The U.S. market for anti-aging products – estimated at about $80 billion – is expected to climb to more than $114 billion by 2015. But perhaps mid-lifers who have that “forever young” mindset should save their money. Experts say you can eat your way to a younger, healthier you. In general, you should replace fattening starches with whole grains and cover at least half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Exercise doesn’t hurt too – as we know, it does quite the opposite. • Blueberries – incredibly rich in an antioxidant called anthocyanin which may help protect against free radicals that damage cell wall and DNA that can lead to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; anti-inflammatory properties protecting against heart disease and cancer; very hydrating for the skin and body due to high water content; rich in fiber and manganese

 

• Kale – the most nutrient dense food that’s rich in protein, calcium, magnesium, lutein, iron, beta-carotene, manganese and Vitamins A, C, and K; contains over 45 different flavonoids; antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits protect against heart disease and cancer; rich in Omega 3 fats

 

• Avocado – one of the most nutrient dense foods; rich in monounsaturated fat, oleic acid, lutein, fiber, folate, potassium, Vitamin E, magnesium and one of the most important antioxidants, glutathione; keeps skin healthy, protects against heart disease, cancer, degenerative brain diseases

 

• Chia seeds – “chia” meant “strength” to the Mayans; this nutrient dense seed is rich in Omega 3 fats, protein, fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, niacin, potassium, sulphur and zinc; excellent source of energy; regulates blood sugar, thus, curbing appetite; great for hair, skin and nails

 

• Quinoa – this gluten-free grain is both fiber rich and a complete protein (contains all nine amino acids); it contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, such as B6, magnesium, folate, iron and phosphorus; has anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and small amounts of Omega 3s helping to prevent diabetes and heart disease
