Today, locally-owned and operated Mexican restaurant, Cocina Madrigal, announced the opening of its South Phoenix location on the corner of 16th St. and Wood Street, at 4044 S. 16th St. in Phoenix.

Cocina Madrigal’s Chef and owner, Leo Madrigal, was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and began his culinary career in Mexico City as a teenager. He then left for Houston before settling in Phoenix to raise his family. Madrigal has built culinary concepts, menus and kitchens for restaurants such as Z’tejas, Salty Sow, Hopdoddy, Eddy V’s and Taco Guild before ultimately deciding to pursue his own dreams of building a restaurant and sharing his vision of Mexican cuisine.

“From the moment our guests walk into the restaurant, I want them to feel welcomed, appreciated and at home. I’m so excited to share my commitment to service and high quality food at our new location in South Phoenix,” says Madrigal.

The 1,900-square-foot location holds 100 people and features flat screen TVs throughout the intimate restaurant. A bar in the back of the restaurant serves up a unique selection of tequilas and signature margaritas. A patio area is slated to open in late summer, to add an additional 40 seats.

Cocina Madrigal’s menu is inspired by Madrigal’s roots in Mexico City and Oaxaca, with an American twist. The restaurant offers something for everyone with a commitment to the highest quality of food, beverages and service. The menu includes homemade tacos, enchiladas, burros, soups, salads and it even offers some non-Mexican dishes like burgers, pasta and salads.

Favorite dishes include options like the Oaxaca con Queso appetizer, with Oaxaca and American cheese, longaniza and New Mexico hatch chilies with fresh homemade chips and salsa; the Tres Mushroom Enchilada with a mix of three wild mushrooms and jack cheese rolled in a corn tortilla topped with ancho mole cream, avocado relish and sour cream; the Mango Steak Salad with baby mixed greens, bleu cheese crumbles, spicy pecan, roma tomatoes and mango citrus dressing; and Grilled Elote with cotija cheese.

Cocina Madrigal is open for lunch and dinner Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The spot also boasts a weekday happy hour from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday, with two dollars off appetizers like Oaxaca con Queso, Guacamole de Casa, Steak Quesadilla and more. Guests can also join in for drink specials like margaritas for $5.95, can beers for $3.50, Bud Light draught bottle beers for $4 and wine by the glass for $5.
