Today’s spotlight: Angie Schmidt

CEO

SDB Contracting

Schmidt has had construction in her blood for many years. Her father, Dominic Spagnuolo, founded SDB in 1980. Schmidt joined SDB in 2012 and has worked with many departments of the company. She started in accounting as her father believes running a successful business requires following the finances. Schmidt became CEO in 2017. Her philosophy regarding SDB is about the people. SDB is a “family” business with employees creating success working together. Schmidt’s vision of SDB focuses on repeat clients and new partnerships. Some of SDB’s clients have been partners for more than 30 years.

Lesson learned in 2020:During the pandemic SDB came together as a family and our mantra was to stay calm, cool and collected.  This helped our team focus on the business and one another. We also learned the importance of being able to react quickly to make immediate changes as needed. We had to focus on the facts, not rumors.  Communication was key to keeping everyone in the loop as so many team members were working from home. What also helped was having the best IT team to keep SDB up and running while working from home. What I can take away from all of this is that SDB runs as a cohesive team, always!.”

Source of pride:SDB has been successful in many sectors throughout the construction industry. A few things have given me extreme pride. One of them is expanding our healthcare sector. SDB has performed work and continues to do so in 7 major hospitals in the Valley. I am also extremely proud of our Business Development and Marketing teams. Although some of these team members are new, everyone brings their own special talent to make one dynamic team. We have an amazing operations, accounting team and the best carpenters who were on the frontlines every day during the pandemic. Our employees are my greatest accomplishment.”

Surprising fact:I started my career as a florist and studied in California.  Then managed a flower shop in Phoenix for 10 years. I still love designing floral arrangements and have helped a few employees with their weddings and special events over the years. Running is also one of my passions. I started running when I was in junior high and still do it almost every day. I have run 1 marathon and 2 halves so far! My biggest joy was raising my two sons and I am now very lucky to be a mother-in-law. My down time is mostly spent with family including my husband Craig, my parents and my children.”
