1. Phoenix Zoo/Arizona Center for Nature Conservation

Background: The Arizona Center for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo is one of the largest nonprofit zoos in the country. The Zoo features more than 3,000 animals, with nearly 400 species represented, including many threatened and endangered species. Some of the Zoo’s famous inhabitants include Mexican grey wolves, Bornean orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and many, many more. Nestled in the heart of Papago Park, the Zoo is enjoyed by more than 1.4 million guests each year.

Strengths: “Resilience and innovation. Pivoting several aspects of the Zoo’s operations over the past couple of years of the pandemic, and starting to come out on the other side, the Zoo is back at nearly 90% of our pre-pandemic attendance levels. We have wide open pathways, more than 125 acres to roam outdoors and were able to quickly and creatively offer safe alternative ways to enjoy the Zoo, namely Cruise the Zoo and Cruise ZooLights.”
