The Kim & Glen Campbell Foundation promotes the use of music as medicine to alleviate depression, manage behaviors and boost the immune system. Music as medicine also is shown to improve cognition and alter the brain chemistry associated with well-being and stress reduction. The research indicates that music as medicine often augments or reduces the need for pharmacological interventions and improves the lives of people with cognitive impairment and their caregivers.

Through the research of Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, and the guidance and generosity of Arthur Kelm (Universal Music Group/Ground One), David Dolby (Dolby Laboratories), and other partners, the Kim and Glen Campbell Foundation is working to design and build Goodtime Theaters in Memory Care communities across the country, bringing music as medicine to enhance the brain health of people with cognitive impairment and their caregivers.

Glen’s wife of 35 years, Kim Campbell, says, “When Glen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, he didn’t stop making music, in fact, he went on tour.  Music brought him joy, meaning, and purpose. His doctors had no doubt that his persistence in the musical arena helped to preserve intellectual functioning far longer than would have been expected. In the end, music lifted our spirits and gave us ways to connect with Glen when words could no longer reach him.  Music also helped me overcome the crushing depression of losing my husband to Alzheimer’s.”

Daniel J. Levitin, Ph.D. McGill University, commented, “My research has shown that music affects every area of the brain that has so far been mapped. Because of this, and its ancient origins, musical pathways can remain preserved even in the face of brain injury and diseases such as Alzheimer’s. We are on the cusp of figuring out how music can be used as part of an integrated therapy program to help people with Alzheimer’s disease, whether they are musicians or not, and the coming five years promises great new advances.” Dr. Levitin is working on a new book, The Aging Brain, which covers Alzheimer’s and other diseases of the brain.

Posthumously, Capitol/uMe will be releasing a new Glen Campbell album, Sings For The King, on November 16, 2018.  From 1964 to 1968—in between recording sessions with the Wrecking Crew, touring with the Beach Boys and recording his own albums—Glen Campbell was recruited to record songs for the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley. Originally intended for Elvis’s ears only, eighteen of these recently unearthed and unreleased gems will be released together on CD, LP and digitally for the first time, more than half a century later, as the lost album Sings For The King. The collection will also be available on limited edition 180-gram clear vinyl exclusively at GlenCampbell.com.

Glen Campbell loved golf. He played in numerous Pro-Ams throughout his career and chaired his own Glen Campbell Los Angeles Open. He played whenever his schedule would allow, but no less than two rounds per week. In a letter directed to fans regarding his love of golf, he stated that he’s thrilled to be involved in tournaments that “plows whatever profits there are into worthwhile charity.” He ended the piece with, “I’m proud to have my name associated with golf.” Glen no doubt would be honored that his golf legacy continues with the Glen Campbell Memorial Celebrity Golf Outing.
