Ed Robson, founder and chairman of Robson Resort Communities in Arizona and Texas, has donated $8 million to his alma mater, Colorado College. The money will go toward a modern on-campus practice facility for the college’s hockey team.

Robson played hockey while a student at Colorado College in the 1950s. The Edward J. Robson Arena will be built during the 2018-19 school year in downtown Colorado Springs and replace the Honnen rink built in the ‘60s. Honnen is the least energy-efficient building on the campus right now.

“Athletics matter and academics are even more important,” says Robson. “This new arena will give Colorado College hockey players a high-quality ice rink, while keeping them on campus and part of the student body. Doing so will help uphold the college’s commitment to rigorous academics for athletes.”

The 900-seat facility, while meant for the varsity hockey team, will also host intramurals, club teams, student life activities and community hockey leagues.

Robson graduated from Colorado College in 1954 with a degree in business and also received an honorary degree and doctorate of humane letters in 2014 from the institution. Robson has served on the Colorado College Board of Trustees, established endowed scholarships for CC students, and been one of the strongest advocates for the college and its mission.

“Ed Robson’s accomplishments as an entrepreneur and leader in his community embody the best of what Colorado College alumni do in the world,” says Colorado College President Jill Tiefenthaler. “Thanks to Ed, Colorado College Tiger hockey players can be more fully engaged members of and contributors to our academic community, even as they pursue success as competitive athletes. In addition, the Edward J. Robson Arena will serve the entire campus and wider community. I am so grateful for Ed’s leadership in the effort to build a world-class facility for on-campus practice.”
