Arizona SunWith all the negative publicity Arizona has received lately, here’s some … well … sunny news.

According to Business Facilities Magazine, a national publication that serves as location advisor for site selection professionals, Arizona is ranked No. 1 among Alternative Energy Industry Leaders. Iowa is ranked No. 2.

Helping Arizona achieve that top spot is Tucson, which ranked No. 1 among the top 10 metro areas in the same category. 

Flying High: Luke AFB Scored The F-35 Pilot Training Center

Luke Air ForceFinally, there’s some non-controversial and positive news on Arizona to report. The United States Air Force announced earlier today that Luke Air Force Base has been chosen as the preferred location for the F-35 2nd Pilot Training Center.

Spearheading the move to get the training center to Luke — thus ensuring the base’s viability in the coming years — was the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

Arizona’s Unemployment Rate Drops

The state’s unemployment rate ticked slightly lower in April, dropping to 9.5 percent from 9.6 percent in March.

The Arizona Department of Commerce reports today that of the state’s 11 major job sectors, nine posted employment gains. Overall, the economy added 19,500 non-farm jobs last month, the largest gain since April 2005.

SB 1070: Los Angeles City Council Boycotts Arizona

Fallout from SB 1070The economic fallout from SB 1070 continues. This afternoon, the Los Angeles City Council passed a measure that bars the city government from conducting any business with Arizona unless the controversial immigration law is repealed.

According to an Associated Press report, Arizona stands to lose up to $8 million in contracts.

On April 23, Gov. Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1070 into law.  The new statute makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. The law also directs local police to question people about their immigration status and demand to see their documents if there is reason to suspect they are illegal. Changes made to the law within days of Brewer signing it include adding the admonition that officers cannot base their reasonable suspicion on race, color or national origin. The law goes into effect on July 29.

According to the latest posting on the Western Blue Chip Economic Forecast, three Western states had the nation’s fastest growth rate based on figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Wyoming, Utah and Texas led the nation in growth with a 2 percent or more increase.

Arizona Unemployment Rate Unchanged

Unemployment in ArizonaUnemployment in Arizona was at a standstill in September, as only the government and educational and health services sectors added jobs.

The latest Arizona Workforce Employment Report from the Arizona Department of Commerce finds the state’s unemployment rate in September was at 9.1 percent, unchanged from August. In September of 2008, the state’s unemployment rate was at 6 percent.

With the government sector generating 19,500 jobs and educational and health services another 700, there was a seasonal increase in non-farm employment last month of 10,600 jobs.
