Phoenix Children’s has received a $1 million commitment from Sundt Construction to support its Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD), helping advance innovative treatment, groundbreaking research and comprehensive care for children and families facing cancer and blood disorders.
The five-year pledge builds on a strong partnership between Sundt and Phoenix Children’s and, with this new commitment, will bring Sundt’s total support to more than $1.4 million since the partnership began in 2021. Sundt also serves as the title sponsor of Big Dig for Kids, the construction industry’s signature fundraising event benefiting Phoenix Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, which returns Saturday, Nov. 7.

“Sundt Construction has been an incredible partner to Phoenix Children’s, and this generous commitment will help us continue advancing care for children and families facing cancer and blood disorders,” said Tim Harrison, vice president, corporate partnerships, special events & grant philanthropy at Phoenix Children’s. “Their continued support allows our teams to pursue innovative treatments and research while providing the world-class care every child deserves.”
Phoenix Children’s recognized the commitment during a celebration on Sept. 2 at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Thomas Campus. The event brought together leaders from Phoenix Children’s and Sundt Construction and featured remarks about the partnership’s impact, a patient story, a commemorative video, a toast and a ceremonial check presentation.
During the celebration, Phoenix Children’s patient Lilly shared her experience receiving care at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in October 2024. Following chemotherapy and surgery, Lilly has returned to school and competitive dance. Her story highlighted the impact that comprehensive pediatric cancer care and philanthropic support can have on quality of life.
“Lilly’s story is a reminder of what’s at stake every day at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. It’s why Sundt is deepening its commitment to Phoenix Children’s by providing another $1 million over five years to help the Center continue its work in treatment and research. Dave Crawford built something lasting when he started Big Dig for Kids, and our employee-owners are proud to keep it growing,” said Cade Rowley, president and CEO of Sundt Construction.
Founded by Dave Crawford, retired CEO of Sundt Construction, in 2016, Big Dig for Kids was originally created to support the American Cancer Society. Since the partnership with Phoenix Children’s began in 2021, the event has raised more than $5 million in support of pediatric cancer care, treatment and research. The annual event gives children the opportunity to operate heavy machinery, explore construction equipment and experience the industry firsthand while raising critical funds for pediatric cancer care.
The celebration also honored Crawford’s vision and legacy, recognizing his role in launching Big Dig for Kids and helping grow the partnership between Sundt and Phoenix Children’s. Dr. Mario Otto of Phoenix Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders spoke about how philanthropic investments like Sundt’s support patients, programs and continued advancements in pediatric cancer care.
With its new five-year commitment, Sundt will help Phoenix Children’s continue providing comprehensive care and support while advancing innovative treatment and research for children and families served by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
