Have you been thinking about expanding your business recently? If so, then there must have been some sort of reason for this. It’s highly unlikely that this was just a wild, random thought that you didn’t really think through, or have any kind of basis for. But, that doesn’t mean that expanding is for everyone, or that you’re in the right position to do so, or that it’s even possible.
There are many factors that you’re going to have to consider before you make a decision as to whether or not this is the right time for an expansion. We’re sure that you’re aware of some of them, but we’re going to go through them anyway just to make sure. Down below, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the elements that you need to think about if you think that you’re ready to expand, delving into what could happen if you get this wrong, and more.
Can You Afford It?
The first thing that we’re going to need to consider is whether or not you can afford to expand your business. It costs a lot of money to be able to do this as there are so many things that need to come together, things that need to be done, and things that need to be paid for. It all adds up extremely quickly, and there is no way to guarantee that there aren’t going to be even more hidden expenses that you forgot to consider.
It’s important that your business is already turning a profit if you’re even considering expanding, as what’s the point otherwise? It’s important that your business is making enough money, and that you have enough money set aside to pay for any added expenses that come with the expansion. You need to look at the projected figures, and work out if adding to your business is going to help in terms of long term success.

The Team Needs To Expand
When expanding your business, it’s not just about expanding the business itself, you also have to expand your team. Expansions are tough because there are a lot of people who try to get away with not adding more people to their team, and trying to manage a larger business with the same number of staff. The thing is, this is never going to work. With more clients, you’re going to need more people to handle the workload, and you must get the right employees, or the whole expansion could be in danger.
As such, you need to be looking at how you can expand your team. Are you going to go through the interview process yourself? Or, are you going to outsource this task? It’s up to you which option you choose, as long as you are happy with what you decide. An option that you can consider is looking into an RPO model to recruit your USA team quickly if you’re happy to outsource to experts who know what they are doing, and you’re looking for a team in the US. Getting professional help takes a lot of the stress off of you, and helps you find the best of the best.
Does The Demand Exist?
You need to ask yourself whether this is the right time to expand by debating whether there is enough demand, or whether you can generate enough demand to make it worth it. Some people have had an increase in demand but not enough to justify expanding the entire business just yet. However, if you believe that you are going to be able to generate enough with clever marketing, and based on the current demand levels that you’re seeing for your business, then it might still be possible to successfully expand.
Generating demand is a tricky game though, and one that you’re not going to be able to guarantee success for. Sometimes, even with all of the clever marketing in the world, you’re still not going to be able to get to the levels that you need to make an expansion possible.
Are You Capable Of Managing This Expansion?
We don’t mean this to offend anyone, but it’s a genuine question that you’re going to need to consider. It’s a lot to manage a business as it is, but then to add in the stress of an expansion, and then continue to run the business going forward is more than some people can handle. Due to this, it’s essential that you are taking your time in making this decision.
There’s a lot of extra added pressure, there’s a lot of extra tasks that you’re going to need to take on, and that can take its toll on anyone. You need strong support from your employees if you’re going to be successful here, but you also need to be a strong business leader, else the expansion could cause your business to crumble.
Consider Customer Service Needs
As we’re sure you already know, customer service is a massively important part of business, and as you expand your customers may struggle a little. Companies tend to find that they have a lot more customer service demands as they expand, and as such you need to work out how you’re going to meet these needs should they arise.
You already have your customer service measures in place, but you’re going to need to ramp them up and add more if needed. Think this through, speak to your customer service team to see what can be done, and consider even talking to your customers and asking if there’s anything more that you can do. After all, where else is better to get the information that you need?
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be thinking about if you’re trying to determine whether or not your business is ready to expand. It’s a tough one, but only you know for sure in the end.
