multistate task force designed to fight the growing national problem of mortgage fraud. The task force was announced today by Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna, who co-chairs the State-Federal Task Force on Mortgage Enforcement along with Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.

The task force is described by McKenna's office as an "unprecedented partnership to target fraudsters."

Additional members of the task force include representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice, Department of Treasury, Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Trade Commission, as well as the attorneys general of Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Missouri and Ohio.

"Since Arizona is one of the states hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis, our state is also a prime target for mortgage fraud," said Attorney General Terry Goddard in a statement. "Our office is doing all it can to prevent mortgage scams and prosecute unscrupulous operators. This task force promises to help strengthen these efforts."
