“We really do put people first,” says Cathy Graham, executive vice president at Desert Financial Credit Union, one of the Best Places to Work in Arizona. “The employment environment is really tough right now with the Great Resignation. So we try to be really purposeful and clear about the organization: where we’re going, what we’re striving for, what success looks like and then connecting the dots. People want to feel like part of something bigger than just the role that they fill every day.”

Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center
Founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Joseph’s was the first hospital in the Phoenix area. Today, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a nationally recognized center for quality tertiary care, medical education and research. It includes the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute, the Norton Thoracic Institute, Center for Women’s Health and a Level I Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons.
WORKPLACE CULTURE: “Some of the strengths I see not just at St Joseph’s, but throughout Dignity Health, is the culture of ‘Hello Humankindness,’” says Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, CEO of Dignity Health Arizona Central and West Valley Market, and CommonSpirit Health. “Many people that come to work for us say, ‘I actually see that we live, eat and breathe this culture.’ I’m super proud of the team. I’m proud of the culture that not only our executive team, but our physicians and our clinical staff continue to celebrate throughout the days.”
NOT JUST A CATCHPHRASE: “I think our workforce epitomizes ‘Hello Humankindness,’” says Finley-Hazle. “We talk a lot about connecting with the human spirit. Our ability to touch each other, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually makes all the difference when it comes to healing, when it comes to healthcare, but also when it comes to being an employee in that type of environment. Just as an example: Every meeting we start with a reflection. That alone changes the tone of the meeting. It changes the tone of the organization. When I have an opportunity to talk to new employees on Mondays at new employee orientation, I tell them you can work a lot of places throughout the state of Arizona, but you chose to work here. Many times they tell me it’s because it’s a mission-driven organization where they can see us living our mission every day.”
