Methodology

BetUS ranked the 100 most populous U.S. cities across four luck pillars, such as the number of casinos within 25 miles of the city center, Mega Millions and Powerball winners, FEMA disaster exposure, and lightning-strike survival rate. Each metric was min-max scaled to 0-100, multiplied by its assigned weight, and summed into a Luck Score used to rank cities from luckiest to least lucky.

Disaster exposure is calculated so that fewer disasters score higher, and is calculated per 100,000 people from state-level FEMA counts. Lightning survival rate (higher = luckier) uses county-level all-time injury and death totals (1996-2025) from the NOAA/NCEI Storm Events Database, applied to each city in the county. Cities whose county recorded no lightning injuries or deaths are assigned a 100% survival rate, indicating no casualties occurred rather than a measured outcome.
