For decades, we have been designing ‘Man Caves’ where men relish the privacy of their men-centric rooms to engage in hobbies, socialize, play games and watch sports. Local multidisciplinary designer, Yvette Craddock, coins the term “She Space” to describe spaces for woman to engage in craft activities, calming fitness or cocktails with girlfriends.

The idea for “She Spaces” came from working with client Chrissa Michelle on redesigning her art studio in the Historic Willow District. Chrissa’s studio is her personal sanctuary for her creative endeavors. The 500 sq ft independent space is craved by every visitor. Chrissa says, “Every woman replies with, I want a space like that. “ That comment fueled Yvette’s She Space idea. “Chrissa and I were discussing what the woman version of a Man Cave was and neither of us had ever heard of a term other than Woman Cave and most recently She Shed. However, we both agreed that the terms don’t quite hit the mark.  “I have yet to meet a woman who desires to live in a cave or a shed. However, every woman I have ever met wants to live in a beautiful space. She Space seems to more accurately reflect women’s lifestyle and design desires,” says Yvette Craddock.

The approach taken with Chrissa outlines the entire design process including her vulnerability, our collaborative connectedness and the transformation of completing that space as it impacts her daily life and future goals. According to the New York Times, single women account for 16% of home buyers and the percentage continues to rise. For Americans with children, 40% of the household breadwinners are women. As women continue to own more property and fulfill multiple, demand roles in their lives, the desire to have their own space will continue to increase. Another trend is the desire to inhabit smaller spaces, micro dwellings, and to have modular type of spaces on a property to fulfill specific functions.
