Now in its 14th consecutive year, the Heard Museum El Mercado de las Artes returns this Nov. 14 and 15 to offer an exclusive immersion into the world of Latino culture and art at the museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.

With more than 65 Hispanic artists from Arizona, New Mexico, Mexico and South America, El Mercado is set to feature a multitude of works for show and sale, ranging from colorful colcha embroidery to beautiful retablos painted in natural pigments. Art will be available in every price range, with artists and creators readily available to offer insights to those looking to start or grow their Latino art collections.

The experience will be complemented with strolling mariachis and a menu of Hispanic cuisines prepared by the Courtyard Café. The menu will focus on Mexican favorites, featuring fresh-made tacos, tortas, posole and more. Visitors will have the option of sitting down to a calm meal at the Café or ordering grab-and-go items in the courtyard while they browse.

This year’s market’s featured artists are Phoenix artists Gennaro Garcia and Luciano Garcia, and honors the spirit of Frida Kahlo, the legendary 20th century Mexican painter. While visiting the Mercado, be sure to see the Heard’s exhibits Frida Kahlo–Her Photos and Las Favoritas de Frida: Selections From the Heard Collection. A complete list of artists will be available soon at heard.org.

Joining the Garcias this year will be several authors appearing from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, only. Charlotte Bell, author of Rich Roots, a book of photographs about the hooked rugs of Las Rancheritas women’s craft cooperative in Mexico, will be in the Heard Museum Shop. Three other authors will be signing books in the Heard’s bookstore, Books & More:

  • Albert Quihuis, author of bilingual children’s books
  • Susan Topp Weber, author of the new book, Nativities of the Southwest
  • Stevie Mack, author of Day of the Dead Folk Art

El Mercado de las Artes takes place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday & Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15. Market attendance is free with a suggested donation of $10 for admission to the museum.
