Today Steward Medical Group introduced a new name – Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center –  for the prestigious orthopedic clinic, which is the official partner of the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury.

Formerly known as Hedley Orthopaedic Institute, the renowned clinic has also welcomed prominent sports medicine physicians, Thomas Carter, MD, and C. Dain Allred, MD, who will provide world-class care to patients.

“Though our name is changing, our reputation for offering top notch orthopedic care for star professional athletes and weekend warriors alike remains the same,” said Sanjay Shetty, president of Steward Medical Group. “This is an exciting change for our expert orthopedic and sports medicine providers. We are excited to present a new identity to our patients and the community, while at the same time reinforcing the commitment to our legacy of clinical expertise and an excellent patient experience.”

The name Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center aligns the orthopedic team with Steward Health Care and its hospitals in Mesa, Phoenix, and Tempe, as well as better reflects the expanded expertise of the group by adding the Sports Medicine specialty to the brand. The Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center has three offices in Phoenix, one in Mesa, and one in Tempe, for patient convenience. Fourteen physicians and six advanced practitioners will provide comprehensive orthopedic care. In the past year, the Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center provided care to more than 10,000 patients. More information about the clinic is available at stewardorthoaz.com.

The addition of both Dr. Carter and Dr. Allred enhances patient access and provides additional expert resources to care for them.

Dr. Carter, Head Team Physician for the Phoenix Suns, provides expert care for all sports injuries, and concentrates his surgical care in knee and shoulder repair. He also currently serves as Orthopedic Team Physician for Grand Canyon University. Dr. Carter is considered a world authority in the treatment of meniscus replacement in the knees, as well as articular cartilage, and holds several patents for treating these medical issues.

“I’m thrilled to join Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center and look forward to taking care of our community’s residents and neighbors,” said Dr. Carter. “As an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, it’s my goal to enable patients to live their highest quality of life and provide excellent care to help keep them well.”

Dr. Allred is an orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon with extensive experience in arthroscopy and surgery of the shoulder, knee, and ankle. Dr. Allred has held many different international and national teaching roles as faculty, lecturer, moderator and instructor to orthopedic peers. He currently serves as a Team Physician for the Phoenix Suns and Mesa City School District.

“The opportunity to care for patients at the Steward Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center is such a privilege,” said Dr. Allred. “We have the most state-of-the-art diagnostics and resources available for our patients and I look forward to caring for them and getting them back at the top of their game.”
