The Valley Partnership Community Project Committee (VPCP) has found a donor for the project's tire play area — Copperstate Tire Company. They have a huge selection and wide variety of tire sizes, and are willing to donate as many tires as needed. The VPCP Committee has accepted their kind offer, and Ryan Trudell of Trudell Design Studio has created a new tire labyrinth design based upon their inventory (see image above). Howard's ACE Hardware, located at 3111 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix, has generously donated the paint for the entire labyrinth project.

TIRE INSTALLATION & DESIGN

Tire installation and designThe tires will be delivered to Tempe Salvation Army (TSA) once the preliminary site grading has been completed, and the site has been staked for the tire locations. At that time, VPCP will have large earth-moving machinery on-site to dig the proper trench depths necessary for each tire. The tire installations shall follow the detailed Tire Labyrinth site plan, which shows each tire location, size of tire, depth of burial (height of top of tire above finished grade), and base coat color that each tire will receive. After all tires have been placed into the prepared trenches, each hole will be back-filled either by hand or machine, depending upon machine accessibility and manpower available. Once all tires have been properly back-filled, the soil will be compacted and the tires will be set in place.

At this time, the tires will be power-washed to remove all dirt and debris. Each tire will then receive a solid coat of primer (to allow better paint adhesion and truer paint color). Next, each tire will receive a solid base color, based upon the designed color palette. After all tires have been painted, the play area will be back-filled with 4" to 6" of sand. The sand backfilling may be a part of Event Day activities, depending on how VPCP's efforts progress as the event draws nearer.

Tire sponsor involvementTIRE SPONSOR INVOLVEMENT

Finally, at this point, any individuals that have made the $100 Tire Sponsorship may personalize one tire of their choice. VPCP is allowing a fair amount of creativity for each sponsor, the organization just asks that the design is "tasteful" — no vulgarity, design is not offensive and adheres to the design's color scheme.

Even though the tire sizes will vary (from 30" to 6' diameter tires), each sponsorship covers one tire.  Rights to paint a specific tire are on first-come, first serve basis. Terrible painting and designs will be subject to public ridicule.
